The general object of my invention is to provide improved gas collecting means for retorts. and particularly for by-productcoke Fig. is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l

Connected to the usual gas outlet A in the roof of the retort is an, ascension pipe B formed as usual of a cast iron section and comprising a vertical portion and a horizontal portion connected to the collecting n i ain C which is Iormed ofmetal plate and runs lengthwise of the battery and separately connected to all the ovens thereof in the usual manner. A. cleanout opening normally closed by a door B is provided in the convex side of the elbow connecting the horizontal and vertical branches of the ascension pipe. Y
The section l3 forming the outer end of the horizontal portion of the ascensionpipe is secured to the side of the collecting main so as to opento the latter through a lateral opening C in the collecting main. Advantageously. asshown'. the end of: the sec.- tion 1) projects through the opening C and the section is formed with flanges B and B riveted to the side and top walls respectively of the collecting main.
' At the extreme end of the section B a seat is formed for a sliding valve member D which is inserted and withdrawn through a kerf or slot (see Fig. 3) formed in the section B projecting over the top of the collecting main. Grooves 13 formed in the opposite side walls of the section B below the kert B constitute a guideway tor the valve D. Advantageously; the ribs B forming the front walls oi the grooves P) are cut away as indicated at it somewhat above the bottom portion B of the valve seat.
The valve D may be drawn out of the section B to connect the ascension pipe to the collecting main by any suitable means' As shown. a portable jack E is provided for this purpose. the jack comprising a lifting element terminating in a hook E adapted to enter an eye D formed in the external end of the valve member. \Vhen the valve D is put in place it may be hammered to its seat and the external joints between the valve D and the walls of the kerf B may, be luted with lire clay. When thevalve member 1) is withdrawn. the kert' B may be closed by lilting clay alone. but preferably a removable slot closing member F is then inserted in the kert as shown in Fig. 3
and the joints between it and the section B sealed by luting clay.
Those skilled in the art will readily recognize that the construction illustrated and described possesses important practical advantages a nd overcomesdifficulties hereto fore experienced. and arising from the severe conditions to which such apparatus is subjected in use. I
In particular the hardened pitch and carbon deposits baking on the valve seat when the ascension pipe is in tree communica-' tion with the collecting main. as it is during the greater portion of the time. cannot prevent the valve from being inserted and properly seated. The form and character of the valve and valve seat insure that the valve will cut away enough of these deposits to permit the valve to seat when it is hammered home. The cutting away ot the ribs 15 permits the ready escape into the collecting main of the deposits cutout of the grooves it by the valve as the latter is forced home. Furthermore. the projection of the bottom B oi? the valve seat beyond the tion of the ascension pipe directly into the side of the collecting main and the character and arrangement of the cut-off valve permits the use of an ascension pipe having ahorizontal portion of mlmimum length. While 1n accordance with the provisions of i the statutes I have illustrated and described thebest embodiment of my invention now known to me, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes may be made in the form of apparatus disclosed without departingfrom the spirit of my invention as set forth in the appended claims. and that under certain conditions some features of my invention may be used to advantage without a corresponding use of other features.
