Some o the uobtjects of the present invention are-1 w place in temporary confinement upon a shingle of any kind, a fastening element such as a nail, to be used for the attachment of the shingle; to confine a fastening element upon a shingle in such a manner that the element may be readily removed from its confinement for the shingle attachin operation; to attach a nail or nails to a shingle in a manner, so that the said nail or nails will be confined at a point beyond one edge of the shingle to facilitate the removal of the nail or nails, and to facilitate the shipment of the shingles so equipped. With these and other objects in View the invention resides in the particular provision and the relative disposition of parts hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 4 isa modified form of the invention, in which one holder is shown for a plurality of fastening elements.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing for details of the present invention, it will be manifest that, there is shown a shingle 10 which ma be of any configuration, and which may e made from any preferred material such as wood, asphalt, or any other soft composition, either in strip form or of a single piece of material. Fastening elements as adjuncts of the shingle are held in temporary confinement thereon. The shingle is marked to indicate the points at which the saidfastening elements should be driven for the attachment of the shingle.

Each of the fastening elements 11, preferably big headed nails, are held temporarily confined by the employment of a holder 12. Each holder 12 consists preferably of a single piece of thin tough fibrous material B tti,

or paper, which is bent upon itself to provide a plurality of portions13 and 14s. The portion 13 has an aperture 15 therein for a purpose to appear.

In combining the fastening elements 11 with the shingle 10, each of the elementshas the shank thereof extended through the aperture 15 in the portion 13 of its respective holder 12. The portions 13 and 14 of each holder are then brought together, after which a small tack 16 or the like is driven through the ends of the said portions 13 and 14 into the shingle 10, with the pointed end of the element extending upwardly. The elements 11 are arranged preferably along the upper thin edge of the shingle with one of said elements in alinement with one of the marks 17 From the foregoing it will be manifest that, the laying of shingles may be done in a more convenient manner because the nails will be handy at all times; the elements 11 may be readily torn from their holders for the attaching or nailing operation; the marks 17 indicate where the elements 11 should be driven.

In the practice of the present invention, it has been found that there is a saving of time and labor for the workman on the job, and that the combining of the said fastening elements in no way affects the shipping of the shingles, but that the shingles may be bundled as is desirable.

In the form of the invention shown in Figure 4, the holder 18 is comparatively large so as to accommodate a plurality of fastenj ing elements or nails 19. The holder is made from a single piece of material and is bent upon itself to provide portions 20 and 21. The portion 20 is provided with a series of holes through which the shanks of the nails 19 extend. Under this arrangement there is a saving of materiah'time and labor. This form of the invention is shown to make it obvious the any number of holders for the fastening elements ma be employed, and that there may be one astening element for each holder or there may be a number of fastening elements for one holder.

What is claimed is:

1. A shingle embodying a headed attaching element temporarily confined thereon at the top edge thereof and disposed transverse? with respect to said top edge.

2. sa. new product of manufacture, the combination of a shingle, holders secured thereto, and a nail carried by each of said holders, as and for the purposes specified.

3. As a new product of manufacture, the

combination of a shingle, fibrous holders each havin a portion with an aperture therein, an nails carried by the holders with their shanks extending upwardly through the apertures for the purpose specified.

4. As a new product of manufacture, the combination of a composition shingle, fibrous holders secured along one edge of said shingle, each of the holders consisting of a single piece of material bent upon itself to provide parallel portions, certain of said portions each having an aperture. therein, big headed nails carried by said holders with their heads clamped between the said portions and with their shanks extending upwardly through the said apertures respectively.

5. As a new product of manufacture, the combination with a shingle having indicating marks thereon and kerfs therein, of paper holders secured along one edge of said shingle and extending outwardly therefrom. each of the holders consisting of a single piece of material bent upon itself to provid parallel portions, certain of said portions each having an aperture therein, big headed nails carried by the holders beyond the edge of the shingle with their heads clamped be tween the said portions and with their shanks extending upwardly throu h the apertures in the said portions respectively.
