IMPROVEMENT IN coRsET-cLAsPs.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 143,403, dated October 7, 1873; application iiled July 26, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN BURKE, of Boston,in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Gorset-Fastenings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figurelis a plan representing two springs of a corset held together by my improved fastening. Figs.2 and 3 are plans ofthe two springs detached from each other. Fig. llis a transverse section'on the line a: x of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail.

The clasps of corsetfastenings of the ordinary construction are liable to `break and become loose; besides which, where the clasps and the heads of the pins which engage therewith project out from the springs, the clothes of the wearer are apt to be torn thereby. To remedy the above-mentioned objections is the purpose of my invention; which consists in a projection, one end of which is riveted, or otherwise seeured,between one of the springs and its covering-plate, the other end of the projection .being provided with an enlargement or head, which passes through a slot in the opposite covering-plate, and ts into a notched block secured between it and the spring which it covers; the entire projection occupying a position inside the plane of the outer surface of the covering-plates, whereby all possibility ofthe clothes ofthe wearer being caught thereby and torn is avoided 5 the fastening thus produced being strong and durable, and not liable to be accidentally unhooked.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to' describe the manner in which I have carried it out.

Inthe said drawings, AB are the two springs of a corset, bent in the ordinary form, over v which extend their covering-plates O D, the

ends of which are riveted thereto at a. b are projections of the form seen, situated between the spring A and its covering-plate C, at equal distances from each other, and secured in place by rivets 8 passing through their inner enlarged ends 9, the outer end of each of these projections being provided with a head or enlargement, 10, which passes into a slot, 12, of corresponding form, made in the coveringplate D, and fits into a notched block, c, of the form shown in Fig. 5, secured between it and its spring B by rivets 13; by which construction the head l0 and the portion of the projection contiguous thereto are made to rest within the notched plate, inside the outer surface of the covering'plate, in which position the clothes of the wearer will not come in contact therewith and be torn; besides which, the head of the projection has a firm and square bearing on the shoulders 14 of its notched plate, and cannot be unintentionally unhooked.

The above-described fastening is strong, durable, and of simple construction 5 and by its employment the springs can be hooked and unhooked with great facility.

It is evident that the heads of the proj ections b may be round, or of other form than asquare, without departing from the spirit of my invention it being simply necessary to make the slots in the covering-plate B, and the openingsinthe notched plates of a form corresponding thereto.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The projections .1), secured between the spring A and its covering-plate G, in combination with the notched block c, secured between the spring B and its covering-plateD, provided with slots l2 to receive the said projections b, substantially as and for the purpose described.
