SNAPPING- ROLL.
Application filed August 29, 1919. Serial No. 320,726.
To all whom'z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. MERWIN, a citizen of the Unitedv States, residing at Berwyn, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snapping Rolls, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act specification.
This invention relates to snapping rollsz and more particularly to snapping rolls for corn handling machines, such as corn huskers and Shredders.
It is commonin machines of this character to utilize rolls for feeding the material and for snapping ears from the stalks. It has been found desirable, however, to feed a portion of the earswith the stalks in order that these ears may be cut or shredded with the remainder of the stalk. 'The present invention has for its object, therefore, to feed a plurality of corn stalks longitudinally and to snap from the stalks a portion of the ears and to have this action the entire width of the feed roll, but to retain certain other ears and to feed them with the stalks.
In the present instance this invention is carried out by means of a snapping rollor if desired, a plurality of snapping rolls having longitudinal corrugations or ribs, certain portions of the corrugations being cut away to provide longitudinal recesses. In feeding the stalks by means of such a roll, the recessed portions will permit certain of the ears to be fed, while the remainder of the ears will be snapped off.
I have illustrated inthe accompanying drawings certain embodiments of my invention, and in these drawings Fig. 1 is a vfront elevational view illustrating my improved construction:
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view illustrating theV end portions of two coacting snapping rolls; and l Fig. 3, shown partly in section. is an end view of the construction shown in Fig. 2.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, I have shown a pair of snapping rolls, one of these rolls having the longitudinal recess above described, and the other roll having longitudinal corrugations or ribs extending throughout its length.
In Fig. '1 a roll 10 is illustrated, this roll being provided with a plurality of longitudinal ribs or corrugations, three of these ribs being illustrated and indicated by the reference characters 11, `12 and 13. It will be seen that cach of these longitudinal ribs is cut away for a third of its length, the rib 1l having its left hand third cut away, as shown at 14e, the rib 12 having its central third cut away, as shown at 15, and the rib 13 being cut away at its left hand, as shown at 16. The. other snappingroll 17 is provided with a plurality of longitudinal ribs or corrugations 18, these ribs being separated by longitudinal grooves 19. A plurality of bridge portions 20 is `provided to bridge portions of the grooves, thereby increasing the feeding surface of the i roll. If desired, however, the roll 17 may be made with the usual longitudinal ribs and grooves, or in other words, may-be longitudinally corrugated. l
IIavin described the structure of my improved snapping roll. I will now briefly set forth the operation of same. U
As the corn stalks are fed between the rolls 10 and 17 itA will be seen that the portion of the stalks disposed in the cutaway portion 16 will be allowed to retain their ears, the ears being fed forward with the stalks. After the roll 10 has rotated for a portion of its revolution, the intermediate recessed portion 15 will allow certain ears to be fed and subsequently certain of the ears will be fed through the recess 14C. Bv arranging the recessed portion in the maii-V ner shown and described, I have provider a construction which will not interfere with the feeding of the stalks. but will permit certain of the-ears to be fed with the stalks.
aile I have in the above specification described one embodiment of niv invention. it will be understood that the invention is capableof modication. and that modifications and `changes in the construction and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claims: l 1.*1-1 snapping roll having a series of longitudinal ribs disposed around its cylindrical surface, each of said ribs having a single cut away portion for a portion of its length,i the out away lportion on successive ribs being disposed in staggered relation so that the remaining portion of certain of said ribs aligns With the out away portion and a remaining portion of an adjacent rib.
2. A snapping ioll having a series of 5 longitudinal libs `formed on its surface,
each of said ribs having a Single out away poition foi a poition of its length,
certain of said ribs having the out away portion positioned adjacent the ends of said roll and Certain othei'of said ribs having l0 the cut away portion positioned Centrally with respect to the ends of said roll.
ln testimony whereof l alx my si nature.
GEORGE M. MEE WN.
