' VACUUM CLEANER.
Application filed July 16, 1925. Serial No. 44,032.
This invention relates to a vacuum cleaner, and particularly to a vacuum cleaner intended to be supported by hand for the cleaning of automobile cushions, upholstered furs'niture, and other articles in which it is necessary or desirable to have a relatively small instrument which may beused in any position.
The object of the invention is therefore to provide a hand vacuum cleaner which is.
provide a vacuum cleaner, of the general character indicated, which combines the advantages of light weight and sturdy construction.
Figure 1 is a frontelevation of the complete device, showing the dust bag in operative position; Figure 2 is a side elevation oiijfthe same scale as Figure, 1, showing the Qdustfbag on the cleaner folded and fastened down in convenient position for stowing or transportationof the cleaner. M ;In the drawings the reference numeral 1 indicates the motor casin the actuating motor 2 o the mechanism. The motor 2 has a bearing 3 in the-rear wall of the casing, whichhas a fan housing 14 attached thereto. This fan housing 14 has a suction nozzle 18, and a discharge nozzle 19v formed integral therewith.
As shown, the intake extremity 22 of the suction nozzle 18 is inclined at an angle to the axis of the assembl This inclination permits the extremity o the nozzle to follow the surface of cushions or upholstery more readily, and gives a better inclination to the cleaner as held in .the hand of an operator. In order to increase the compactness of the devi-e as a whole, as well as to facilitate'its han ling, a handle 23 is mounted on the assembly by means of straps or bracket members. 24; so that the handle extends along and-above the assembly of the suction producing-mechanism. In order to further isfor containing cilitate handling of the cleaner the handle 23 18 mounted at an angle to. the axis of the assembly, this angle being approximately e ual to the angle of the discharge extremity of the suction nozzle. As shown, the brush 25 with which the device is perfectly protill vided, maybe made to form an equal. angle,
the line formed by the extremities of the brush members being parallel to the lines formed by the extremity of the suction nozzle and the handle.
The dust bag of the device is shown in position on the discharge nozzle 19 of the fan housing. This dust bag 26 isdesirably of relatively small size, so that it assumes an inflated and extended position without the use of any bag supporting means. It is desirable that the vacuum cleaner may be stowed under the seat or in the tool box of an automobile without either removing the dust bag or subjecting it to possibility of injury through contact with other articles inthe same receptacle. For this purpose a button 27 is secured to the body of theas- .sembly. as by a screw threaded engagement therewith, on the side of the handle 23 which is opposite the discharge nozzle 19. A tab 28 having therein a button hole 29 is secured to the dust bag. When therefore the dust bag 26 is deflated, it may be folded and buttoned down to the body of the assembly in the manner shown in Figure 2 and in dotted lines in Figure 1. In this position it is not so extended as to readily become out by or entangled with other articles, and it is also protected from injury by the overlyin handle of the device.
hat I claim is:
1. In a vacuum cleaner, a casing, a dust bag connected therewith and adapted to be folded and placed in folded condition against the casing, and cooperable elements on said bag and casin to engage one another when the bag is fol ed and placed against the casing to hold the bag in such position.
2. In a vacuum cleaner, a casing, a duct be connected thereto and adapted to be f0 ded and placed in folded condition against the casing, a securing element on the bag between the ends thereof, and a securing element on the casing adapted for the engagement of the aforesaid securing element when, the bag is folded and placed against the casing.
In witness whereof, I hereunto set my hand.
JULES K. JOHNSON.
