To all whom it may concern o. y
lBe it known that l, Gusrar ns'rei/r, a subject oi2 the Kin of Sweden, residing at Stockholm, in the ingdom oi Sweden, have invented certain new and useiul improvements in Machines for Packing Cigarettes or Similar Articles, ot which the following is a s ecication.
'ilhis invention relates to a machine tor packing` cigarettes or similar articles 1n paper-bags, boxes or the like of that class, in which the cigarettes by a suitable mechanism are mounted in a predetermined numloer in a portioning chamber or chute, "from which they are then pushed into the paperloag' or box. According to the invention the machine is provided with a eeler mechanism, which is located at .the said portioning charnberand, it the chamber does not contain the predetermined number ot cigarettes causes a device to eiiect a mark in the paper-bag, which has received the incomplete set ot'cigarettes, so that the said paper-bag may be removed trom. the other bags, containing the proper number ci cigarettes.`
lin the accompanying drawings Fig. i Shows in a side view partially in section a cigarette packing machine arranged in acp cordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 in Fig. l. Fig. 3 shows the feder-mechanism and Figs. t and 5 show a marking device in two diiterent positions.
in the drawings the invention applied to a machine ot that class, in which the cigarettes l are located in a hopper 2 and fed from the same into two vertical channels 3 and 4, separated from one another by a partition wall 5', bytwo rotating drums t3 and 7 provided in their periphery with grooves 3. From the said drums tand 7 the cigarettes are caused to pass into the channels 3 and d by suitable guiding members 9, 1l and l2. The partition wall 5 extends downwards into a portioning chamber bottom 23 of the said chute is carried by a rod 24, the top end oi which has a slot for the wall 5. The rod 2i is movable in suitable guides and -is engaged by a lever arm 25, iixedto a shaft 26. A second arm 27 is iixed to the shaft 26 and, actuated by a spring or the like, not shown bears against a cam disk 28, provided on a rotating shaft 29. At the top of the chute is shown i922. Serial No. teti.
22 two knives 30 and 31 are provided, one at each side ot the chute. 'lhe said knives are carried by arms V32 and 33 respectively, swingably mounted on shafts 34 and 35. Arms 32 and 33 are provided with toothed segments 36 and 37, engaging one another. A spring 38 fixed to the traine of the machine and an arm. 39 connected with the arm 33 tends to move the knives 30 and 3l toward one another. An arm t0 is connected withthe arm. 32 and bears against a cam disk 41 tired on. the shaft 29.
. in Fig.. l a portion ci ten cigarettes is located in the chute k22, iive on each side ci the wall 5, and the knives 30 andL 31 are cigarettes, are located in pockets provided 1n a drum 4t2, whlch is rotated step by step in the direction, indicated oy the arrows in Figs. d and 5. is one oi the said pockets is opposite to the chute 22, the paper-bags 43 contained in the said partition is pushed by an arm or the like not shown upon a nozzle di, connected with the chute. A plunger 45, actuated in any suitable manner, then ushe's' the said portion ot' cigarettes into the paper-bag and returns the latter into the pocket. liter the end flaps of the bag has been folded and pasted together, which is eii'ected during the continued rotary motion ci the drum 42, the bag is removed from the pocket. These operations may be effected in any suitable manner.
fitter the cigarettes have been pushed Vfrom the chute 22 in the described manner,
and the plunger 45 has been returned, the bottom 23 is raised to the knives 30 and 3l. The knives 30 and 31 are then withdrawn quickly by the earn disk il, whereupon the cigarettes contained in the channels 3 and l fall down unto the bottoni 23. The latter is then lowered slowly by the cam disk 28,
this inventlon are provided, one at each side of the chute.` The said feelers are swingably4 mounted on the shafts 34 and 35 and acted upon by springs 50 and 51, which tend to move the feelers inwards into the chute. Feelers 46 and 47 are provided with arm 52 and 53, adapted to /actuate a lever 54, 55 fixed to a shaft 56 and co-operatng with a rotating cam disk '57. While the notch 58 of the said cam disk 57 passes by the lever arm 55, the lfeelers 46 and 47 are permitted to move inwards, acted upon by the springs 50 and 51. lf the chute 22 is iilled up with cigarettes, the teelers will bear against the uppermost cigarettes in the chute andk no motion of the/feelers will take place. lf, however, one of the compartments of the chute 22 or both the compartments do not contain'the proper number ot cigarettes, as is the case with the right hand compartmentyin Fig. 3, the feeler 47 is swung inward by its spring 51, as shown in F ig. 3. Arm 53 ot the feeler 47 then iorces the lever arm 54e downwards against the action of a spring 72. ',lo the shaft 56 a second arm 59 is hired, which, consequently, is forced downwards together with the arm 5d. 'llhe said arm 59 actuates an arm 60 of a catch 61, which is swingably mounted on a pin 62 and by a spring 63, hxed to the frame of the machine, is held in engagement with a projection 6a provided on an arm 65, swingably mounted 0n a pin 66. Arm 65 has a roller 67, which, by a spring 68, hired to the arm 65 and the trame of the machine, is forced against a cam surface 69, provided on the drum d2. ln 'Figs i and 5 some pockets of the drum containing bags are shown. At each pocket a notch 70 is provided in the cam surface 69, permitting the arm to be swung inward by the spring 68, provided that the catch 61 previously has been disengaged. 'lhe top ed e 71. p s thel arm 59 is forced downward, a
stated above, it disengages the catch 61, so that the arm 65 becomes free and is swung inwards by the spring 68, the cutting edge 71 of the arm 65 being thus brought into the position, shown in Fig. 5, i. e. in the path of the paper-bagd. The incomplete portion of clgarettes has just before been introduced into the said bag,'and while the drum is rotated the edge 71 edects a notch in the bag which consequent-,l easily may be detected and then removed romthe bags end of the arm 65whas a cutting afname leaving the machine. Arm 65 is` then removed into the position shown in Fig. 4 by the cam surface 69, and the arm 59 is raised by the cam disk 57, so that the catch 61 engages the projection 64. At the same' 'lf the 4 the bags contained in the pockets .of the drum d2.
As the drum 42 and the mechanism rotating the same do not belong to the present invention, they are not more closely de'- scribed.
ll claim: l
.1. ln a machine for packing cigarettes or similar articles in bags, boxes or the like the combination with a portioning chamber, in which lthe cigarettes are located upon each other, of a fecler adapted to be forced against the uppermost cigarette in the said chamber and to enter the chamber, if incompletely illed,' a marking "device past which the bags containing cigarettes move, a catchlngmechanism normally holding the said marking device in inoperative posi- ,or similar articles in bags, boxes or the like tion, a motion transmitting device between the said feeler and catching mechanism, so that the ieeler, when entering the portioning chamber disengages the said marking device and the latter e'ects a mark in the incompletely lled bag, and means for reen aging the said catching device.
n testimony whereof l have axed my signature in presence of. two witnesses.
