UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. C
JAMES H. WARING', 0F
PENCIL.
Application led February 28, 1921. Serial No. 448,318.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES H. VVARING, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Pencils; and I do hereby declare that the followin is a full, clear, and exact description t ereof.
My invention relates to improvements in pencils, and more particularly to that type adapted to be refilled.
The invention has for its object to provide a pencil of this type which is durable, eiiicient and positive in operation.
A. more specific object resides in the arrangement of lead feeding and holding means, whereby the lead is firmly engaged and projected from the pencil and positively held in its projected position to the extent that retraction of the lead is impossible, without damage thereto. 4
Another object lies in the prpvision of encased operating means whereby the lead is prevented from being accidentally projected from the pencil.
A still further object is to provide a pencil of this type. with ball friction clutches for engaging the lead whereby a positive grip can be obtained and at the same time prevent damage to the lead.
With these and other objects in view which will be apparent as the description proceeds, my -invention consists in what is hereinafter more particularly defined and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the invention, with parts broken away and in section to more clearly illustrate the novel points of construction, and
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view through the lead projecting clutch, taken on 'the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanylng drawing, the numeral 1 designates an outer casing provided with a tapered end 2 having fitted therein byA any suitable method, a leadguide 3, provided with a central recess to permit the lead L to pass therethrough. Disposed within the casm 1 adjacent its tapered end 2 is a clutcg housing 4f, providedqwith. inwardly MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 PAUL F. SCHRYER, OF WAUWATOSA, WISCONSIN.
HEISSUED turned flanges 5 adapted to retain a pair of ball clutches C and C which respectively project and hold the lead against retraction.
The clutch C comprises an .annular ring 6 slidable within the housing 4 and provided with a tapered ball engaging surface, and a central opening 7 which permits the ring to be mounted upon the end of a leady housing 8. Surrounding the lead and disposed within the annular` ring 6, are a plurality ofv ripping balls B, which are retained in t ieir place by a ball retainer 9.'
The clutch C which opposes the clutch C to prevent retraction of the lead, is similarly constructed and disposed between its annular ring and the ball retainer 9 of clutch C, is a spring 10 adapted to render both clutches operative, and having an additional function. of returning the clutch C to its normal position after the lead has ,been projected. rlhe ball retainer 9 of the clutch C is provided with a recess 9 to receive the lead guide 3.
The open end of the casing l is provided with a collar 11, having a central orice to permit the lead housing 8 to extend therethrough. Fitted over the end of the casing and abutting the annular flange 1 is a sleeve 12 provided with an enlarged end 13, which lend is turned inwardly to provide a retaining bead 14. Confined within the enlarged end 13 is a cap 15 adapted to engage and operate the lead housing 8, the cap having its movement limited in one direction by the bead 14 and in the opposite direction by the' shoulder 16 formed between the sleeve and the enlarged end 13.
From the foregoing it will be seen that as the cap is depressed, the clutch C mounted on the end of the housing 8, will grap and projectthe lead from the guide 3. Upon releasin the cap the spring 10 will cause the clutch to be returned to its normal position, and at the same time will render the clutch C operative upon any tendency of the lead to be retracted by the clutch C upon its return movement. It will further be noted that when the clutch C is in its normal position, the clutch C will cooperate with it to assist in preventing the lead from bein pushed back when pencil is in use.
Wile I have shown and described one specific method of carrying out my present "ies invention it will he understood that various changes in minor details of construction are masones surfaces, a group of balls, a ballretainer, a second ring, a second group of balls, said ring having ball engaging surfaces, a sprinor contacting with said second ring and sai retainer, a second ball retainer, a lead guide rigid therewith, a housing for said spring, said rings, said balls, and said retainers limiting the movemento said irst mentioned ring, and a casing enveloping said lead housing, said second mentioned housing and said lead guide.
- In testimony that claim the foregoing have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lWisconsin. JAMES H. WARING.
