METAL FRAMING OR- END REENFORCEMENT FOR RAILWAY CARS.

Be, it known that I, GARTH G. GILPIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Framing or End Reenforcement for Railway Cars, of
I which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction or repair of railway cars, especially box freight cars, and a primary object of the invention is to provide a; reenforcement or framing for the end wall of a car of wood construction consisting of a metal structure composed of a single integral casting or of castings and rolled sections rigidly united together, the members of -which structure are so formed and disposed as to give maximumstrength and rigidity to the end wall of the car both as against cargo thrusts and also against weaving, or like strains, with a minimum weight of metal. The invention may be employed either in the repair of old cars or in new equipment and is applicable, with certain constructional modifications, ether tosingle sheathed or -double sheathed cars.
The invention is illustrated, in certain preferred embodiments, in the accompanying drawings, in which Fg. 1 is an end elevation of the superstructure of a railway box car of the single sheathed type provided with the framing or reenforcement of my invention.

Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 25 designates the end sheathing boards of a single sheathed car, 26 the side sheathing boards, 27 the flooring and 28 the draft sills, which are shown as connected at their extremities to a striking casting29 and united together by a cover plate v8O.
The end framing employed in this construction consists of a single cast structure comprising an upper transverse member 31 which constitutes, ineifect, the end plate of the car and is provided preferably with an inturned rigidifying flange 32 which supports the roof strurture 34 of the 'car, a lower transverse member 85 which with an angle bar 36 constitutes, in effect, the end sill of the car. an intermediate transverse member 37, upright side or corner members 38, 38 V and intermediate members 39, 89. The lower transverse member 35 is preferably formed with downwardly projecting extensions 40 formed with push pole pockets 41. The upright side members 88 are formed with flanges 42 which overlap the side sheathing hoards 26 which are scored thereto. The intermediate upright members 39 arepreferably channel-shaped in cross section and project out beyond the plane of the upright side members. the channe s being of uniform depth or thikness from the floor to points approximately half way between the floor and roof and tapering in depth or thi'kness from here on toward their upper extremities. The intermediate transverse member 37 is also preferably channel-shaped in cross section and extends out beyond the plane of the upright side members with its extremities tapering in depth toward said side members. The framing structure shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 instead of being composed of a single integral casting is made up of separately formed members, some of which are commercial rolled sections, suitably-riveted or bolted together. The structure.-comprisesan upper transverse member l7 preferably acasting and formed with an 'inturned flange 48 for supporting the roof of the car, a lower transverse member 49, also acasting, preferably, having an intur'ned flange 50 secured to the strikingcasting29 and other portions of the under frameiupright side members 51, 51, which are angle bars, andupright intermediate members 52 areZ-shaped in cross section. The lower transverse member a9 is formed at its extremities with enlargements 53 for the push pole pockets 5st and to provide extended bearings for the lower ends'of the angle bar side members 51which are se cured thereto by rivets 55,,the angle bars 51 preferably extending down to, the "lower corners. of these enlargements. The upper transverse member .47 is provided with similar wings or enlargements 56 to which the upper ends of the angle bars 51 are secured. The intern'iediatc members 52 are riveted, through their outstanding vebs 57, to angular brackets58 formed on the transverse members. The outstanding flanges of the brackets are extended out over the faces the Z-bars 52.

In Figs. 8, 9 and 10 I have shown an integral cast reenforcement for the end wall of a double sheathed boX'ca-r of wood construction. The end structure of the car as here shown, comprises an end plate 65, an end' sill 66, sheathing boards 67, lining boards 68, corner posts 69, intermediate posts 70, side sills 71 and side plates 72.
The end reenforcement comprises an up per transverse member 73, a lower transverse member 7 4, upright side members 75, 75 and upright intermediate members 76, 7 6 which are preferably in line with the intermediate wooden end posts 7 O. 70. The side members 75 are formed with flanges 77 which overlap the side walls of the car and are extended to form wings 78 and 79 at their upper and lower ends, these wings being secured to the side plates 72 and the side sills 71, respectively. Additional enlargements or wings 80 are provided for engagement with the,
side belt rails 81 of the car. The lower transverse member 7 4: is formed preferably with an inturned flange 82 which extends under the end sill 66 and is widened at its extremities to underlie the ends of the side sillsas shown at 8.3. The striking casting 84;
is preferably formed integrally with the lower transverse member 74 although it might be made separately therefrom if detoward the sides of the car. At the junction of the side members 75 with the upper transverse member 7 3 strengthening ribs 86 are provided which extend around the corners of the car. The intermediate upright members 76 are in the form of I-beams as shown particularly at the righthand'side of Fig.
8. These I-beam structures taper down and die out upon the lower transverse member 7 4 as shown at 87 in Fig. 10. The outer flanges 88 thereof are continuous with the outstand ing web 85 of the upper transverse member 7 3. l have shown theibrake staff 89 as extending through a perforation in web 85. In order to fasten the wooden intermediate posts 70 to the upright members 76 ofthe end reenforcementthe outstanding webs 90 of the intermediate upright members are formed at intervals with bosses 91- perforated to receive bolts 92 which pass through the bosses and through posts 70.
The construction shown in Figs. 11, 12 and 13 issubstantially the same as that shown inFigs. 8, 9 andlO except that the men forcing structure of Figs. 11 and 12 is'provided with an intermediate transverse reenforcement 93 which is aligned with the end belt rail 94 and like the upright intermediate members 95 is I-shaped in cross section. The transverse intermediate member 93 tapers in depth or thickness at each end from the upright intermediate member to the side member 96. The rest of the structure may be like that shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10. I
I claim:
1. A metal reenforcement or framing adapted to be fitted over the end wall of a railway box car comprising cast transverse members at the roof and floor of the car, upright members at the sides of the car provided with flanges which overlap and are attached to the sidewalls thereof, and up right members extending from one transverse member to the other intermediate the sides of the car, all united to form a unitary structure.
2. A metal reentorcement or training for the end wall of a railway box car comprising cast transverse members at the roof and floor of the car, upright members at the sides of the car provided with flanges overlapping the side walls thereof, and upright members extending from one transverse member to the other iiitermediate the sides of the car the lower portions of which are of greatest crosssectional area and the upper portions of which diminish in cross-sectional area toward their upper extremities.
' 3. A metal reenforcement or framing adapted to be fitted over the end wall of a railway box car comprising cast transverse members at the roof and floor of the car, upright members at the sides of the car provided with flanges overlapping the side walls thereof, and upright members extending from one transverse member to the other intermediate the sides of the car which are angular in their cross section and project out beyond the plane of said upright side members.
4. A metal reenforcement or framing adaptedto be fitted over the end wall of a railway box car comprising transverse members at the root and floor of the car, upright members at the sides of the car provided with flanges overlapping the side walls thereof, and uprightmembers extending from one transverse member to the other intermediate the sides of the car, said structure consisting of a single integral casting.
5. A metal reenforcement or framing for the end wall of a railway box car compris ing transverse members at the roof and floor of the car, upright members at the sides of the car provided with flanges overlapping the sidewalls thereof, upright members extending from one transverse member to the other intermediate the sides of the car, and a transverse member intermediate the upper and lower transverse members extending from side to side of the car and tapering from a point adjacent the vertical center line of the end to its extremities, said structure consisting of a single integral casting.
6. A metal reenforcement or framing adapted to be fitted over the end wall of a railway box oar comprising transverse members at the roofand floor of the car, upright angular side members integral with the transverse members, and upright mem bers integral with and extending from one transverse member to the other intermediate the side members and projecting out beyond the same.
7. A metal reentorcement or framing for the end wall of a railway box car comprising transverse members at the roof and floor of the car, upright angular side members integral with the transverse members and upright members integral with and extending from one transverse member to the other intermediate the side members and projecting out beyond the same, said intermediate upright members being of greater cross sectional area adjacent the horizontal center line of the end than at their upper extremities.
8. A metal ,reenforcement or framing adapted to be fitted over the end wall of a railway box car comprising transverse members at the roof and floor of .the car, upright angular side members integral with the transverse members, upright members integral with and extending from one transverse member to the other intermediate the side members, and an intermediate trans- 100 verse member integral with said side and infrom one transverse member to the other intermediate the side members, and an intermediate transverse member integral with said side and intermediate upright members, said intermediate upright and transverse members projecting beyond the plane of the upper, lower and side members.
10. A metal reenforcement or framing for the end wall of a railway box car com prising transverse members at the roof and floor of the car, upright angular side members integral with the transverse members, upright members the upper ends 01'' which taper in thickness toward the roof and which are integral with and extend from one transverse member to the other intermediate the side members, and an intermediate transverse member integral with said side and intermediate upright members, said intermediate transverse members projecting beyond the plane of the upper, lower and side members, and being of greater thickness longitudinally of the car at their middles and tapering in thickness toward their extremities. y
11. In a singlesheathed box car, a metal reenforcement or training comprising an upper transverse member providing a roof support, a lower transverse member providing an end sill, upright intermediate members formed with channels open onv the side toward the car, and filler strips in said ohannelsto which the sheathing boardsof the end may be secured.
12. In a single sheathed box car, a metal reenforcement or framing comprising an upper transverse member providing a support for the roof structure, a lower transverse member providing an. end sill, upright intermediate members and a transverse intermediate member formed with channels open on the side toward the car; and filler strips in certain of said channels to which the sheathing boards of the car end may be secured. 1
13. In a single sheathed box car, a metal reenforcement or framing adapted to fit over the end wall of the car comprising anupper transverse-member, a lower transverse member, upright intermediate members, and a transverse intermediate member, said intermediate members being channel-shaped in cross sectlon.
