2Sheets-Sheet"1. J. PFFENBARGER.`
Carriage-Top Setters.
N0, 143,183. Patented September23,873.
h illl UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONAS POFFENBARGER, OF FARMERSVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-TOP SETTERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,183, dated September 23, 1873; application led April 5, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JoNAs POEEENBARGER, of Farmersville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Impr-.vement invOarriage-Top Setters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side View ofmy invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view ofthe same.
This invention has relation to means for setting carriage or buggy tops; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices constituting an adjustable gageframe and plumb for this purpose, with an arc and curved slot, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the side standards, which, when in use, are designed to be clamped ou the buggy-seat. These standards are connected by the foot-board h and the transverse bank. B indicates the segment-boards, which are pivoted by means of screws a to the side standards A, and the pivot-screws pass through slots b in the segment-boards, whereby provision is made for adjusting the height thereof. The seg1nent boards are connected by the transverse bars O, and are provided with the adjustable slides D, whose position is regulated and fixed by means of suitable slots c and clamp-screws d. The angular position of the segment-boards is regulated bythe adjustment of the arcs E. These are provided with curved slots c and clamp-screws w for fixing the adjustment. Each segment-board should be provided with a spirit-level, as indicated at s on the drawings. A similar level is designed to be used, when required, in connection with the transverse bar k. Plumbbobs m are connected with the rear end of each segment-board.
In using the setting-instrument, place the upright portion or standards on the buggyseat and secure the same by clamping or otherwise. Level the segmentboards by means of the spirit-levels. Let down the plumb-bobs to ascertain the slant desired for quarters. The slides D are then to be raised against the rounds or bows of the top andsecured in position by means of the clamp-screws. The
height of the top can be regulated by adjusting the segment-boards up or down. It the top is desired to droop, the proper degree of slant can readily be given by means ofthe ad justable arc-braces E.
This description and the drawings relate to a setter for buggy-tops. For setting carriagetops the instrument is made in a similar manner, but extra segment-boards are required.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The pivoted segment-board B, with the are E and curved slot e, with or without a spirit-4 level and plumb-bobs, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
J ON AS POFFENBARGER.
Witnesses J. W. KREITZER., WM. H. LUKENS.
