Be it known that I, Ronnn'r Lmosr, s citizen of the United States, esiding at Canto n, in the ooun'ty of Fulton and State ofIllinois, have invented oertain'new and useful Improvements in Mail Boxes-of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to mail boxes and has for its object to, provide a device of this character capable-0t uutometicell delivering the mail whenthe' cover of t e box is opened.

It is another object of the invention top ovide-n device offthis chnrncter wherein means are provided for movubly supporting the mail within the box, said means being operatively connected to the cover or lid of the box so as to projectthe mail when the cover is opened or raised.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a. device of this character wherein the mail delivering means also serves to hold the cover in its raised position while the mail is being inserted.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to behereinufter more )artiouhirly described, fully claimed and il ustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a mail box constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention,

Ref iarring to the drawings, 5 designates a casing or mail box open at one end, the sides of the box at said open end being tapered upwardly toward the top of the box. A cover or lid 6 is hinged at its upper end to the top of the box and adapted to extend over the open end to close the some. The cover 6 is provided with flanges 7 adapted to extend over the edges of said open end to prevent the entrance of the elements. The lower portion of the cover extends below the bottom of the box to provide opening means for the cover' In order to position the mail within the box so that it may be readily removed when the cover isopencd without the necessity of the-operator extending the hand into the box, there is provided novel mail holding means embodying a shaft 8 ads ted to extend lute-rally of the box, the encs 9 and ll) of the shaft extending through the sides of the box and then positioned at right angles to the main portion :of the shaft to revent d sengagement of the shaft from t e box. Projecting fromthe intermediate portion of the shaft-8 is an armll having-an eye 12' in its end. A mail holding arm 15 is provided, one end of said arm being coiled around the end of the arm 11 and through the eye 12, while the intermediate portion of the arm is dieposed in the eye 14. The end portion 17 of the arm 15 projects beyond the eye 14 and is: formed into a mail holdin hook 18. To permit. actuation of the inui holding means upon raising theoover, a connecting rod 19 is provided, one end of said rod being coiled about the eye 14 above the arm 15, the rod being longitudinally curved so as to clear the eclve of the to ofthebox. The end20 of the rod is pivots y connected to an e e 21 carried by the. intermediate portion 0 the cover 6 adjacent its upper end.

In use, the cover is raised, and throu h the medium of the connecting rod 19, t c holding arm 15 is extended beyond the open end of the box. The mail may then be engaged with the hook 18 and the cover lowered, thereby causing the connecting rod to oscillate the shaft 8 and move the mail holding arm inwardly of the box. When the cover is raised by a person desiring the mail, the same operation takes place, that is, the end 1? of the mail holding arm is directed outwardly of the box so as to permit the operutor to remove the mail without inserting the hand in the box.

From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides novel means for receiving: and holding: mail within convenient reach of the person using! the box. so that the mail may be quickly removed. It
