r u l l o a w to 111/ at may 0002.00; a. 1 lde 1t knownthat l, inens T and Dominion oi Canada, have invented cer train new and useiul improvements in Draft Equalizers, oi": which the following is a i specification.
This invention relates to draft equal .izers, and more particularly to. a device which is intended :tor use when there are two or morehorses in the lead and which willequalize the draft on all the horses. 1
i lit also has for one of its objects to provide a device which willlower the drafton the pole team,
back bands and belly bands on the horses remove any pressure from the forming the pole team and which will lower the traces of the pole team thereby preventing any rubbing of these members against the sides of the horses forming thepole 1 team. U
l Further objects are tomake a direct draft from the lead team or teams to the wagon to which the pole team is hitched, to eliminate lead rods and whiiiletrees for the leadteams,
to provide a device that is simple and not liable to go out of repair, and generally to adapt the severalparts to better perform the functions required of them. i i
, improved The invention consists essentially of the construction particularly de scribed in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part ofthe same and set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved draft equalizer.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the main tug.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view of a hame, showing the means used forconnecting of the improved equalizer thereto.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the equalizing member. i
Referring to the drawings:
A indicates a metal tug or connecting element preferably made of. steel, having at one end means to connect with the equalizing bar B and at the other, means toconnect with a strap or bar G which extends to the hame. Means to connect with the equalizing bar B include parallel spaced'plates 10 and llsupporting a pin 12 between them which is pivotally connectedto the equalizing bar B as by engaging in an open eye 13 atone endoiithe same. i ibove theplates 10 and 11 an eye oi floofg rfit is provided to receive the backhand of the horse, while at the bot tom of theplate 10' an' ottsetarrd inclinedeo loop or eye 15 1s provlded adapted toleng gage withthe belly band of the horse. U
Theequalizing bar B is made OistrOng and durable steel and is curved or inclined from one end to the other as shown, being provided intermediate of its length with a pivoted shackle 16 which, if desired, may be replaced by a perforation or eye in the equalizing bar itself and a plurality of on the end of the spaced orifices 17 and 18 bar remotefrom the eye 13. The shackle16 is designed to be connected to a suitable hook or tug 19 on the trace 23 which leads 1 to a whifiietree D, (see Figure 2).
The connection between the tugA and the 7 5 member Gcomprises a U-shapedmember 2 1 having pivoted pin 25 which extends through a looped end of the member C, the opposite end of the member embracing a,
any unemployed remaining orifices are used infa similar way if there are more horses pulling the load.
When several teams of horses are pulling a wagon, the pole team is usually the one makingthe first pull forward and, on such a movement, the curved arm or equalizer will be' drawn backward which will tighten the traces of the front horses hitched to the equalizing bar B. i
It will thus be seen that the front horses v on their first move forward will operate a direct pull on the lead as well as the pole horses, through the medium of the equalizing bar B.
As many changes could be madein the i above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention Within the scope of the claim, constructed Without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
A draft equalizer comprising a body portion having a central section, spaced integral plates on one side of the central section a connecting pin hetween said plates, one of the plates having an offset inclined eye integral therewith, a U-shaped member, formed integral With the body portion on the opposite side to that on Which the plates are formed, a pivot pin mounted in the said U-shaped member a tug having an end ex tending around the pin means for connecting the opposite ends of the tug to :1 heme, an equalizing bar having an open eye by which it may be connected to the pin between the spaced plates, means at the other end of said equalizing bar to receive a trace end and a shackle mounted on the bar intermediate of its length adapted to receive a trace end.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses. ANGUS BEATION. lVitnesses:
ALFRED E. CAMPBELL, Gel-ion WV. SIsIUs.
