Description
o. I. SIIIIGEII.v
TRAVELERS HAND BAG 0R SATCHEL).
APPLICATION FILED IIov. I8. 1921.
Patented Oct. 3, 1922..
OSCAR I. SINGER, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TU SNGER BROS. @s COMPANY, Qi
COPARTNERSEI?.
TRAVELERS HAND BAG OR SATGHEL Application led November 18, 1921.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I. Osez/in l. SINGER, a citizen of the United States7 residing at. Chicagov1 in the county of Cook and State ot Illinois, have invented certain new and use'lul improvements in Travelers Hand Bags or Satchels, of which the following is a specification.
'.lhis invention relates to improvements in travelers hand bag or satchel, and one oi? the objects of the same is to provide an improved bag ot this character having means whereby shirts or other articles may be held within and against the side ot the bag whereby they may not only be protected and kept separate from the remaining articles within the bag, but will be capable ot being freely removed withoutdisarranging the remaining contents of the bag.
A further object is to provide an improved bag of this character' having therein a tiap or partition hingedly or toldably connected with the bag at the lower edge oi the partition or flap, the upper' edge oit the partition or flap being secured to the bag by suitable fastening devices, and the ends ot the partition or Hap being cut out or shaped so as to receive the folding in ends ot the bag when the bag is closed7 thereby preventing injury to the partition or tlap.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially thc construction, combination and arrange ment of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating` this invention and in which- Figure l is alongitudinal vertical sectional view of a hand bag or Satchel having this improvement applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional viewV on line 2 2, Figure l.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the partition or flap detached from the bag.
Figure et is a detail section view on line i, Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral l() designates generally a hand bag or satchel of the usual construction. The numeral l1 designates one ot the frame members at the top of the bag and which members are pivotally connected at their inner ends. The upper portions 12 ot Serial No. 516,085.
the ends i3 of the bag are adapted to be folded inwardly as shown in Figure l, when the trame members ll are closed and when the trame members lll are open the folded-in portions lf2 will assume uprigl'it positions and the tramo members ll may be held open in the ordinary and usual inanner.
iVithin the bag is arranged a partition or iap designated generally by the reference numeral la which may be constructed of any suitable material. rllhe iiap or partition la is connected as at i5 adjacent the bottom oil one ot the side walls 1G01- the bag and `may be secured in any suitable manner such as by means of stitching or otherwise.
The flap 11i is preferably oft a size substantially co-eiztensive with the side i6 of the bag or satchel7 preferably both in length and height and is adapted to stand to one side oi the intolding portions ot the ends oit the bag and close to the adjacent wall. The upper portions oi the ends olf? the flap or partition "i4 are cut away or shaped as at 17 so as to receive the infolding portions l2 oi' the ends 13 ott the bag when the .latter is closed and when the iiap is spaced from the side Iot the bag so that the flap or partition will not be injured by the intolding ends and will not obstruct or prevent the fold ing in of these ends.
The flap or partition ldis preferably provided with a hand hold 18 arranged alongI its upper edge and it desired5 the edges ot the partition or Hap maybe pro vided 'with a suitable re-entorcing band or binding 19, although this band or binding is not necessary. y
The flap or partition is adapted stand uprightly adjacent the side walis 16 oi" the bag so that articles, such as shirts or the like may be placed between the partition and the wall `16 to keep them separated. from the remaining articles in the bag and also to holdthein in a position against the side of the bag.
Any suitable means maybe provided for holding the flap or partition in position such as fastening straps or tabs 2O which may be connected in any suitable manner with the frame ll and which carry adjacent one end thereoi one member Q1 oi" a separable fastcning device such as a snap. The other member 29. of the fastening device being carried by the flap or partition 14,. lt
fil
desired additional members or buttons 23 may be carried by the partition 14 and with Which button the fastening device 21 is adapted to co-operate.
It will be seen that by detaching these straps or tabs 20 the partition 141C may be shifted by means of the hand hold 18 so as to permit the articles to be placed therebehind and when the articles are in position the partition may be held by means of the tabs or straps 20. It will be manifest that the cut out portions 1T of the partition will per init the partition tov assume' a position somewhat spaced from the Wall 16 of the bag and at the same time will not interfere withY the intolding portions Yl2 ot the' ends of the bag.
It desired pockets 24k may be provided on the outer tace of the partition or iapV 14 and also'i't desired additional infolding lap's 25 2G may be secured to the rear face of the partition or Yflap .ld so as to 'l'old over thel articles which may be placed against the inner tacev ot the partition'. T hese' laps 25-26 also serve as a means tor separating the articles which may be placed between the partition and the Wall 1G of the' bag.
Wheii it is not desired to' store article be'- hind the partition, the same may be held against the sidev 16 of the bag by engaging the fastening devices 21 with the buttons 23. l
Obviously any number of these buttons 23 may bel employed and the straps or tabs 2O may be of a suitable length to correspond with the buttons.
HiWhile the preferred form' of the invention has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made inl the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement ot the several parts, Within the scope of the claims, Without departing from the spirit of this invention.
lWhat is claimed as new is l. ln combination, a hand bag or Satchel, having intolding ends, a {i'ap Wit-hin' the bag and secured by one extremity adjacent the' bottom oit one side of the bag and being ot a height substantially equal' to the height oft said side and Co-operating therewith to torni" a storage space therebetween, said flap being also adapted to assume a position' to one side oi' the intolding portions of the ends and close to one side' of the bag, and means detachably securing the upper edge oi the flap adjacent the upper elge ot the said side ot the bag, the ends of the flap being shaped tor the reception of the intolding ends of the bag when the flap is spaced from the adjacent side of the bag.
2. In combination, a hand bag or satchel having infolding ends, a flap flexibly secured along' one edge adjacent the bottom of one side of the bag and adapted to cooperate with said side oft the bag to torm an article receiving space therebetween, said flap being also adapted to assume a position to one' side of the intolding portions of the ends and close to one side of the bag and means ior detachably securing the upper edge ot the flap tothe saidside ot the bag, the said `flapr being substantially (fo-*extensive with the said side, the ends of the flap being cutout or shaped. to receive' the intolding ends oi'i the bag WhenY the flap is spaced from the adjacent side of the bag. l
ln combination, a hand bag or satchel having intolding ends, a flap `flexibly secured Within an'd along one edge adjacent the' bottom ot one side ot the bag, said 'flap adapted to co-opera'te with said side ot the bag to'v forman article receiving space therebetween and adapted to assume a position to one side or' the intolding' portions ot the ends of the bag, the flap being shaped so not to interfere With the intoldling ends whenv the iiap is spaced from the adjacent side of the bag, means for detachably securing the upper edge of the flap to the said side ot the bag, and one or more pockets carried by thev outer tace oit the flap.
In combination, a hand bag or satchel having infolding ends, a iap' flexibly secured within and along one edge adjacent the bottom ot' one side oi' the bag, said tlap adapted toA co-operate With said side ot the bag to torm an article receiving space therebetween and being also adaptedl to assume a position to one side oi' the intolding portions oi' the ends oi' the bag, the ends oft the flap being shaped so as not to interfere with the ii'itolding ends oi the bag when the flap is spaced troni the adjacent side ot the bag, means for deta'chably securing the upper edge ot the 'liap to the said side oit' the bag, and one or more supplemental liaps carried by the first recited Vflap and toldable between the first said flap and the adjacent side of the' bag.
In testimony whereof :I have signed my naine tol this specification, on' this 14th day of November, A. D. 1921.
