UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNHARD TANG, OF SCHENECTADY, NEW YORK, ASSIG'NORTO GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, A CORPORATION 0F NEW YORK.
ELECTRIC FUBNACE.
Application iled December w11; 1920. Serial No. 430,009.
-To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNHARD TANG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Furnaces, of which the following is a specication.
The present invention relates to resistance furnaces and comprises in particular a supporting structure for the heaters of electric resistance furnaces.
My invention is particularly applicable construction of large industrial furnaces, such as described for example in Collins Patent, 1,310,060 of July 15, 1919. In furnaces of this type, heaters consisting of heavy bands or ribbons of refractory met-al are hung upon supports projecting away from the furnace wall.
It has been suggested to constitute these supports of fire brick having a butt portion which may be laid into the furnace wall and an outwardly projecting portion upon which the resistor may be hung.
In accordance with my invention I have provided a furnace structure which is more durable and of greater electrical resistance at high temperatures by constituting the heater support of a plurality of members; namely (l) one or more hangers for the heater, these hangers consisting of a high grade material, such as alundum (largely aluminium oxide Al,O3),which is strong me chanically and electrically non-conductive at the highest temperatures attainable in a resistance furnace and (2) a base for the hanger consisting of ordinary fire brick or similar low grade refractory material.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. .l is a perspective view partly in section of au embodiment of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a ortion of the wall of an electric furnace embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing, the hanger, as
shown in Fig. 1, comprises a shank 3 and a stem 5. The shank conveniently may be of cylindrical shape and provided with grooves 4. The stem 5 is provided with flanges 6, 7. The shank 3 is cemented, or otherwise held, within a recess in a base member 8 consisting of fire brick or similar cheap refractor material.
shown in Fig. 2, the base members 8 are laid into a furnace wall 9 and the resistors or heaters 10 are strung back and forth upon the stem 5 between the ilanges 6, 7 The ends of the various resistor sections are connected by welding or brazing to terminals which ass through the wall. b What I c aim as new and desire to secure y1. An electric furnace heater support comprising a Wall member consisting of refractor brick, and a hanger for an electric heat er ]oined thereto, said hanger consisting of more highly refractory material than said brick.
2. A heater support for electric furnaces comprising two members, one which is adapted to be laid into a wall and the other bein adapted to project from said wall to retain an electric heater in desired position, said outwardly projecting member consisting in part at least of alumina.
3. A heater support for electric furnaces comprising an anchoring member consisting of fire brick and a hanger cemented thereto consisting of alundum.
4. A heater support for electric furnaces comprising a brick consisting of refractory material and being provided with a recess and a hanger for an electric resistor having a shank adapted to be fitted within said recess and an outwardly projecting stem having a plurality of flanges.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of December, 1920.
