Mdhlld PATENT NIELS HANSEN, OF EAST STANWOOD, WASHINGTON.
FOOT TREAIDLE.
Original application filed August 9, 1920, Serial No. 402,134. Divided and this application filed February To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Nmns HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Stanwood, in the county of Snohomish and State of \Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot Treadles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in foot treadles and more particularly to those intended primarily for use upon wood-sawing machines, although not restricted to this particular field of use, the present application being a division of my pending U. S. application, Serial No. 402134, filed August 9, 1920.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, yet a highly efficient and convenient foot treadle including upper and lower foot bars associated withv novel means whereby they may be relatively adjusted so as to be most conveniently operated by the user.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view through the foot treadle showing an operative association thereof with the adjustable seat of a wood-sawing machine.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the foottreadle, the frame of the machine being cut substantially on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 33 of Figure 2.
The numeral 1 designates a horizontal operating shaft of a wood-sawing machine, said shaft being rotatably supported by suitable uprights 2 in advance of an adjustable seat 8 for the operator. Apair of discs or wheels i are rigidly secured upon the drive shaft 1 and are provided with upper and lower series of peripheral teeth 5 with which the ends of upper and lower foot bars 6 and 7 are adjustably engaged. The bars 6 and 7 may be adjusted along the peripheries of the wheels 4: until the most advantageous and convenient position is obtained and although said bars could then be locked in position by any preferred means, I
Serial No. 53$,67.
have shown wedges 8 for this purpose, said wedges being driven into openings 9 in radial arms 10 which carry the foot bars 6 and 7, said arms being free to swing on the guide shaft 1. and being preferably, but not necessarily, formed of two sections secured together by one or more bolts 11.
It will be seen that the foot bars 6 and 7 pass through the opening 5 and that the wedges 8 are driven between these bars and the outer ends of the openings, so as to hold the bars in engagement with the teeth 5. When the wedges are removed, however, the foot bars may be adjusted along the teeth and may then be locked in any adjusted position by again inserting the wedges. Thus,
without the use of any tools except one by means of which the wedges may be removed and again driven, the operator may adjust the foot treadle so as to obtain the most efficiency therefrom.
Since excellent results have been obtained from the details disclosed, these details are preferably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may be made.
I claim:
1. A foot treadle comprising an oscillatory shaft, upper and lower foot bars parallel with said shaft and movable toward and from each other on an arc concentric with said shaft, and means for normally holding said foot bars against relative movement.
2. A foot treadle comprising an oscillatory shaft, arms extending upwardly and downwardly from and free to swing on said shaft, upper and lower foot bars extending between the upper and lower arms respectively, and means for locking said arms normally to said shaft.
3. A foot treadle comprising an oscillatory shaft, arms extending upwardly and" downwardly from said shaft and having openings near their outer ends, foot bars extending between said upper and lower arms respectively and having their ends received in said openings, discs secured to said shaft and having peripheral teeth to be engaged by said foot bars to hold the latter in adjusted position, and means for normally holding said foot bars in engagement with said teeth but for permitting outward movement of said bars in said openings when they are to be adjusted with respect to each other.
1-. A loot treadle comprising an oscillaby said foot bars to hold the latter in adtory shaft, arms extending upwardly and justed position, and wedges driven in said 10 downwardly from said shaft and having openings between their outer ends and said openings near their outer ends, foot bars 6X- foot bars, whereby to hold the latter nortending between said upper and lower arms inally in engagement with said teeth. respectively and having their ends received In testimony whereof I have hereunto set in said openings, discs secured to said shaft my hand. and having peripheral teeth to be engaged NIELS HANSEN.
