Be it known that I, CARL NmLsnN, a citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Feeding and Gathering Nfechanism for Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general lto improvements in sewing machines used in the manufacture of gloves and more particularly to improved mechanism for feeding, gathering and sewing the rounded or moccasin shape finger tips of gloves.
rlhe object of the invention is to provide feeding` and gathering` mechanism for sewing machines of the class described, that will be simple of construction, positive and effective in operation, capable of high speed operation and that will be durable with the highest practical speed of operation.
Another object is to provide mechanism to produce a perfect moccasin shape of the finger tops of gloves either with or without sewing the Ltip or leather strip on the finger ends. In other words, the moccasin shape may be formed in the leather at the tip of the finger without at the same time sewing` it. rihis operation may afterwards be performed with an ordinary sewing niachine.

Referring to Figures 5, 6 and 7 in the drawings, 8 represents the needle bar of any. suitable drop feed, shuttle or looper sewing machine. 9 is the needle and 10 the presser foot bar upon which is secured the presser foot member 1l by any suitable means. rlhe presser foot 12 is hinged to the front of the member il by means of a pin 13 and is provided with a diagonal slot 14 and needle recess l5. A flat retainer spring 16 is secured to the front end of the presser foot preferably by means of a screw 17 and the foot is recessed underneath, to receive the spring 16, the lower end of the spring projecting slightly below the foot as shown clearly in Figure 7.
Suitablemechanism (not shown) but common to sewing machines in general is provided for exerting downward pressure on thepresser foot l2 and also for raising it when required. 18 represents the base plate of a Singer lock stitch machine having the needle plate 19. retainer spring or blade 20 having a serrated end 2l is secured on top of this plate in the front and to one side of the needle. rlfhe usual slots 22 and 23 are provided in the plate 19 through which the conventional feed dog 211; operates.
A circular slot 25 is cut in the needle plate directly in front of the needle in which the crimping or gathering feed dog 26 operates. The feed dog is fastened to the feed bar 27 and is given the usual vertical feeding movement by the feed bar 27 operated from the oscillating shafts 26 and 29. These shafts are oscillated or rocked by mechanism common to sewing machines, which it is thought unnecessary to illustrate or describe in the present invention. The feed bar 27 is pivotally connected at 30y to the rocker arm 31 extending upwardly from the shaft 28 and is given a horizontal reciprocating movement from the oscillations of this shaft. At the same time a vertical oscillating movement is imparted to it from the shaft 29 by means of the arm 32, having a roller 33 engaging a slot 34 in the bar 27. 35 represents the shuttle and 35"L I It is also necessary in order to sew the tip in a perfect circular form and keep the edge: of the work in constant contact with the roller edge guide, that the gathering feed dog is given a circular movement in a path correspondingto the circular form of the;
finger tips as shown in Figure 5. For this purpose l provide the following simple mechanism connected to and cooperating with the feed bar 27. An auxiliary feed bar 36 to which the gathering feed dog 26 is secured, is pivoted on an oscillating rectangular bar 37 at 36 rests slidingly on the bar 27 at 26a. A coil spring 39 attached to the shuttle race at 4() (Figure 4) and to the bar 36 at 41 holds the bar 36 in contact with the bar 27. A guide loop 42 (Figures l and 4) projecting .from the feed bar 36 embraces slidingly the rectangular bar 37 to keep the feed bar 36 in proper alignment. rfhe oscillating bar 37 is adj ustably supported on pivot pins 43, threaded in lugs 44 on the base plate i8 and provided with locking nuts 45. arm 46 on the shaft 26 is provided lwith a "universal stud 47, and a connecting rod 48 has capped socket connection 49 with the stud 47 permitting universal movement around the stud. rl`he rod 46 is connected to the auxiliary feed bar 36 by means of a sliding-ly adjustable section 50 and a clamp collar 5l by which the length of the rod may be adjusted. The oscillations of the shaft 28 imparts a swinging horizontal movement to the auxiliary feed bar 36 and in order that the length of the movements may be adjusted for different classes of work, a circular slot 52 is provided in the bar 36 and an adjusting plate 53 having a slot 54 through which a clamping screw 55 passes into threaded` connection with the bar 36, is provided with a pivot stud 56 passing through the circular slot 52 and rigidly secured to the connecting rod section 50. By loosening the clamping screw 55,y the pivot connections of the connecting rod may be adjusted in the slot 55 and brought neareror farther away from the pivot point 38 of the bar 36 thus increasing or decreasing the horizontal stroke of the bar and feed dog 26. In the operation of tipping7 a glove it is important that the An upright work be held sideways against a support or edge guide in order that the stitching may be uniform and close to the finger tip edge all around. The ordinary device for this purpose consists of the roller guide 57 arranged in a bar 58, slidingly mounted in kbrackets 59 secured to the top of the bed plate 18. A spring 60 tends to hold the roller 57 with sufficient pressure opposite the needle to prevent the work passing beyond the presser foot. A cam arm 6l provided with a handley 62 is pivoted at 63 to the bar 5S. By turning'the handle to the dotted position shown in Figure. l the roller guide is let up against the work and by turning it to the full line position the roller is removed from contact with the work.
l'n the manufacture of leather gloves the tip which is usually a -narrow strip of leather 64 is sewed to the finger sections 65 of the glove for the purpose of strengthening the finger tips and preserving the shape.
lnthe operation of my invention the fingerl section, cut to a suitable formis placed under the presser foot with the'tip on top passing through the slot in the presser foot. Both leathers bear with their outer edges against the roller guide as shown in Figure 5. A row of stitches 66 is then sewed near the outer edge, securing the tip to the finger section. The hinge i3 of the presser foot permits the front end of the foot to rise to accommodate itself to the greater vertical throw of the gathering feed dog 26. The differential movement of the feed dogs 24' and 26 changes with the adjustment of the pivot 56 with respect to the pivot 38.
The differential horizontal movements of the feed dogs 24 and 26 are in an inverse ratio to `the distance .from the center of oscillation of the auxiliary feed bar to the point of connection with the connecting rod and to the feed dog 26, provided the horizontal strokes of the feed bar 27 and connecting rod 48 are the same. .The ratio of the horizontal differential movement may be varied by changing the connecting point of the rod as heretofore' described.
It has been found that a linear differential movement of the two feed dogs is incapable conforming to the shape of the finger tips and at the same time, to constantly force the Work against the roller guide to cause stitching uniformly close to the edge. The angularity and radius of the arc of travel of the feed dogs is governed by the location of the center of the arc and may be varied to suit different Work and conditions.
In order to shape the leather into the desired moecasin form, the tucking and compressing movement of the auxiliary feeder n is in oblique relation to the primary feeder and substantially in the arc of a circle7 the feed dogs oscillating around a fulcrum or pivot located upon the same side of the feed dogs as the radial center of the semi-circular toe of the moccasin rlhe auxiliary compressing feed dog should, to obtain the desired results, be located in the rear of the retarding primary feed dog, the oblique relation of the feeder causing the material to be fed with a turning movement and the difference in feed producing the desired tucking or bunching of the goods to obtain the moccasin shape.
Both the primary and auxiliary feed dogs have a firm unyielding support and drive mechanisms. These features and constructions, aptly illustrated in Figures 1, 5 and 6, comprise the special characteristics of the invention for forming the moecasin tip" of the glove fingers.
While l have slioivn the mechanism for forming leather and similar material into inoccasin sha-pe as an attachment to a sewing machine, with means for simultaneously attaching finger tips thereto, the novel and positive method by which material such as leather is tucked and the fibers of the material forcibly contracted and structurally displaced will of itself produce a permanent moecasin tip on a special forming machine, the stitching being performed on an ordinary sewing machine, if desired.

I claim as my invention:
l. A device for forming moecasin shaped linger tips in gloves comprising a primary feed bar having a feeding movement, an auxiliary feed bar in the rear of said primary feed bar having a movement the mean direction of which is at an incline to the line of feed of said primary feed bar for feeding the finger tip in a curved path and means for imparting a greater feeding movement to said auxiliary feed bar than to said primary feed bar.
2. A device for forming moccasin shaped finger' tips for gloves comprising a primary feed bar having a feeding movement, an
auxiliary feed bar in the rear of said primary feed bar and having a movement the mean direction of which is at an incline to the line of feed of said primary feed bar, for feeding the finger tips in a curved path ahead of the primary feed bar, the pivot for said auxiliary feed bar being centrally disposed with respect to the center of said curved path to oscillate the auxiliary feed bar in a corresponding curved path.
3.V A feed and gathering mechanism for sevving machines forming the moccasin shape of glove finger tips comprising a frame, an auxiliary feed bar having universal pivot connections to said frame, a feed dog on said feed bar, means for oscillating said feed bar in a horizontal plane, said means having pivot connection to said bar at a point intermediate said pivot and said feed dog and means for imparting movement in a vertical plane to said feed bar.
4L. A device for forming moccasin shaped finger tips for gloves comprising a primary feed bar having a forward feeding movement, an auxiliary feed bar in the rear of said primary feed bar having a movement the mean direction of which is at an incline to the line of feed of said primary feed bar for feeding said finger tips in a curved path ahead of said primary feed bar, a pivot for said oscillating feed bar, relatively disposed. to the center of said curved path to oscillate the auxiliary feed bar in a corresponding curved path, and means for imparting` a greater feeding movement to said auxiliary feed bar than to said primary feed bar.
5. A differential and gathering feed mechanism for sewing machines comprising a frame, a main feed bar having pivot connections to said frame, said connections imparting a limited horizontal feed movement to said feed bar, a feed dog on said bar, an auxiliary feed bar having universal pivot connections to said frame, a feed dog on the auxiliary feed bar, some distance removed from said universal pivot connections,means for supporting the auxiliary feed bar on said main feed bar at a point further removed from thepivot of said main feed bar than the feed dog of said main feed bar, and means for oscillating the auxiliary feed bar in a horizontal plane to move said feed dog a greater distance than the horizontal movement' of the main feed bar.

In a feed and gathering mechanism for sewing machines forming the moccasin shape for glove finger tips, the combination with a main feed bar having an oscillating feed movement of a pivoted auxiliary feed bar having a circular horizontal reciprocating movement and supported by said main feed bar, a rocker arm having a. pivot for universal movement, a connecting rod between said pivot and said auxiliary feed bar CIV and means for adjusting the length of said connecting rod. y
7. 1n a sewing machine for forming the mocassin shape of glove finger tips, the combination with a frame a sewing needle and needle plate, of gathering and feeding mechanism, comprising a hinged presser foot, a retaining spring 1n said presser foot, a
y retaining spring on said needle plate, a roller l a needle plate, a roller edge guide, means for feeding the nger tips, differential circular feeding mechanism for gathering and tucking the finger tips in a circular path under the needle and against the roller guide and means for simultaneously feeding the tip and sewino` it circularl'f to the finger ti 3s.
9. The combination, with a presser foot and a primary feed bar having a forward feeding movement, of an auxiliary feed bar arranged in the rear of said primary feed bar and having a movement the mean direction of which is at an incline to the line of feed of said primary feed bar, and means co-operating with .said primary and auxiliary feed bars for compressing some of the fibers of said material forwardly and vfeeding the material in, a curved path to forma moccasin shape.
10. The combination, with a presser foot and a primary feed bar having a forward feeding movement, of an oscillating auxiliary `feed bar arranged in the rear of said primary feed bar and having a movement the mean direction of which is at an incline to the line of feed of said primary feed bar, means cooperating with said primary and auxiliary feed bars for feeding material for glove fingertips between said presser foot and said feed bars in a curved path away from said feed bars, means for tucking said material between said feed bars to form the finger tips into a moccasin shape.
1l. A. device for forming a moccasin shaped finger tip for gloves comprising differential primary and auxiliary feeds mounted to operate in oblique relation and feed the same piece of material in a curved path.
12. A device for forming a moccasin shaped finger tip for gloves comprising differential primary and auxiliary feeds mounted to operate in oblique relation and feed the same piece of material in a curved path, said auxiliary feed operating faster than said primary feed to gather the material. v
13. A device for forming a moccasin shaped tip comprising differential primary and auxiliary feeds operating in oblique relation, said auxiliary feed operating in a curved path.
14;. A device for forming a moccasin shaped finger tip comprising differential primary and auxiliary feeds mounted for operation one in front of the other to engage and feed the same piece of material in a curved path to form a moccasin shape.
15.1K sewing machine attachment comprising differential primary and auxiliary feeds mounted to engage and feed the same piece of material in a curved path to form a inoccasin shape, and means for increasing or decreasing the feeding stroke of said auxiliary feed. y

A feed and gathering mechanism for sewing machines comprising a main feed bar, an auxiliary feed bar arranged transversely with respect to said main bar, main and auxiliary feed dogs on said bars, one in front of the other, and mechanism for imparting an engaging and disengaging movement to said feed bars and dogs, and a differential feeding movement thereto, for the purpose specified.
17. A feed and gathering mechanism for sewing machines comprising a main feed bar having a vertical and horizontal oscillating movement, an auxiliary feed bar mounted transversely of said main feed bar and resting thereon and also having an oscillating vertical and horizontal movement, a spring for yieldingly holding said auxiliary bar upon said main bar, feed dogs mounted upon said bars respectively, one in front of the other, and mechanism for imparting a differential feeding movement to said feed bars and feed dogs.

A feed and gathering mechanism for vsewing machines comprising a main feed bar, an auxiliary feed bar having a reciproeating movement in a curved path, a rod pivoted at one end and connected with said auxiliary feed bar at its opposite end and said rod having means for adjustment for changing the stroke of said auxiliary feed bar.

A feed and gathering mechanism for sewing machines comprising a main feed bar, an auxiliary feed bar, feed dogs for said bars mounted to engage and feed the same piece of material in a curved path to form a moccasin shape, said feed bars having a differential movement for gathering the material, the mean direction of movement of said auxiliary feed bar being at an incline tothe line of feed of said main feed bar, and
1 sansa means for varying the ratio of such differential movement, for the purpose specied.

A feed and gathering mechanism for sewingmachines comprising a hinged presser foot having a slot therein fer feeding a nan row strip to the wcrlr, a retaining spring in said presser foot for bearing on the work, a main feed bar and feed dog therefor, an auxiliary har and feed dog operating obliquely with respect 'to said main feed bar, the mean direction of movement of said auxiliary bar being at an incline to the line of feed of said main feed bar, and mechanism for imparting differential feeding movement to said main and auxiliary feed bars.
:21. i feed and gathering mechanism for sewing machines comprising a slotted needle plate, a hinged presser foot having a needle and strip feeding' slot therein, main and auxiliary feed bars and feed dogs therefor operating through the slots in said needle plate for engaging a single piece of material between said needle plate and said presser foot, the slot in said presser foot being adapted to receive the needle and a narrow strip to be stitched to the material engaged by the feed dogs, and mechanism for imparting a dierential movement to said feed bars and feed dogs, said auxiliary feed bar operating obliquely with respect to said main bar to feed the material with a turning movement.
22. ln a sewing machine, the combination, with a needle plate having a slot therein, of a main feed dog operating through said slot, said needle plate also having a curved slot therein in the rear of said first named slot and an auxiliary feed dog operating in said curved slot and mechanism for imparting a differential feeding movement to said main and auxiliary feed dogs, and operating said auxiliary feed dog obliquely with respect to said main feed dog.

The combination, with a sewing needle and needle plate, of gathering and feeding mechanism comprising a presser foot, a rolle i' edge guide, means for feeding finger tips under the said needle, and differential feeding means for gathering and tucking the finger tips in a curved path under said presserl foot and against said roller edge guide.

The combination, with a sewing needle and needle plate, of gathering and feeding mechanism comprising a presser foot, a roller edge guide, means for feeding finger tips under the said needle, and differential feeding means for gathering and tuclring the finger tips in a curved path under said presser fot and against said roller edge G0 guide, said presser foot being adapted to deliver a tipping strip to said differential feeding means.
25. The combination, with a sewing needle and needle plate, of gathering and feeding mechanism comprising a presser foot having a slotted opening therein, differential feeding mechanism for advancing the material in a curved path and feeding a tipping strip through said slotted opening, said differential feeding mechanism including main and auxiliary feed bars, the mean direction of movement of said auxiliary feed bar being at an inclination to the line of feed of said main feed bar.
