Be it known that I, Hnoo A. FUNK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inuFou-ntain Pens, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in fountain pens, and more. particularly to self-filling fountain pens. The object of the invention is iJO PFOVICliB means for completely depressing the ink sack and for positively expanding or re. turning said sack to its normal position.

A further object is toprovide a hinged connection between the lever and the ink sack. Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de scribed and claimed.

In the form of my invention illustrated in the drawing 1 have shown a fountain pen 10 comprising a barrel 11 and an ink sack 12 fastened upon the inner neck 13 of the pen in the usual way. A pressure plate 14 of metal or some suitable material is glued or otherwise firmly fastened or fixed upon the ink sack 12. A tongue 15 is pro-- vided on the middle of the plate and may be punched and bent upwards from the material of the plate itself, as shown in the drawings, or may be provided in any suitable form of any suitable material, and soldered or otherwise firmly fastened on said plate. An operating lever 16 of metal of some suitable material, is constructed with a lateral arm 17 for engagement by a fi m ger, and with a lateral arm 18 having a slot 19 provided therein, said slot extending into the body of the lever, 16.. The tongue. 15 is adapted to operate in said slot, and since it extends farther than the slot 19, it forms -a hinge connection between the lever and the pressure bar for positively returning the ink sack to itsexpanded position. The barrel 11 is provided. witha slot 21 to receive the. arm 17 of the lever and vwith a slot 22 to receive the arm 18 and to permit the body of the lever to slide therethrough.

In assembling the parts the lever is placed in the pen barrel in itsposition of rest, as shown inFig. 2 of=the drawing, and the ink sack is introduced into the barrel, the tongue 15 on the ink sack thereby en'- gaging in the slot 19 inthe lever.

To refill my improved pen. the lever. is first swung laterally at right angles to the pen barrel, as shown in dotted lines in Fig.

The: lever :is then depressed and slidthroughthe opening 22 laterally into the pen barrel, thereby compressing the ink sack, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The sack may thus be entirelydepressed instead of only to the extent of the length of the depressing arm on the operating lever, as in the usual construction on the market. The lever is now drawn outward, and since the tongue 15 extends over the arm 18 of the lever, beyond the end of the slot 19, the sack is positively drawn back into its expanded position.

tion, a flexible ink sack; a pressure plate glued onto said sack; an operating lever slidably extending through aslot in the pen barrel; and connecting means between said plate and lever, enabling said lever to positively. compress and expand. said sack by said lever moving at right angles to said pen barrel.

6. A fountain pen comprising in combination, a pen barrel provided with slots; an ink sack carrying and having attached thereto a pressure plate a lever provided with arms normally engaging in said slots; and

a tongue on said plate engaging in a slot in said lever, whereby said lever is swingable laterally from the pen barrel without depressing the ink sack, but is movable laterally outward to expand said ink sack.

7 A fountain pen comprising in combination, a pen barrel provided with slots; an ink sack provided with a pressure plate fastened thereon; a: lever provided with arms normally engaging in said slots; and connecting means between the lever and plate, whereby said lever is swingable at right angles to the barrel without actuating said sack, and is slidable through one of said slots to positively actuate said ink sack.
