Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. REDDIGK, OF NILES, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-PADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,253, dated September 30, 1873; application file September 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. REDDICK, of Niles, Berrien county and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness-Pads, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, shows, in Figure l, a side elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a vertical longitudinal view through the diameter of the same.
Like letters of reference marked on the drawing denote like parts referred to in this specification.
This invention relates, in its nature, to the construction and' use of hollow flexible metallic harnesspads, to be used in lieu of the common stuffed leather pad; and consists in turning up the edges of plates of zinc or other metal, making them cupping in form. Slots or perforations are made through the raised edges of the pad at short intervals. This makes the pad flexible, so as to conform readily to the shape of the animal, and allows of a free circulation of air through the hollow pad. This carries olf the animal heat, and cools the pad to about the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere, thus preventing, in a great measure, the scalding and galling of the animal wearing the harness so formed.
In the drawing, A represents a section of the back-band of a harness. B represents the hollow pad. C is the raised edges of said pad, and D is the perforatins or slots for the passage of airthrough the hollow pad. E represents a thin plate of metal. Thisfplate is permanently attached to the leather part of the harness, and forms a stay for the hollow pad. Suitable stays are fastened across the raised edges of the pad to hold them in their proper position.
I am aware that harness has been lined with zine; and plates of zinc have been put under the bearing parts of yokes and harness for their supposed healing qualities. This I do not claim; but y What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hollow flexible zinc pad B, having the slots D D D, and forming a constituent part of a harness, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
WILLIAM A. REDDICK.
