Description

G. (ELEMENTS. ADJUSTABLE REAR SUPPORT FOR VACUUM CLEANERS. APPLICATION FILED 050.29, 1921.
Patented Oct. W, 1922.,
GEORGE CLEMENTS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 CLEMENTS MFG. CO., OF
' CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE REAR SUPPORT FOR VACUUM Application filed December 29, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE CLEMENTs, a citizen of the United States, residin at hicago, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Rear Supports for Vacuum Cleaners, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention relates to a rear support for vacuum cleaner casings of the type wherein a bracket is made integral with or secured to the rear of the vacuum cleaner casing. A lever is pivoted to the bracket and a wheel is mounted at extremity of the bracket, as a rotatable rear support for vacuum cleaners. The purpose of my invention is to provide such a support as will be adjustable and simple and which will have no delicate parts or springs to get out of order.
I illustrate my invention more or less diagrammatically in the following drawings, wherein:
Fig. cleaner.
Fig. 2 is a section through the rear support of said vacuum cleaner.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is'a section on the line 4-4 of Fi 2.
Eike parts are illustrated by like symbols throughout the drawings.
In Fig. 1 I have illustrated a vacuum cleaner having a motor casing A, a fan cas ing B and a suction inlet or nozzle C. The details of the vacuum cleaner, except as described below, form no part of the present invention. The inlet nozzle is supported by adjacent wheels D which are illustrated as placed within or behind the suction inlet and may be disposed in any suitable way. The rear of the motor casing is supported by a bracket E which may be integral with the motor casing, but is illustrated as formed separate and secured thereto by the screws E. To depending bracket arms F is secured the (lever arm G within the depending arms G of which is pivoted a supporting wheel G The upper surface of the lever arm G is penetrated by a circular perforation H having a relatively narrow and long indentation H openin therein. Above the lever arm G projects the bracket arm I from the 1 is a side elevation of a vacuum main bracket body which is perforated as at J, above this perforation,
lying substantially over the slot H when the parts are in delicate CLEANERS.
Serial No. 525,766.
rounded by a peripheral groove. end of the wing bolt J may be inserted through the aperture H and the peripheral gIroove K around its end engages the slot when the lever arm G is moved to the right as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The device is assembled by thus threading the lever arm G on the pin and then moving the lever arm to the, right as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 to engage the slot of the lever arm with the groove about the pin. The lever arm G may then be bolted in place on the bracket arms. While I have illustrated an operative embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that a number of changes might be made in the shape, number, and relation of parts, and I do not wish to be restricted to the form of the invention herein shown and described.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows:
The wheel supporting lever is removably pivoted to the bracket-at the rear of the casing, which I illustrate as detachably secured, for example, by its screws. A thumb screw is screw threaded to travel in the rearward at the end of the thumb screw engages a slot in the lever, roughly above the axis of the wheel. An enlargement of this slot is provided for the the thumb screw, in case of repair, but the enlargement is out of line with the axis of the thumb screw, and the screw can be removed only after the lever has itself been removed from the bracket.
The adjustment of the position of the cleaner nozzle is efiected by the simple rotation of the thumb screw and there are no parts or springs to break or get out of order.
I claim:
'1. A rear support for vacuum cleaner casings comprising a bracket secured to the cleaner casing, a lever pivoted to said bracket, a Wheel mounted on said lever, an adjusting screw mounted in said bracket, its outer end being necked, the wheel supporting lever being slotted to retain said necked portion, said slot being enlarged at one end to permit the penetration of the end of the screw.
rear support for vacuum cleaners and the like comprising a bracket removably bracket and the neck lnsertion and removal of i mounted on the cleaner housing and proj ecting rearwardly beyond it, a lug downwardly rojecting from the bracket beneath the ousing, a slotted lever removably pivote 5 on the lug, a sup orting wheel mounted for rotation on the ever, an adjusting screw, threaded in the braeket extension and necked down to engage the slot in the lever, the slot having a narrowed portion adapted to engage the neck of the screw when the lever 10 is mounted in operating position and having a widened portion through which the screw may pass to disengage it from the lever when the lever is longitudinally displaced.
Signed at Chicago,
county of Cook and 15 State of Illinois, this 19th day of December,
GEORGE (ELEMENTS.
