BABBITTING MACHINE.
Application filed Octoberl'i', 1921. Serial No. 508,329.
To aZZw/wmz'tmw-y concern: I
Be it known that I, Monnrs l3. Mosrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wells, in the county of Faribault and State of lliinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Babbitting Machines; and I do hereby declare the tollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description 01" the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a highly etlicient and accurate babbitting machine intended for general use, but especially adapted for use in forming babbitt bearings in the connecting rods of multiple cylinder combustion engines.
To the above end, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the drawings. i
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention like character sindicate like parts throughout the several views. 1
Referring to the drawings:
F 1 is a side elevation of the improved machine, on which is mounted a connecting rod for receiving a babbitt bearlng, some parts of the machine being broken away and other parts beingindicated in different positions by means of broken lines;.
Fig. 2 is a view partly in end elevation and partly in transverse vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale. with some parts shown in different positions by means or" broken lines;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view;
Fig. i a. view principally in longitudinal,
vertical section taken on the line it-4: oi: Fig. 1-3, with the top and bottom core plates inverted in respect to their. position sh vn in Fig. 2; l
Fig. 5 is a View partly in end elevation and partly in transverse" vertical section showing a modified form of mold and also showing a clamping attachment for the mold; and i l Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 5.
The babbitting machine illustrated includes a skeleton frame having substantially A-shaped end members 7 connected by. upper side bars 8 and? a bottom shelf .9. A
long narrow table 10 ismounted on the frame end members 7 for angular lateral tilting adjustment by providing said table, at its ends, with depending lugs 11, which are pivotally connected to bearing brackets 12 on said frame end members by a long clamping rod 13 which extends through aligned bores in said lugs and bearing brackets, and provided'with a niit actii1g hand wheel 1%. To positively hold'the lugs 11 in different adjustments on the bearing brackets 12, said lugs and bearing bracl ets are provided withserrated surfaces 15 011 their opposing faces. a a y A horizontal turntable 16, having hinged top and intermediate sections 17 and 18, respectively, is secured to the top of the table 10 at its inner end by a nut-equipped pivot bolt 19. The top section 17 is hinged at 20 to the turntable 16 and loosely rests on the head of the pivot bolt 19, andthe interme diate section 18 is hinged at 21 to said top section 17 at a point diametrically opposite.
and. rigidly secured to a pair of laterally spaced transversely extended blocks 24, which, in turn,- are rigidly secured to the top section 17. The other or outer end of the track rail 23 is supported in the fork 01" a. bifurcated bracket 25 attached to the outer end of the table 10. A hookracting spring 26, attached to the bracket, (see Fig. 1), is arranged to releasably engage the track rail 23 and yieldingly hold the same on the bracket 25. I
At the inner end of the track rail 23 is a horizontal face plate 27 having a depending hub 28mounted in a collar 29 rigidly secured to the upper ends of a pair of upright arms 30 having, on their lower ends, sleeves 31 secured to the ends of a horizontal cross-bar by screw-threaded engagement. This cross-bar 32 is intermediately secured to the inner end of the track rail 23 by a nutequipped stuc 3 :3. Thumb screws 34: prevent the sleeves 31 from turning on the cross-bar and which cross-bar is provided with reduced end extensions 35, for a purpose that will presently appear. A'set screw 36, having screw-threaded engagement with the collar 29 and hub 28, prevents the face plate 27 from turning on said collar. On the upper surface of the face plate 27 are conccmtric work-positioning; rings 3'7.
In Figs. 1 to l, inclusive, the machine is shown adjusted and provided with the necessary mold for forming a babbitt bearing in the crank-receiving end or of a connecting rod y, and which end, as shown, comprises half sections connected by nut-equipped bolts The other or wrist-pin-receiving end of the connecting rod 1 is indicated by the letter a. i
In this adjustment of the machinepthe mold includes a core sleeve, around which the connecting rod end is positioned. The core sleeve 88 is secured to the intermediate portion of a spindle 3 The mold further provides upper and lower annular core plates 40 and 421, respectively having axial openings through which the ends of the" spindle 39 project. These core plates -10 and d1, are adapted to rest upon the ends of the core sleeve 38 and close the ends of the connecting rod end w, as shown in Fig. l.
' The lower end of the spindle 39 is removably mounted in a bushing 42 mounted in the hub 28 of the face plate 27 and held by the set screw 36 with the bottom core plate ll supported on saidbushing and the face 4 plateQY. l-lemovably mounted on the upper face plate 4:0 is a hopper flange or skimming cup as into which molten babbitt is poured, and from where it flows through apertures Min the top core plate 10 into the space between thecore'sleeve 38, connecting rod-receiving end and top and bottom core plates a0 and ell. One of the faces of each core plate etO and 1 1 is smooth and the other face thereof has formed therein an annular groove 45. \Vhen the faces of the core plates 40 and 41., havingthe annular grooves lfi, are turned toward each otheri as shown in Fig. 2, the babbitt bearing will be formed with beads which overlap the ends of the connecting rod end By inverting the core plates 4:0 and all to turn their smooth taces toward each other, as shown in Fig. l, the babbitt bearing will be formed flush with the ends of the connecting rod end a The connecting rod end is held by an upright spindle ell-6, which extends therethrough, as best shown in Fig. l, and is of the same diameter as the wrist pm to which the connecting rod is to be applied. The
lower end of the spindle 46 is removably mounted in a socket 417 having a base 48 pro vi (led with a pair of transversely aligned trunnions 49 journ'aled in upstanding bearings 50 on the sides of a traveller 51; This traveller 51 is in the form of a'sleeve square in cross-section and slidably mounted on the track rail 23 for movement toward and from the spindle 394 By making the track rail 23 and traveller square in cross-section, said traveller is held on the track rail 23 against turning movement.
To secure the spindle d6 in different angular positions in respect to the traveller 51 and parallel to the spindle 39, there is pro is provided for holding the traveller indifferent positions on said track rail;
To set the axis of the spindle 46 at predetermined different distances from the axis of thespindle 39 for holding the connecting, rod y to receive a babbitt bearing in the end 00, the" axis of whieh is the correct distance from the axis of its end .2, there is provided a squarerotary scale bar 5% having in its edges notches 55 with any one of which a pointer 56 on the traveller 51 is arranged to enter by a springing movement. This scale bar 5-il extends parallel to the track'rail 23 and has, at its ends, trunnions 57 mounted in bearings 58 011 one side of said table. In actual practice, the scale bar 54; will have indicated thereon, at each notch 55, an identi- 'iication mark for assisting the operator in setting the spindle 4:6, for holding connecting rods to receive a babbitt bearing the axis of which is the correct distance from the axis ofits other end. These identification marks may be thenames of the engine, or the automobile for which the connecting;- rods areintended; or they'may indicate different lengths of connecting rods. A shallow annular pan 59 is removably supported on the peripheral edge portion of the face plate 27 to catch any babbitt metal which may be spilled at the time ofeasting.
To heat the parts to which a babbit-t beau ing is to be applied and the mold, an ordinary blow torch 60 is used, as indicated in Fig. 1. This blow torch 60 is supported from the frame of the machine iliOlflGItlCill and horizontal adjustment by rigidly securingthereto a depending stem 61 turnably and endwise movably mounted in a bearing 62 on the outer end of a two-part arm 63, the members of which are telescopically connected and held in diiferent longitudinal adjustments by a set screw 64. A set-screw 65 also holds the stem '61 in vdifferent"adjustments in the bearing 62. On the innerend of the arm 63 is a bearing 66 turnably mounted one spindle 67 with freedom for vertical adjustment and held by a set'screw (38 in different adjustments thereon. The spindle GT is carried by a bracket 67 on the adjacent frame end member? i "To form independent half babbitt bearings for the two-part-connecting rod end 00, divider-acting shims (39 are interposed between the members of said connecting rod end and held by the bolts 0;. These shims 69 engage the core sleeve 38 at diametrically opposite points and hold the connecting rod y against pivotal movement on the spindle 46 withits end as concentric with said sleeve. \Vhen a babbitt bearing is castrin a connecting rod having a single piece end, the concentric rings 37 greatly assist the operator in positioning said end on the face plate 27 concentric with the spindle 39. After a babbitt bearing has set, a spanner wrench, not shown, is applied to the hopper flange 4L3 and turned. The metal in said flange and on the core plate 40 will locksaid flange and plate together so that the top plate 40mm turn with the hopper flange 43 and thereby shear the metal at the inner ends of the apertures at, which is the weakest point. The hopper flange as and top core plate 4:4, together with the waste material therein, may then be lifted from the spindle 39, which is made easy by tapering said spindle. The spindle as may be set the correct distance from the spindle 39 by means of a templet or a connecting rod. and after one set, babbitt bearings may be cast in any desired number of connecting rods and each thereof will be identical, the one with the other.
The machine has been described as used in casting a babbitt bearing in a connecting rod from one end thereof. For some connecting rods, it is desirable or necessary to pour the metal into the crank-receiving end thereof through a radial opening therein while the connecting rod is held in an upright position.
To thus cast a babbitt bearingQthe spring hook 2G is operated to release the track rail 23 and then operate the turntable 16 a onehalf revolution and thereafter move the intermediate turntable section 18 on its hinge 20 to carry the parts mounted thereon into the positions shown by broken lines in Fig. 1.
To cast a babbit bearingin the crank receiving end of the connecting rod through a radial opening while said rod is held in a horizontalposition, the. handwheel 1a is operated to release the table 10 and permit the same to be turned to either side of the frame as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 2.
In Figs. 1 to a, inclusive, the machine is provided with a mold for casting babbitt bearings directly in connecting rods. In
Figs. 5 and 6, said machineis provided adapted to receive and hold the lower end ofthe core box 7 O concentric with the core. sleeve 71.
Supported on the upper end of the core sleeve 71 is a top core plate 75 having an axial opening through which projects a stem 76 secured in the upper end of the core sleeve 71 and axially aligned with the stem 7 3. ()n the periphery of the core plate 75 is an annular flange 77 adapted to receive the upper end of the core box and hold the same concentric with the core sleeve 71. A 'hopper flange 78 is removably telescoped onto an extended central portion of the top core plate 75. Molten meta-l poured into the hopper Hang-e78 will flow into the mold through apertures 79 in the top core plate 75. To hold the several parts of the mold shown in Figs.5 and 6 in assembled relation, there'is provided a clamping attachment comprising a pair of upright anchor .bars 80 attached to the bar extensions 35 by forming in the lower ends thereof eyes 81, through which said extensions project,
and are secured thereto by thumb screws 82.
In the upper end portions of the anchor bars 80 is a multiplicity of longitudinally spaced holes 83 adapted to removably hold a pair sides of the cotter pins 84 to connect said bar 85 thereto. Carried by the clamping .bar 85 isfa pair of clamping screws 86 which impinge against the top core: plate on each side of the stem 76 and hold the several parts of the mold assembled.
After the Babbitt metal has set the same is sheared in the apertures 79 byturning'the hopper flange 78' with a spanner'wrenc-h, as previously described.
To form the babbitt hearing A in two parts, thin divider blades 87 are interposed between the core box members and engage the core sleeve 71 at diametrically opposite points. In case the babbitt bearing sections stick in the core box 70, the same may be pressed therefrom by screws 88 which have threaded engagement with the sections of said core box.
Referring again to the machine as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the hopper sleeve 78 is provided with a plurality of internal upright grooves 7 8 into which the metal flows to positively prevent said sleeve from slipping on the metal when turned to shear the metal at the inner ends of the apertures 79. A stop pi11'7" is secured to the frame '7 and arranged to be engaged by the track rail 23. andhold the same in an upright position when the face plate 27 isturned into a vertical position shown broken lines in'Fig. 1 e i i T During the heating of the connecting rod and the mold, the trat'ellerol must be loose on the track rail 23 so as to move during the expansionof the connecting rod to prevent bendingof the same. i
In case the connecting rod has been bent, one end thereof may be placed over the core sleeve .88 and the other end over the. spindle A6, and thus held While being straightened; l i
