UNITED STATES PATENT Grrrcn.
GEORGE W. LEWIS, OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND (3. W. WALKER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRINGS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,085, dated September 23, 1873 application filed May 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LEWIS, of Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Spring, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in the improvement of vehicle-springs, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved spring. Fig. 2 is a cross'section of the spring on the line 00 0c, and Fig. 3 is a top view of one of the plates, showing the rib at the middle of the upper side.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the lower division, and B the upper one. They are, in this example, composed of four leaves each, but they may have more or less, as preferred. The two long leaves a and b are bent upward and backward at the ends, in the manner shown, to confine the ends of the leaves 6 and f of the upper division. It will be seen that as the lower division supports at its ends the ends of the upper division the elongation of the latter, by the weight or by springing down, will cause its ends to bear against the leaf 1) at g and h, and their elongation. will be thereby arrested 5 and a reaction of the middle portion of the upper division will take place, which will bring the power of the spring largely into action. The two divisions are separated by a considerable space by the metal or wood block D confined betweeen them in the yoke E, which also tends to utilize the power of the springs. F represents the ribs raised in the upper surface of each leaf, at the center, by indenting the under surface, which ribs are nested with the indentations, as shown; and the block I) and yoke are similarly arranged, so that the plates are not only considerably stiffened, but they are very firmly secured together by the ribs and indentations.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The two springs A B, the long sectionsof the latter held by the backwardly-curved ends of sections a b of the former, in the manner described.
2. The yoke E and median block D, combined with spring-sections having the corrugations F, as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE W. LEWIS.
