.DEVICE EUR RETAXNING OVERSHOES 0N SHOE.
Application lled May 18,
To all, whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX -ORDAKowsKn a citizen ot' the United States, residing at.
Clarksburg, in the county of Harrison and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Device for Retaining Overshoes on Shoes, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to a device for use in connection with rubbers or overshoes, for retaining them upon the shoes, and preventing improper displacement thereof.
An important object of theinvention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is of simplified construction, and is self-adjusting to permit of the bending of the ankle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is adjustable within limits, for connection with shoes of different heights-z Other objects and advantages of the-1n vention will be apparent throughout the course ot the following description.
In tl1eac;:ompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a deviceembodying my invention, showing the same applied to an overshoe and shoe,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of thefdevice removed,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the clamp, f
Figure 4 is a peispective view of a modification of the device, and,
Fig. 5 is a perspectiveview of the device shown in Fig. 2showing a slightly different use.
ln the drmvings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention. the numeral 5 designates an overshoc,l and (3 the upper of the shoe. 'l
My retaining device embodies a strip 7, i'orined of sheet metal or the like, having laterally extending stop lugs 8, formed thereon. The strip l' is provided at its top with curved ears 9. slidably receiving a courting strip 10, also preferably Jformed of sheet metal. The stripl() is provided at its lower end with curved ears ll, slidahly engaging the strip T beneath the stop lugs 8, and adapted to contact with the stop lugs. It is thus seen that the strip 10 is free to with respect to the', shoe,

move lon itudinally with relation to the strip 7, t
e distance between tlie ears 10 and stop lugs 8. At'its u per end` the strip 10 is bent inwardly and ownwardly, forming ahook 12, engaging over the upper edge of the upper The clamp is carried by the lower end of the strip 7 and this clamp preferably embodies spaced sides 13, carried by a bottom 14, referably serrated upon its inner side, as s own at 15. The sides 13 are extended 1n the form of arms 16, within which is pivoted, at 17, a lever 1 8. This lever carries a compression element4 or roller 19, eccentric with the pivot 17, and adapted to press the material of the rubber into engagement with the serrations 15, Y In the u'se of this form of the device, the hook l2 is placed over the top of the upper 6as shown in Figure l, while the clamp engages over the upper portion of the back of the overshoe 5f The strip 10 may move longitudinally suiciently with relation to the strip `7, to permit of the bending action of the ankle. The device will prevent any undue movement ofthe overshoe 5 downwardly by stop lugs 8 contacting with the ears l1. I In Figure 5, the hook l2 is shown engaging over a strap 12, which enoircles the ankle of the wearer.v This strap is empio ed.
when the device is used with slippers or ow shoes.
I n Figure 4, l have shown a slight modification of the device, and this modification is designed tor use in connection with high shoes, frequently worn by women. In this form of the device,'the stri with and the strip 7 slidabif engages an intermediate strip 20. The strip 20 is provided at its lowerend with curved ears 21,
. arranged beneath the stop lugs 8, and adapted to contact therewith. The intermediate strip 20 is in engagement with an upper adjusting strip 22, provided at its lower ends with curved ears 23, slidably receiving the strip 20. The strip 20 is provided at its top ywith a hooked tongue 24, adapted for insertion within selected spaced openings 25 in the strip 22. The adjustingstrip 22 has itsV upper end.bent downwardly 'into a hook 16, engage over the top of the upper. It is olxvlousthat the length of the device may be permanently adjusted by placing the tongue`2t in a selected opening 25, and when the device is applied to the shoe, the inter- 10 is dispensed mediate strip 20 will slide with lrelation to the strip 7 Within the limits of the distance betweenY the. stop lugs 8 and the ears 21.
.The same form of clamp is carried `by the strip claim 1. A retaining'device Jfor overshoes, comrising a strip provided with ears and vhav;` ing laterally extending stop lugs, a co act\"\. ing strip held Within the ears and having'`v ears slidably receiving the first named strip and. adapted to engage with the stop lugs, said coacting strip being permanently free to slide upon .the first named strip whereby said strips automatically partake of relative longitudinal movement upon the bending of the ankle in walking, a hook formed, upon one end of the co-acting strip, and a' clamping device carried by the other strip.
2. A retaining device for overshoes, com- Walking and positively limitingsuh'longitudinal movement in one direction, a holding element carried by one of the strips topangage over the top of the upper, and a (slampv carried by the other strip 'to engage With. the overshoe. f s y 3. A retaining device forfovershoes,l comprising a pair of co-aeting strips 4slidably engaging each other, said coactingstrip being-permanently free to slide upon the first named strip means tol ermit one strip to automatically move longltudinally with relation to the other upon the bending of the kankle in Walking and positively limiting suchlongitudinal movement. in one direction, 'a clamping device carried by one strip to engage with the overshoe, and an. adjusting strip longitudinally adjustably mounted upon the other strip and adapted to engage over the top of the upper. .In testimonywhereof I FELIX oRDAKoWsKi.
