Description

N. NILSON. WATER HEATER.

WATER HEATER.
Application filed March 23 To all to 710m it may concern Be it known that I, NILs 'NILsoN, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Vfater Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to water heaters, and has for its object to provide means for heating water in a separate boiler for use in a kitchen, bath room or other room somewhat remote from the furnace or heating, plant and which is in connection with the main boiler of the plant.
This object I accomplish with the appara tus illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, and as described in the specification forming a part of this application and point ed out in the appended claims. In the drawings in which i have shown a substantial embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical section on line 1-1 Figure 2. Figure 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a similar section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
I construct the fire box 1 on one side of a chamber 3, and the flue at on the opposite side of said chamber. Above the fire box 1 is the main boiler 2, and adjacent the flue 4c is placed the auxiliary boiler 13. A direct connection is made from the fire box 1 to the lower portion of the flue 1 through the opening 5, and which connection is in communication with the lower portion of the chamber 3; and another opening 6 connects the upper portion of said chamber 3 with the said flue. Dampers 7 and 8 are provided in the respective openings 5 and 6. The bottom of said chamber 3 is made of a cast iron flat manifold 9 having internal walls 11 to form a horizontally disposed zigzig conduit or canal 10, one end of which is connected with the auxiliary boiler 13 by the pipe 12, and the other end is connected with a spiral pipe 14 which is in communication with the upper portion of the main boiler 13 through the pipe 15. The pipe 17 conveys the hot water to the desired place of use while the pipe 16 connects the water supply to the boiler 13, and in which last mentioned pipe a cut ofi take the shortest route to the flue.
Serial No. 454,706.
valve is provided. The heat passes through the said chamber 3 as directed by the dampers 7 and 8, and when the fire is first started the damper 8 is closed and the damper 7 is opened in order that the smoke and heat may When the fire is well started the damper 7 is closed and the damper 8 is opened so that the heat will fill the chamber 3 and around the spiral convolutions of pipe 14:, thereby-insuring hot water in both boilers. I thus provide new and novel means for heating water consisting of the enclosed chamber 3 with the zigzag water-coursed jacket 9 at its bottom and the enclosed spiral pipe 1 1 therein positioned between the two boilers and connected with the fire box.
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1. In a water heater, the combination with a main boiler, of an auxiliary boiler comprising a tank, a pipe opening into said tank, and provided with convolutions, a manifold having a zig-zag passage connected to said pipe and communicating with said tank, and a chamber, of which said manifold forms the bottom, said chamber enclosing said pipe and being arranged to receive the flue gases from said main boiler.
2. A water heater comprising a fire box having a flue therefor, a container, a pipe connected with said container and provided with convolutions, a manifold communicatinp both with said-container and said pipe, a heating chamber inserted between the fire box and the'fiue, and enclosing said pipe, said manifold constituting the bottom of said chamber.
3. in combination with a main heating system including a fire box and a flue there for, of an independent water circulating system, comprising a container connected with a water supply, a manifold connected with one end of said container, a pipe connecting saidmanifold with the other end of the container and providing a circuitous water passage, a heating chamber inserted between said fire box and said flue, and enclosing said pipe, said manifold constituting the bottom of said chamber.
1. In combination with a main heating system including a fire b9? and a flue theres for, of an independent rater circulating system, comprising a container connected with a Water supply, a manifold connected with one end of said container, a pipe conneeting said manifold With the other end of the container and providing a circuitous Water passage, a heating chamber inserted between said fire box and said flue, and enclosing said pipe said manifold constituting the bottom of said chamber and dampers 10 inserted between said chamber and said flue. In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
NILS NELSON.
