I Application filed September B certain Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct the hub of a fan in such a manner that the blades can be secured to the fan so that the fan can be used as a right or a left hand fan. The invention is especially adapted for use in connection With-circulating fans of driers, when it is desired-to have some of the fans right'hand and others left hand, although it will be understood that the invention can be used in the general construction of fans.
In the accompanying drawings: Fig. l is a side view of a fan hub, showing the blades in dotted lines; and.
i Fig. 2 is a face view, showing the hub in full lines and the blades in dotted lines.
l-is the-hub. 2 are the blades, which are secured to the hub. In the present instance, there aresix blades and the hub has twelve surfaces to which the blades can be attached. The surfaces 3 are arranged at one angle and thesurfaces 4 are arranged at an opposite angle. The surfaces 3 alternate with the 80 surfaces 4., as shown. These surfaces, or sections, project from the extended 'hub proper 5, which has set screws, in" the present instance, by which it is secured to a shaft. The hub has a key-way 7 so that. it can be keyed 85 to the shaft. In the drawings, the
secured to the surfaces, or sections, of the blades 2 are shown 26, 1e21. Serial No. 503,165.
hub.. They may be. secured by means of bolts, rivets, or other fa stenin'gsp When the shaft is turned in one direction, the blades forqe the air forward, but, when the shaft is reversed',-the blades withdraw the air in the'opposite direction. By looking the blades on the sections 4 instead of the'sections 3', the shaft can be-reversed and the air will flow in the same direction asv hereinbe fore described. The details of theconstruction ofthe hub of the fan may be altered without departing from the essential features 'of'the invention. The hub may be made of cast or of. wrought metal, as desired. While a six-bladed fan is shown, the number of blades may bevaried without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. The combination in a fan, of'a hub; a series of blades, the hub having two series of radiating surfaces, one series alternating .With the other, and one arranged'at an angle to, the other; and-.means vforsecuring the blades to either'of said sets of surfaces.
2. The combination in a fan, of a hub sectionhaving a hub proper arranged tobe secured to a shaft,-said hub section having a series-of radiating surfaces, one surface being at an angle to the other, said surfaces al terna'ting with each other; a series of blades arranged to be secured to one series of sur-' faces; and means for securing said blades tosaid'surfaces, the'whole being so arranged 70 that the fan can be used as a right ora left hand fan.
