DRY-KILN TRUCK.
Application filed October 6, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, HERBERT B. GILLETTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Dry-Kiln Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dry kiln trucks. I
The object of the invention is to provide a strong, light and effective dry kiln truck fabricated, with the exception ofthe axles and the roller bearings, from sheet metal.
Objects which pertain to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A. structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. I is a side elevation view if my i1nproved truck, stood on end.
Fig. TI is an inverted plan view of the same.
Fig. III is an enlarged detail perspective View of one end of the truck body.
Fig. IV is an enlarged detail end view of a portion of the truck turned bottom upwards, a part of the frame being broken away to show details of the yoke construction.
Fig. V is an enlarged detail inverted plan view of a portion of the truck showing one wheel and carrying yoke.
Fig. VI is a detail transverse sectional elevation View taken on line 6-6 of Fig. V, looking in the direction of the little arrows.
In the drawing similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, 1 is the truck body formed of sheet metal. The top 2 is flat and the sides 3-3 are vertical, terminating in inturned sup porting and stiflening ribs 3 at the bottom. The ends are formed as seen in detail, particularly in Fig. III, by splitting back the corners between the sides and the top a short distance, folding the ends of the side 3 to right angle positions at 4-4:, and folding Serial No. 505,789.
the end 5 of the top portion 2 down over the same and electric welding or otherwise securing the overlapped portions together to form the box like end of the truck body.
The center of the body is provided with one or more cross braces 6 (see Fig. IT) to hold the same in place. The yoke 7 is made in the preferred form of an integral sheet of metal having a flat top portion 8, vertical sides 9, 9 connected thereto by oblique portions 10, 10, the ends 11, 11 of the sides being formed by extended portion bent at right angles thereto to contact with the sides 3, 3 of the body.
The wheel comprises a sheet metal hub 14:, in the ends of which are disposed washers 15 having extension ears 16, each engaging in a notch in the end of the hub. Bearing rollers 17 are interposed between the hub let and the axle 12. The sides of the wheel are sheet metal disks 18, the peripheries of which extend to form flanges 19. The tubular body of the wheel 20 is disposed be tween these disks 18 and secured in place by electric welding, (either inside or outside) or otherwise, at 21. The sides 18 are welded to the hub or expanded into the hub as well, and the various parts are welded together as required, including the welding of the yoke and body.
Having thus described my invention what T claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a truck body of suitably conformed sheet metal having a flat top top and vertical sides, a yoke portion of sheet metal with a flat top portion, vertical sides with end extensions disposed at an angle and transverse to the body of the truck, an axle disposed in said yoke with its ends embraced by the sides of the body, a pin through the said yoke and axle to retain the same in place, a wheel carried by said axle embraced by said yoke, roller bearings interposed between the hub of said wheel and said axle, 'etaining washers suitably locked in the ends of said hub and disposed between the vertical portions of the yoke, as specified.
2. The combination of a truck body of suitably conformed sheet metal having a flat top and vertical sides, a yoke portion of sheet metal with a fiat top portion, vertical sides with end extensions disposed at an angle and transverse to the body of the truck, an axle disposed in said yoke with its ends embraced by the sides of the body, a pin through the said yoke and axle to re tain the same in place, and a wheel carried by said axle embraced by said yoke, as specified.
3. The combination of a truck body with suitable top and side walls, a yoke disposed Within the same with vertical sides spaced from the side Walls of the body, an axle-disposed in said yoke and embraced by the said side walls, a wheel on the said axle, and retaining washers suitably locked in the ends of said hub and disposed between the vertical portions of the yoke, as specified.
i. The combination of a truck body with suitable top and side walls, a yoke disposed within the same with vertical sides spaced from the side Walls of the body, an axle disposed in said yoke and embraced by the said side walls, and a wheel on the said axle, as specified.
5. The combination of a truck body formed of sheet metal with flat top and vertical sides and upturned beaded edges, a yoke of sheet metal with flat top and vertical sides spaced from the sides of said truck body, with lateral extensions turned at an angle and contacting With the inner side of said truck body and engaging above the said beaded edge, coacting as specified.
6. The combination of a truck body formed of sheet metal with fiat top and VGIF tical sides, of a yoke disposed within the said body, an axle carried by the said yoke, the ends of which are disposed in proximity to the sides of said body, coacting as specified.
7. The combination of a truck body of sheet metal having a fiat top and vertical sides, an axle disposed between the sides of said body With the ends embraced by said sides, supporting means for the said axle within the said body in spaced relation to the sides thereof, as specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
