CAR END REENFORCEMENT.
Application filed February 19, 1921. Serial No. 446,534.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, WILLIAM H. STIF- NAGLE, residing at Berwick, in Columbia County and State of Pennsylvania, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Car End Reenforcement, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the inven-' tion, though it is to be understood that the vinvention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof within the scope of the claims will occur to persons skilled in the art.
Tn said drawings:
Figure 1 is an end elevational view of a i mine car fitted with a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same;
Figure 3 is an isometric view of a detail of the invention.
My invention relates to car end reenforcements devised to prevent distortion of the brake ends of mine cars having distended body portions.
One object of my invention is to provide a car end reenforcement and tie adapted to stiffen and connect the ends of the oppo-= site overhanging side portions of mine or other cars.
Another object is toprovide a skeleton reenforcement of simple design and great strength.
In said drawings, 10 represents a mine car having distended or overhanging body side portions 11 comprising floors 12 and wall portions 13. Between the overhanging body portions 11 are the usual intermediate floor and wall portions 14 and 15 respectively, supported upon the usual running gear (not shown). The body is completed upon provision of end wall boards 16 formed to seat upon floor portions 12 and 14 and between wall portions 13 and 15 and suitably held in position, the whole being held by the usual end stirrup 17 shaped to the contour of the body and secured with bolts 18, or in any other approved manner.
Enclosing the ends of the side walls 13 and floors 12 of body portions 11 are gusset 24 extending across the car end and rigidly secured to the webs 20 of the pockets by rivets 25, or in any'other way. A substantial portion of the tie bar 24 overlaps a pocket 19 at each end and is secured along its overlapping length to the web 20 of the adjacent pocket to prevent relative rotation of said parts. The web 20 of each pocket functions to maintain a fixed angular relation between adjacent wall and floor portions of the car body.
The arrangement of such pockets in connected pairs further operates to preserve the integrity of the car end as a whole and prevent any tendency on the, part of the extended portions to sag. The pockets extend above and below their respective points of connection with the tie bar 24 to equalize the load stresses on said pockets and insure a balanced pull on the tie bar.
When in position on the brake end of the car the device lies well against the end wall of the car, protecting the ends of the overhanging sides from injury, and preventing distortion of the car body under the severe racking stress of service. The device has no protruding parts that would in any way pair of flanged pocket gussets and a con- 1105 necting member, said gussets having their flanged portions extending above and below said connecting member.
4. In an end reenforcement for cars having distended body side portions and an end 1116) pocket gussets and a connecting erally from said upright marginal portions vof pocket gussets enclosing the ends of said distended side Wall and floor portions, and means connecting said pockets.
7. In a reenforcement for car ends, a pair of substantially triangular gussets having upright marginal flanged portions, i, lower marginal flanged portions extending lat- 7 and a tie bar connecting said gussets, said tie bar having rigid connection with said gussets at a point above said lower marginal flanged portions and below the upper ends of said upright marginal flanged portions,
8. A car end reenforcement comprising a pair of flanged pocket gussets, car body members secured to said flanges and a connecting member joining the webs of said gussets.
9. A car end comprising end, side and floor members, pocket gussets connecting said side and floor members and means connecting said gussets independently of said end members.
10. A car end comprising end, side and floor members, pocket gussets relnforcing the corners formed by said members. and means joining the gussets of each car end independently of the car end members.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set myhand in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. STIFNAGLE.
