To all whom it may concern lde it known that l, WILLIAM E. FFINE, a citizen of the United @tates of America, residing at 'lloledo, in the county of Lucas and i itate of Uhio, have invented certain new and useful llmprovements in Gar-Doorltiocking Devices, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to new and useful improvements in car door locking devices and especially to a locking device that ia designed to hold and lock the drop bottil tom doors of a freight car.
Une of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a small casting in the form of a housing in which there is located a pivotal arm, a latch member pivoted to said arm and a dog for retaining the pivotal arm and the latch member in their locked position; the casting to be secured to the bottom of the drop bottom door and at one corner thereof, so that the latch member will engage and be supported on a hook which is fastened to the side of the car.

Still another object is to provide a double faced hook as, in a number of the cars in use today, drop bottom doors are so arranged that the outer ends of the doors when closed will be adjacent, therefore, a double faced, hook placed on the side of the car oentrally of the inner ends of the door will serve as a supporting means for the two doors, provided, of course, an engaging member for the hook is placed on each of said doors.

it is to be understood that a similar arrangement will be used on the other side of the car, as the doors are supported at both of their sides.
Of course, if the drop doors are singularly arranged in the car, a single faced plate may be used in each instance rather than a double one as, shown in the present embodiment.
With theabove objects in view, the in vention consists in certain new and novel arrangements and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the drawings.

Both of these doors are provided with transversely extending angle irons at, each having a leg riveted to the door bottom, these angles extendin slightly beyond the sides of the door as swam in Figs. 2 to 4t inclusive.
@ther transversely extending members might be used rather than angle irons, but l have found in practice that they are preferable due to their lightness, mode of attachment and strength.
Referring now in particular to the gist of the invention, there is shown in the several views a form of housing 5 which is plfif'l erably cast, this housing comprising a top securing plate 6, as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 2, a small web plate 7 and the main body plate 8' having the depressed portion 9 formed therein, from which extends the short bearings 10 and 11 which are drilled to receive rivets.
The forward end of this housing is provided with a top wall 12, a bottom wall 13, a front wall it and an outer wall'15 forming a box like chamber. The front wall it having formed therein a slot 16, the edges of which are slightly rounded as at 17 to bottom wall 13 and extending from the outer wall l5to the body plate 8 is a flange 18 which is also slightly rounded to form a resting point for the latch member 20 now to bedescribed. Pivotally mounted on the bearing 10 is the short arm 19 to the outer end of which is pivoted the latch 20 which is bifurcated as at 21 while at its outer end a portion is cut outcentrally to form the stubs or nibs 22. This latch member 20 passes throughthe slot 16 in the front wall 14 of the housing 5 as heretofore mentioned and is adapted to engage and'be supported on a ledge 23 formed on the edge of a plate 24:, the two outer stubs 22passing beyond the edge of the plate directly above the ledge 23, as may be clearly seen in Fig. 2.
Pivotally secured to the other bearin 11 is an irregular shaped cam or dog 25 w ich is provided with a lug 26 for manipulating the same, and extending between the two bearings 10 and 11 is the short plate or strap 27 which holds the arm 19 and the 25 on the housing.
do %he housing 5 in practice is secured to the door by riveting through the plate 6 and through the top wall 12, an offset end portion of the plate 8 allowing the top wall 12 to lie snugly against the angle iron 4. v The locking plate 24 has its opposite edge similarly arranged, that is,:with a ledge so that the one plate will suffice for the supporting of the two doors at one side of the car, while a similar arrangement will be provided on the opposite sides of the door and car.
The operation of the lock isexceedingly simple and will be readily understood from the foregoing description. When the door is raised to its closed position, the latch member will rest on the ledge 23 of the plate 24 and the dog will be forced downwardly against the arm 19, thus holding the armand latch member in their locked position. To release the door, the dog will be swung back I and the latch member retracted by forcing its inner pivotal end upwardly as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 1 so that the latch no longer rests on the ledge of the hook.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a means for supporting and lockin the drop doors of a car that is-relatively inexpensive to manufacture and made upof but a 'few parts, which are conveniently housed and in a relatively small space.
Many slight changes may be made without in any way departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a car having a drop bottom door, a locking device compnsing a housing secured to said door, a
latch in said housing, an arm pivotally secured to said latch, means associated with said arm for locking the same when said arm and said latch are in their locking position and means secured on the car body for supporting the door through said locking device.
2. A locking device for doors comprising a housing, said housing having a main body plate and a box like portion at the forward end thereof, said box like portion provided with a slot at its front face, a latch extending through said slot, an arm pivotally mounted on said body plate and connecting with said latch, said latch and said arm having a toggle action and a dog secured to said body plate for retaining the latch in its outermost position.
3. A locking device for doors comprising a housing, said housing having a main body plate, a box like section near its forward end, the said box like locking portion provided with a slot, a latch extending through said slot, an arm pivotally secured to the body plate and ivotally secured to the rear end of said Patch, the arm and latch having a toggle action, a dog for looking the arm and latch and a top fastening plate formed on said housing.
4. A locking device for doors comprising a housing having a main body plate and a substantial box like chamber, and a flange extending across said chamber, the front wall of said box like chamber provided with a slot therein and a latch extending through said slot, an arm pivotally mounted to the body plate and pivotally secured to said plate, said latch and arm having a toggle action, said latch resting on said flange when in its horizontal positions, andthe forward end of said body plate being d'e'p'ressed slightly offset.

A locking device for doors, comprising a main body plate, a box like casing formed at the forward end of said body plate and offset with relation to the upper surface of the said body plate, a portion of the body plate being, laterally depressed and bearings extending from said depressed portion, the front wall of said casing having a slot therein, a latch extending through said slot, an arm pivotally mounted on one of said bearings and having'its outer end pivotally secured to said latch and said latch and said arm having a to gle action, a dog pivotally mounted on t e other bearing and a strap extending from the outer end of one bearing to the other to retain the dog and arm on the body plate.
6. A locking device for swinging doors comprising a housing having a main body plate, a box like caslng'formed at the forward end of said body plate and being offset with relation to the upper main portion of the body plate, said. casing having bearings extending from said depressed portion, a dog mounted on one of said bearings,
