This invention relates more particularly to a collapsible table 'for automobile touring purposes. Y

The object'of my invention is to provide an exceedingly simple, light and strong table' which` can be readily set up .o-rtalren down, and which utilizes, the running board of the machine as a place of storagefwhen traicling,` a means for support when' used as a table, and as a bench for the table on the car side.

I attain this result in the manner set forth in the' following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing. in t' Figure 1 is a side eleva-tion of this device. Figure 2 is 'a front elevation of Fig. land Figure 3 is a plan. Figure 4 is a perspective showing-the device folded up intofbox form. Figure 5 is a detail showing hinge construction. Figure 6 is anenlarg'eddetailshowing the manner of protecting the ends `of the table bo-ards. Figure 7 is a perspective view from the back of the folded table showing the manner in which it rests upon the' running board.`

Referring in detail to the drawing, I have constructed my device of four

leaf members

10, 11, 12 and 13 which are hinged side by side by means of three rows of continuous hinges 14. On the under side of thc leaf 13 I have hinged the angular members 15 whose ends are hinged to the straps 16 firmly secured on the under side of the running board 17. A cottered pin 18makes this con nection removable when it is not desired to carry the table on a car, or when it is desired to use it independently of an automobile.

Mounted on the ends of the leaf 12 are the vertical ends 19 which are braced by means of the metal boxes 2O attached to the leaf 12 and the inner side of the end 19. These box portions 21 may be utilized as best seen iit by the owner. A hinged brace 22 limits the movement between

12 and 13 to a straight line. The braces 22 are joined to the leaf 13 by means of the standards 23 and to the members 19 by means of the ears 24 on the inner side of the'members 19 to which they are secured by means of the bolts 25 which pass through the members 19, and also serve to secure the handles 26. Asimilar brace 27 limits the relation between the leaf 12 and the leaf 11 to a straight line.

` On the under side of the leaf 11 are two hinged legs'23 joined by means of the diagonal braces 29 to vthe rotatable hinges 30 on the under side of the leaf 13. A third brace 31 lends lateral stability to the `table and is also attached by means of a rotatable hinge 32 to the leaf 11 and at its lower end pro- 'vided with a hook 33 adapted to engage suitable holes in the legs 23.y Similar hooks 33A are attached to the-lower ends of the braces 29 and form an easily removable connection thereto.

A'swivel arm 34 is also attached to the under side of `the leaf 11 by means of a pivot 35 which also holds the clamping lever 36. whose use'will be ldescribed latter. The swivel arm 34'also forms a rest for the leaf lO'which is also provided with the perforated straps 37.

` On the under side of. the portion 15A of the hinge 15 I have placed a rotatable key 39 adapted to lock the member 15 in a rigid rela-tion to the member 15A, by engaging the slot 15C.

' "It will be seen that I have provided the I edges ofthe boards with a metallic'moulding 40 which is at once extremely rigid and easy to apply7 and at the same time protecting the end grain of the wood against moisture.

It will be seen that various styles of hinges may be employed for attaching the legs 23 or the

29 and 31 to the under side of the table top, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

In Figure 5 I have illustrated a hinge by means of which the legs28 are attached to the under side of the leaf 11. A metal clip 41 attached to the table leg 23 is hinged by the rivets 42 to an elongated base plate 43 rotatable on the pivot 44 which passes through a slotted plate 45. The end 46 of the member 43 projects beyond the face of the leaf 11 and forms a support for the leaf 10. The slots 47 receive the sides of the clip 41 when the leg 28 is being folded against the under side of the leaf 11.

Inusing my device as a table itis necessaryy only to disengage the members 37 from the portion 15"l of the hinge 15 and put the box into table form, as shown in Figures 1 to 3.- rfhe keys 39 are turned into a locked position, the braces 22 and 2T are moved into straight lines and the legs 28 are dropped to the ground. 29 and 31 are then put into place and the supporting armBl turned at right angles to the table leaves, and the table is ready for use.

lt will be observed that the running board 17 is utilized as a seat for one side of the table, thereby rendering it necessary to carry only suflicient camp stools for the remaining sides of the table. In event that it is desired to use the table in a tent or away from the machine it is only necessary to rest the leaf 13 upon stakes driven into the ground.

vWhile I have `thus illustrated and described my invention it is not my desire to limit myself to this precise form or method of application, but intend that it shallcover all forms and modications that fall fairly Within the appended claims.

a pair of angular legshinged to one of said leavesand tothe running board of a car, means for locking the upper portion of said leg rigidly to said leaf, end Walls formed on the leaf adjacent to said angularV legs, folding braces hinged `between said side Walls and their adjacent leaves, apair of folding legs under the leaves opposite the sides supported lbysaid angular legs, and means for holding said legs in a vertical position.

In an automobile table, the combination of four hinged leaves foldable in box form Withz a pairof angular legs adapted to support the `first of said leaves on the running board of an automobile, a pair of foldable legs supporting the third leaf and a rotatable locking hinge for each of said folding legs consisting of a plate having two parallel slots, said plate being adapted to be secured to the under side of the third leaf, an elongated baseplate rotatably mounted on a pivot placed betvveenk said slots, a forked clip secured to the upper endof the table leg, said clip having square ends pivotally joined to standards formed on said elongated plate in a manner that said squared ends may occupy said slots and'permit the leg to swing or to cause the squared ends to rest firmly against said slotted plate at right angles to said slots.
