Application filed February 19, 1921. Serial No. 446,472.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. HATCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Rotary Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rotary pumps, and relates more particularly to improvements in vacuum v or suction pumps, being especially adapted to the size and dimensions for use with milking machines, although its particular use is a mere incident.
The object of the invention is to provide a simplified construction with effective means for maintaining the relative position of the rotary piston and cylinder.
Ubjects which relate to details and economics of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
ll accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in' which:
Fig. l[ is an elevation View of a pump embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. H is an enlarged detail transverse sectional elevation View taken on line 22 of Fig. ll.
Fig. HT is an enlarged detail longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. Tl.
. lFig. TV is a detail inverted plan view taken on line 4L4= of Figs. TH and V.
Fig. V is a detail transverse sectional view taken on line 55 oflFigs. HI and TV.
Tn the drawings the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, 1 is the base. 2 and 3 are the end brackets or supports. Bracket 2'is provided with a ball bearing 4 in which revolves the driving shaft 5. Bracket 3 is provided with an enlarged supporting block 6 which carries the journaled support 7 for supporting the revolving parts of the pump. Within this support is the intake conduit 7. A fixed end bracket 8 chambered at 20 is carried on the support 7.
9 is the pump cylinder which is provided with a discharge passage 10 connected there to by the port 10. The cylinder is provided with heads 13 and 14:. The headl3 is provided with a hub 15 to which is secured the driving shaft 5 by suitable pinor other means. The head 13 is recessed at 16 to receive the guiding means and piston driving connections.
The head His provided with a hub 17in which are disposed ball bearings 18 supporting the same upon the journaled support 7. Packing 36is provided between the thrust surface at the end of the hub and the hol- A crank-shaped support 26 is provided with a ball bearing 27 which is eccentric to the main bearings of the cylinder and carries the said piston 21. Between the face of the piston 21 and the head 13 in the recess 16 is a guide plate 28 which has radial slots 29, 29 disposed at right angles to each other. In one set of radial slots are disposed the s uare heads of the square-headed pins 30, w ich have a driving fit into the face of the piston 21. In the slots at right angles thereto are the square heads of the pins 31 which are driven into thesaid cylinder head 13. It will thusbe seen that when the head 13 is driven by the driving shaft 5, this guiding membergives freedom of movement radially and drives the piston, rotating the same in unison with the cylinder and permitting the same to contact with the side thereof while it is being rotated at the same rate and parallel thereto. The plate 28 with its radial slots constitutes, with its coacting parts, a universal joint of the @ldham type.
A radial vane 32 is disposed in a radial recess 33 in the said piston and contacts with the inner wall of the cylinder between till intake port and the discharge port. The vane 32 is provided with lateral lugs 34 engaging in transverse slots 35 in the said cylinder heads. This vane is like that described in my concurrent patent application, Serial No. 446,469, filed Feb. 19, 1921.
Having thus described my invention, what I'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: t
1. In a rotary pump the combination of a cylinder, a cylindrical piston of less diameter than Said cylinder disposed eccentrically within the same to contact with the wall thereof, a fixed journaled support with bearings for the said cylinder, an offset cranklike portion with bearings for the said piston, means connecting a cylinder head to said piston comprising a floating plate with radial slots, pins on the said piston to engage one set of slots, and pins on the cylinder head to engage the slots at right angles thereto whereby the piston is driven and maintained in parallel position with the revolving cylinder, as specified.
2. In a rotary ump the combination of a cylinder, a cylin rical piston of less diameter than said cylinder disposed eccentrically within the same to contact with the wall thereof, a fixed j ournaled support with bearings for the said cylinder and bearings eccentric thereto for said piston, and a universal joint means connecting a cylinder head to said piston, whereby the piston is driven and maintained in parallel position with the revolving cylinder, as specified.
3. In a rotary pump the combination of a cylinder, cylinder heads, to one of which is connected an axially disposed driving shaft.
and a central hub on the other said cyliiider head, a fixed journaled support on which said hub revolves, an intake passage through said support, a chambered cylindrical piston of less diameter than said cylinder disposed within the cylinder, an oifset cranklike portion on the said journaled support'with suitable bearings for the said cylindrical piston, means connecting the driven cylinder head with the said piston comprising a floating plate with radial slots, pins on the said piston to engage one set of slots and pins on the cylinder head to engage the slots at right angles thereto, whereby the piston when driven is maintained in parallel position with the revolving cylinder, as specified.
4. In a rotary pump the combination of a cylinder, cylinder heads, to one of which is connected an axially disposed driving shaft and a central hub on the other said cylinder head, a fixed journaled support on which said hub revolves, an intake passage through said support, a chambered cylindrical piston of less diameter than said cylinder disposed within the cylinder, bearings eccentric thereto for said piston, and a universal joint means connecting a cylinder head to said piston, whereby the piston when driven is maintained in parallel position with the re- Volving cylinder, as specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses WILLIAM A. HATCHER. a 8.
