DIESCHER.
TILE 0R BLOCK FOR BOILER BAFFL ES.
Application filed March 18, 1920. Serial No. 366,946.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,-SAMUEL E. DIESCHER, residing at Wilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United. States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful .Im rovements in Tiles or Blocks for Boiler aifles, of which improvements the following is a specification.
It has heretofore been the general practice to construct tiles or blocks employed in forming baffles for boilers of fine clay or lated from the latter by the comparatively cool and therefore non-conducting portions closely adjacent to the surfaces of the tiles in contact with the tubes.
The object of the invention described here in is a construction of tiles or blocks for baflies so constructed as to permit of the formation of packed joints between such blocks. It is a further object of the invention to'form thetiles or blocks of a material having a high heat conductivity attempe ratures generated in boilers.- The lnyention is hereinafter morefully' described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawlngs forming a part of this specification, Fig. 1 1s a view in elevation of boiler tubes having a baffle formed by my improved tiles or blocks and Fig. 2 is a sectional view on .a plane indi-;
cated by the line 11-11, Fig. 1.
In the practice of the invention the blocks or tiles 1 are made of lengths approximately equal to half the greatest distance between adjoining boiler tubes and each 1s prov1ded at one end with a'groove 2 into whlch a portion of a tube will project when the tile or block is placed in position. The opposite end of each'tile or block is so constructed as to permit of the packing of the joint between abutting blocks, as for example, by
grooving the ends of the tile or block as shown at 3. it will be generally preferable to, make the tiles or blocks symmetrical and hence the grooves 2 and 3 at opposite ends of each block are made similar one to the other so that the surfaces of both grooves will form a tight joint with the tubes. When forming a bafile the tiles are placed in position and the passage formed by the grooves in the abutting ends are filled with a suitable packmg material, such as asbestos, which being forced in by more or less pressure will cause the'surfaces at the opposite ends to bear tightly against the tubes.
It is characteristic of fire clays. and other refractory-compositions that they are nonconducting at temperatures to which a boiler tube is heated in practice, and hence when baflies are formed of fire-clay, the high heat to which intermediate portions of the bafiie are raised cannot be utilized as there will be a thin layer adjacent to the surfaces in contact. with the tubes which will be non-conducting and will prevent theheat from such intermediate portions being conducted to the tubes. As for example, intermediate portions of the baflie may be raised to a temperature of 1500 degrees F. or more while the surfaces in contact with the tubes will have a temperature of not more than 400 degrees F. and this non-conducting film or layer will prevent the utilization of the thermal units in the intermediate portion.
It is characteristic of the invention herein heat at any temperature generated in the boilers and in order that the heat absorbed be taken up by the bafiie the areas of the surface in contact or designed to contact with the tubesare made; large relative to the mass of the block or tile so that whatever heat is absorbed or taken up by the block or tile will be rapidly and efi'ectively conducted to'the tubes and the blocks themselves become in effect heating surfaces for the boilers.
I claim herein as my invention;
1. A baflie for boilers having in combination two similarly shaped metal blocks or sections having a combined length approximately equal to the distance between adj au end concave for engagement with the tubes and a yielding acking interposed bet-ween adjacent ends 0 the blocks.
2. A bafile for boilershaving in combination two blocks or'sectlons having a combined length approximately equal to the distance between adjacent tubes and having their ends concave for engagement with the boiler tubes and the formation of a pocket for the reception of a suitable packing, whereby the blocks are maintained in operative position between adjacent tubes.
3. .A tile or blockfor boiler baffles formed SAMUEL E. DIESOHER.
