UNITED STATES 1,433,930 PATENT oFFicE.
NEWTON J. BISHOP, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT or COLUMBIA.
.'.i;.if1 WINDOW-SASH HOLDER.
Application filed March 7, 1922.
To all whom it may comer n:
Be it known that I, NEWTON J. BTsHor, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Window- Sash Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to window sash holders, and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a sash engaging arm for engaging the upper sash, a downwardly and inwardly inclined lower sash engaging arm for limiting the upward movement of the lower sash, and an expansible loo adapted to be received in the groove of tiie window frame adjacent the parting strip and forming means for sup porting the device adjacent the side rail of the upper sash. The expansible loop also forms means whereby the device may be supported in various widths of grooves.
A further object is to form the device from a single piece of wire, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture to a minimum and allowing the device to be formed from standard material of different auges.
'With the above and other ob ects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the window frame showing the sash therein, and the window fastener applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the fastener.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the fastener.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the outer side of the fastener, showing the parts slightly open for better illustrating the various convolutions.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the side of a conventional form of window frame and 2 a vertically disposed groove in said side in which the lower sash 3 moves. One side of the groove 2 is Serial No. 541,738.
formed by the parting strip 4 on the outside of which parting strip the upper sash 5 is vertically slidable in the usual manner. It is the custom to lower the upper sash or raise the lower sash, or both for ventilating purposes, however when this done the entrance of burglars and the like through the window is not prevented, and to overcome this-difiiculty the sash holder 6 is provided, which looks or prevents the sash from being moved beyond a predetermined distance, therefore allowing the sash to be adjusted sufficiently to allow passage of air for ventilating purposes, and at the same time not sufficient to allow entrance of a burglar.
The window fastener 6 is formed from a single piece of wire, preferably heavy gauge spring wire and comprises an expansible loop 7 adapted to be receivedin the sash groove 2 and to expand and engage the side walls of the groove in such a manner as to support the fastener 6 adjacent the upper sash 2. By providing the expansible loop 7, the device may be supported in sash grooves 2 of different widths, thereby allowing the fastener to be applied to different types of window frames and to different sizes of window frames. The wire after the loop 7 is formed bends outwardly at 8 thereby providing an outwardly exthe convolutions 11 have been formed the wire extends downwardly thereby forming an arm 12, and thence is bent upwardly thereby forming an arm 13, and .at the same time forming an inclined U-shaped lower sash engaging member 14. After the arm 13 has been formed the wire is bent to provide a plurality of convolutions 15 of equal size which convolutions add a spring action to the device, and at the same time engage and bind against the upper sash 5 when the lower sash 3 is forced upwardly onto the member 14:, and assist in preventing the fastener from slipping. The wire, after being bent to form the convolutions 15, extends upwardly through the eye 10 as shown at 16 and terminates in an inwardly extending and upwardly extending arm 17, the right angled portion 18 of which engages the sash 5 and if so desired said arm may be provided with a prong 19 adapted to be imbedded in the sash 5 for additionally preventing slipping of the fastener When either sash is moved towards the adjacent sash. The eye 10 braces the arms 17 and stiffens the same so that the right angled arm 18 frictionally engages the sash 5. j
From the above it Will be seen that the fastener is supported from the groove 2 and that the fastener may be so positioned that the upper and lower sash maybe positively limited in movement in an open direction for a predetermined distance, thereby allowing the sash to be adjusted for ventilating purposes, and at the same time preventing entrance of unauthorized persons. It so desired the prong 19 may be eliminated and the two sashes held by thefrictional engagement of the right angled arm 8 and the sash engaged arm 14.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful-is:
1. The combination with awindoiv "fastener having sash engaging members and located adjacent a sash groove, oi? means carried by said fastener and disposed Within the groove for supporting said fastener, said means comprising a contractible and .expansible member engaging the Walls of the groove.
2. The combination With a indow tastener having sash. engaging members and located adjacent sash groove, of means carried by said fastener and disposed Within the groove for supporting said fastener, said means comprising an expansible looped member formed from springmaterial.
3. The combination with a Window fastener having sash engaging members and spring material and eng tendingsash engaging member and an vpansible loop support adapted to located adjacentthe sash groove. of means carried by said fastener whereby the his tener may be supported adjacent different idths of grooves, said means comprising an expansiblc looped. member formed from. ing opposite Walls of the groove.
4:. A window fastener comprising an expansible loop adapted to engage in a sash groove and support the fastener, .an outwardly entendingarm carried bysaiddoop, said arm terminating in an eye, said eye terminating ina convolution, a1 U-shaped sash engaging member carried by said convolution, the endo'i the U-shaped member terminating in aplurality of vertically disposed convolutions, the outer vertically disposed convolution terminating in anup- Wardly rztending sash engagingarmpassing through the eye in the outwardly eX tending arnnsaid upwardly extending sash engaging arm being provided witha right angled arm and a prong carriedbythe right angled arm. a
5. A window fastener formed 'fiOIJ'i a si gle piece of Wire, saidfastoner comprisinga body portion'formed itroma plurality of convolutions, a downwardly extending sash engaging member, an upwardly exexeived in, the sash groove.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to ,thisspecification in the nresence of a subscribing witness.
