My invention relates to new and useful improvements in Car door locking devices and has for an object to provide a lock that Vmay be readily and quickly attached to a car having a drop bottom door, which lock is extremely simple in construction, readily assembled and quickly and easily operated.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a locking device comprising a bracket, on which is a small housing, and in which is mounted a pivotal hook adapted to engage a ledge formed on the door, so that the said hook will hold the door in a closed and supported position; and to further provide a lug on the hook above the pivoted point that is adapted to be held against movement by an arm which is also pivoted to the bracket, and to provide means for holding the arm in locked relation with the lugs formed on the upper end of the hook to thereby tightly lock the hook and the door in their closed positions.
Still another o'bject of the invention is to provide a locking device having but few parts, all of which are contained on a bracket, and to provide a ledge in the form of an angle iron that is to be secured to the bottom of the door and transversely thereof, which ledge will be engaged by the hook of the locking device when the door is in its supported position.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a .locking device that is relatively cheap to manufacture, compact in nature,v
and easily operated.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain new and novel constructions and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Referring now to the drawings, showing a preferred embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation showing the side of the door, the door being 'in its supported and locked position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more specifically to the invention, it will be seen that it comprises a bracket or plate 1, which is provided at several points with bosses 2, which are drilled for the reception of rivets 8 so that the bracket may be rigidly fastened to the side of the car 5. A plate 6 is also shown in Fig. 2 which may be placed on the inner side of the car body 5 through which some of the rivets may be passed, whiclr plate. of course, strengthens the car side at the point of attachment of the bracket. Also formed on the plate 1 is the integral casing 7 which is open along the upper and lower edges and in which casing is pivotally mounted the hook S, a countersunk rivet 9 `being passed through the upper end ofthe casing 7 and the bracket 1 for securely pivoting the hook within the casing. On the upper end of this hook 8 and beyond the pivotal point thereof is shown the outstanding lip or lug 10, the function of which will shortly be described. To a point below this lug 10, and to the left thereof (Fig. 1) is formed a boss 11 on which is pivotally mounted a locking arm 12, a pivot 13 forming the pivotal connection, while on the lower end of this arm and below the pivotal point is formed the weighted head 14.-, so that this arm 12 will normally assume the position as shown in the dotted lines as shown in Fig. 1. A further boss 15 is shown located above the boss 11, on which is pivotally mounted the dog 16, a countersunk rivet 17 forming this pivotal connection, while a lstrap 18 is passed from the boss 11 to the boss 15 for holding the arm 12 and the dog 16 to the bracket.
ln Fig. 1 l have shown the strengthening rib 19 as extending from the bracket 1 to the casing 7, and most of the parts are shown as cored to provide strength and achieve lightness, and it is to be understood that further ribs might be used if found necessary, or, the coring of the metal might be dispensed with.
A side of a door 2O is shown which is hinged at its rear end to a bracket 21, which bracket may be riveted to a center sill (not shown). Secured to the bottom of the. door and extending transversely thereof is an angle iron 22-which extends outwardly betion. When the locking device is in this position it will be impossible for thevhook to become accidentally disengaged from the angle 22, the locking devices therefore supporting and locking the door in its closed position.
To release the door, it will only be necessary to force the dog 16 rearwardly as shown in the dotted lines and the arm ll will swing to theposition also shown in dotted lines, thereby making it possible for the hook S to be swung `from disengagement with the angle 22, allowing the door to drop. To lock the door, ot course', the procedure just mentioned is reversed, the locking and unlocking of the device being but a matter of a moment.` I
Although I have shown only one side ot the door, and one locking device, it is to be understood that in most instances the same arrangement will be applied to the other side oi the car so that the door may be supported and locked Jfrom its opposite sides.
From the foregoing` it' will be seen that I have provided a locking device which is exceedingly simple 'in construction, efficient in service and relatively cheap to i'nanutacture.
Many slight changes might be made without in any way departing from the spirit and' scope of the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a car door locking device, a bracket, a hook pivotally mounted on said bracket and an upper portion of said hook projecting beyond the pivotal point, an arm pivotally mounted on said bracket and adapted to be swung into the path of movement of the upper portion of said hook, thereby holding the hook in a locked position, and means for locking the said arm in the said position.
2. A. car Vdoor locking device, comprising a bracket, acasing on said bracket, said casing being open along its upper and lower edges, a hook pivotally mounted onsaid bracket and within said casing, a lug formed on the upper end ofsaid hook, an arm pivotally mounted on said bracket adapted to swing into andl out oi the path of movement of said lug formed on said hook and means for locking the pivotal arm in the path of travel of said lug to thereby lock the hook in its forward and locked position.
3. A locking device :tor car doors, comprising a bracket, a hook pivotallymounted on said bracket, and a lug formed on the upper end of said hook, an arm pivotally mounted on said bracket and adapted to swing into and out of the path of movement of said lug formedgon-the upper end of said hook, andmeans for locking the pivotal arm in engagement with said lug to thereby hold the hook in its forward and locked position.

A locking device for car doors comprising a bracket, a casing on said bracket said casing being opened along its upper and lower edges, a hook pivotally mounted on said bracket and within said casing, a lug formed on the upper 'end of said hook and without said casing, an arm pivotally mounted on said bracket and weighted at its lower end, said yarm adapted to swing into and out ot the path ot movement ot' said lug formed on said hook and to normally be without the path of movement of said lug, and means for locking the pivotal arm within the path of travel of said lug to thereby lock the hook in its forward position in said casing.
5. In combination with a freight car having a drop bottom door and a ledge extending beyond the free edge of the door kand secured thereto, a locking device secured to the side of theV car body and .above said ledge, `said locking `device comprising a bracket having a hook pivotally mounted thereon, said hook engaging the ledge on said door when said hook is in its locked position, alug `:tormed on the upper end ot said hook, an arm pivotally mounted on said bracket, the end of the arm adapted to swing into and out of the path of travel of said lug, and means pivoted to the bracket for locking the arm in the path of travel of said lug tothereby hold the hook into engagement with the ledge on said door and tightly hold the door in its locked position.
6. In combination with a car having a ydrop door, an angle iron secured to the botto-m of the door, and extending beyond the free sideyof the door, a locking device secured to the side of the car body, and above said angle iron, said locking device comprising a bracket, a casing formed on said bracket, a hook pivotally mounted in said casing and adapted to 'engage the angle iron on said door when said door is in its locked position, a projection formed on the upper end kof the hook, means pivotally mounted on the bracket, adapted to swing into and out of the path ot travel ot the projection of said hook and further means to lock the first mentioned means tol thereby lock said hook in lengagement with the angle iron on said door.
7. In a door device for railway cars, the combination with a swinging door of a supporting mechanism therefor, the same being aliiXed to thecar body and comprising an outer and an inner plate, a door-securing hook pivoted between the two plates, hookretaining means overlapping but one of said plates, and means assing through one of the plates only andj through a portion of the car for securing the supporting' mechanism to the car body.
8. In a door device for railway cars, the combination with a swinging door of a supporting mechanism therefor, the same being alixed to the car body and comprising an outer and an inner plate, a door-securing hook pivoted between the two plates, hookretaining means overlapping but one of said plates, and means passing through one of the plates only and through a portion of the car for securing the supporting mechanism to the car body, the sai-d supporting mechanism being self contained and applicable to 10 the car body and removable therefrom as a single unit.
