To all "whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR R. (:lus'inirsox,
a citizen of the United States residing at Chicago, Cool; County, Illinois, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements in Belt Guards, of which the followiug is a specification.
The present nnprovement-s relate to guards for protecting the workman from injury due to his proximity to a rapidlymoving belt. Their chief objects are to provide a simple, strong, durable and effective guard which may readily be applied in its protecting position. and. in its pretlierred and most advantageous. (illlllOLlllllGl'l'il, with out the labor and expense of boring or otherwise multilating and also weakening the barlike element to which it is secured; to provide a guard which may readily be adjusted for use according to the requirements of the particular installation; and one which is peculiarly adapted for use in connection with a belt carried by a pulley on a swinging arm which is longitudinally adjacent to the path of travel of thebelt. Other ob jects and advantages will appear herein after.
In the accompanying drawings. which t'orm a part of this specification, Figure l is a fragmentaryperspective ot a swinging saw device having a preferred embodiment of the present improvements applied thereto;

The swinging saw device may be considered as of a well-known construction. Tl; includes a swinging arm 10 mounted to rock on the axis o'f-the pulley 11 on the shalt 19. and a belt 14? on the pulleys l1 and 15, the latter being mounted at the lower end of the arm 10 for driving the saw 16. The operator moves the swinging arm and saw back and forthby means of a handle as 17 shown as being secured upon the arm 10.
My improved guard device includes a clamp block 19 having a substantially-V- shaped opening 20 in one side adapted to engage and grip the arm 10, or the arms 21,
spreading flanges each having a substaiw adjustable flexible membershown as a chain 22 and 28 (Figs. 5, ('3 and 7) as well as arms or supports of still other cross-sectional torms. The outer surfaces of the block 19 is preferably-formed with a recessed trans verse seat at 2% defined by marginal ribs 6 or projections 25 whereby a bracket member. as the flat bar 26 (Fig; 1) may be held firmly upon the block by a single bolt. The block 19 is provided with a transverse bolt recess 27 at each end whereby two bolt memhers as 28 may be applied to or removed from the block without removing the nuts 30. The block 19 is preferably a casting and, for the sake of lightness as well as to v accommodate the bolts 28 and the hooks upon them. it is preferably hollowed out, as well shown in Figs. 3 and at, whereby the part of the block which contacts the arm as 10 substantially inthe form oi two tially-V-shaped opening 20. . Each of the clamping bolts 28 has a hook -32 upon which is held readily removably an 33. The bracket bar 26 is slotted at 29 for the bolt 28. and when the parts are assembled as in Fig. 1 the bar 26 is held securely and for lateral adjustment by one of the bolts 28, and the block 19'is held firmly upon the arm as 10 by both bolts 28 and. the chain 33 passing around the arm, as well shown in Fig. The block 19 may thus be readily clamped upon the arm without dismantling the saw device in any way, wlthout boring,
and without any other multilation' of the arm. The slot-like recesses 27 in the block enable the bolts 28 to be positioned so as to accommodate arms, as 10, of various widths and to bring the flexible member close to the sides of the arm for better hold ing effect. The chain. is materially long whereby it may be hooked upon the bolts 28 at such links as will make it of the desired effective length. "for arms. as 10, of various thicknesses.
A guard proper 35 shown as a fiat piece oi sheet material, such as thin sheet metal, is held in overlying position with respect to the belt 14 by connections intermediate the block and the guard proper. These connections include the plate or bar 26 already mentioned. Another bracket part is the bar 36 having a longitudinal slot 37 for the bolt 38 adapted to hold the guard 35 upon the bar on, and the bolt 39 is also in this slot 37. Another bracket part is the plate or bar ll) having a slot ll for the bolt 39.
The bracket part l0 has its end at formed at right angles to the general direc tion of this part and this end lil has a hole for the bolt a8 which bolt is accommodated in a slot at in the bracket part 26.
From this construct-ionit is clear that the guard proper 35 may be adjusted so as to overlie belts traveling on pulleys of different diameters by meansof the bolt in the slot 4.4, and. that the guard may be adjustably positioned in a direction at right angles to the one ust mentioned by means of the bolts 38 and 39; It is also'clear that another guard as 35 may be positioned on the opposite side of the arm 10 if desired, or that a guard as 35may be positioned so as to overlie either section of the belt as the particular situation may suggest.
The importance of a guard of this character is that without such protection breakage of the belt is likelyto result .in severe injury to the workman. standing immediately in front of the belt when the saw is being used. The guard also protects his saw-swinginghand and arm, and it also avoids contact with the belt by lumber pieces being handled.
Reference should be had to the appended claimsto determine the scope of the improvements herein set forth, I claim:
1. The combination of a pair of pulleys spaced apart, a belt operatively on said pulleys, one of said pulleys being carried by an arm mounted to rock on the axis of the other pulley, clamping means on said swinging arm, a guard proper overlying the belt, and means between the guard proper and the clamping means for holding the guard proper in itsbelt-oyerlyin position. v 1
The combination of a pair 01 pulleys spaced apart, a belt operatively onsaid pulleys, one of said pulleys being carried by an arm mounted to rock on the axis-of the other pulley, clamping means on said swinging arm, a guard proper overlying the belt,
.and adjustable means between the guard proper and the clamping, means for holding the guard proper in its belt-overlying position.
3. A belt guard of the character described comprising in combination a pair of clamping members each of which has a jaw adapted to engagea bar adjacent to a belt, means cooperating with said clamping members respectively for holding the clamping members rigidly upon such bar, a guard proper adapted to overlie the belt adjacent to such bar,
and connection means between the guard by the bolt members, the arrangement being such that said member may be held tightly upona bar of the character described, a bracket member held ad ustably by said clamp members, and abelt guard proper held adjustably by said bracket member.
5.
