DAVID W. BOWE, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
ROAD CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed December 13, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID W. Bown, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county oflVayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Road Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to road constructions, and more particularly to novel means designed for securing the reinforcing elements of a road bed formed of plastic material while the same are being properly positioned.
An object of the invention is to provide stakes of novel construction for supporting the side forms and reinforcing elements of the road bed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a flexible base board which will conform to the contour of a road crown.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the in vention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a fragment-a1 plan view of reinforcing elements disclosing the same as positioned prior to the pouring of the cement or plastic material.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3is an end elevational view dis closing the portable supports as positioned prior to securing the same.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the invention embodies base boards 5 which are formed of any suitable material having flexible qualities so that the same will conform to the contour of the crown of a road, the lengths of the boards 5 being equal to the width of the road to be constructed.
These boards 5 are disposed in spaced relation with each other throughout the length of the road bed, and-as shown, each of these base boards is provided with a groove 6 formed intermediate the side edges thereof and extending throughout the lengths thereof.
Serial No. 522,096.
Side forms 7 form parts of the construction, and are provided with cut out portions to accommodate the base boards 5, and engage the same adjacent to the outer ends of the boards 5 to eliminate lateral movement of the boards with respect to the side forms. Reinforcing rods indicated at 7 are positioned longitudinally of the road bed and are disposed at various levels to reinforce the road bed at points adjacent to the upper sur face thereof as well as at the base thereof.
Positioned between the side forms 7 are the portable supports 8 which are substantially triangular in formation and provided with suitable recessed portions to accommodate the rods 7 to support the same in their proper position prior to application of the rods to brace bars 9 and 10, which form a permanent part of the road reinforcing structure. These bars 9 and 10 are provided. with openings to accommodate the rods 7, and as shown the bars 9 are disposed at angles with respect to the base board 5, the lower ends of the bars 9 being disposed in the grooves 6 of the base board 5.
The lower extremities of the brace bars 9 are supported in properspaced relation with each other, as by means of the brace bars 10 which connect with the rods 7 adjacent to the base boards 5. Angle bars or crown bars are indicated at 11 and are designed to embrace the upper ends of the brace bars 9 to secure the same against movement. These crown bars are held in position as by means of the side forms and also by stakes 12 which have angular arms 13 conforming to the angles of the crown bars to insure a close engagement between the crown bars and arms 13 to prevent movement of the crown bars with respect to the arms 13.
The side forms are held in vertical positions as by means of the stakes 14, which are provided with right angled arms 15 especially designed to embrace portions of the upper edges of the side forms 7. 'lransversely extending rods 16 also form a part of the reinforcing construction and are held in position as by means of the side forms 7, and are also connected with the longitudinal rods as by means of wire securing members 17 which are constructed of wire looped around adjacent portions of the rods and twisted in a manner to secure the same in position.
In construction of a road bed the base boards are positioned proper distances a art, andside forms 7 are now positioned a ong the outer edges of the road construction and secured in position by means of the stakes 14. The rods 7 are now positioned on the portable supports and drawn from same through the brace bars 9 and 10, and secured in position.
After the rods and bars 9 have been properly positioned, the ends of the bars 9 are positioned in the grooves of the base boards The stakes 12 are now secured over the crown bars to secure the same against movement, after which the plastic material or cement may be poured around the reinforcing structure. Prior to the setting of the plastic material, the crown bars and stakes 12 are removed for further use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A road construction embodying longitudinal and transversely extending reinforcing rods, base boards having grooves, brace bars connected to the reinforcing rods and having their lower ends disposed in the grooves, and portable supports for support ing the rods prior to the application of the reinforcing bars.
2. A road construction embodying longithe crown of a road, transversely extending bars connecting the rods for securing the same in proper spaced relation with .each other, angular brace bars connecting the rods, a crown bar including angular surfaces and means embracing portions of the crown bar for securing the structure in an upright position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signa ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
DAVID W. BOWE.
