FASTENING DEVICE FOR DETACHAIBLE SHOE HEELS.

The object of the invention is to so con-- struct a heel, forboots and shoes that a portion of said heel, )referably constructed of rubber. may be easily and quickly detached from the permanent portion of said heelin order that said detachable portion may bev replaced when worn without the use of nails and tools. a v
Still another object of the invention is to provide a novel means for preventing the detachable heel from rotating upon the permanent portion of the heel. I
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section through the heel portion of a shoe, the heel embodying my invention being illustrated attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the spring clip.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 represents a portion of the upper of a shoe, 6 the sole and 7 the heel seat. Secured to the heel seat 7 in any suitable manner as, for example,by nails 8 is a lift 9 preferably constructed of leather. A metal plate 10 is secured to the under surface of the lift 9 by means of nails 11. Formed intergral with the plate 10 is a downwardly projecting member 12 which is approximately conical in form and is provided with a spirally arranged screw-- thread 13 extending therearound, said screwthread increasing in diameter from the lower end of said member upwards.
A lift 14 preferably constructed of resilient material as, for example, rubber or a material embodying the properties of rubber, is secured to the lift 9 by means of the member 12. The upper surface of the lift 14 is concaved at 15 in order that the upper edge of the lift 14 may closely fit the lift 9 when the lift 14 isattached thereto/Thelift is provided with a recess 16 in the upper sur face thereof, said recess being approximately conical in form and having a spirally arranged screw-thread 17 extending therearound which is adaptedto fit and interlock with a screw-thread 13 upon the member 12.
, The pitch of the screw-thread is such that one half a turn of the lift 14 upon the menu ber 12 is sufficient to securely interlock said lift" 14 with the member 12 and draw the curved surface 15 tightly into contact with the under-surface of the lift .9. v
i hen. in position the lift 14 is prevented from rotating upon-the member 12-by means of a spring clip 18. The clip18 is embedded in the lift 14 and is providedwith longitudinally extending grooves upon the outer surface thereof which prevent the-clip from rotating. within. the lift-.14.; The clip is furthermore provided with an interiorly screw-threaded portion 20 which prevents the clip from being pulled outwardly'from the lift 14. The clip 18 is also provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending slots 21 which form resilient fingers 22 adapted to be sprung into engagement with a projection 23 formed integral with the metal plate 10. A. shallow recess 24 is provided upon the inner surface of the fingers 22 and when the lift 14 is in position, a projection 23 which is partly spherical in form is located in the recess 24.
In attaching the detachable lift 14 tothe permanent lift 9 the lift 14 is held with the front edge thereof facing toward the rear of the shoe and then brought into engagement with the metal member 12, each thread of the lift 14 engaging the corresponding thread of the member 12. The lift 14 is then given one-half a turn which is suflicient to tightly interlock each succeeding thread and draw the curved surface 15 of the detachable lift 14 into engagement with the undersurface of the permanent lift 9. During this operation the front portion of the lift 14 is sprung downwardly to avoid the projection 23, but when the lift 14 has been rotated to a position where the spring clip 18 is in alignment with the projection 23, the front a 14 with a new lift, it is simply necessary to force the forward portion of the lift l-l downwardly to disengage the spring clip 18 from the projection 23 and then rotate the lift 14 one-half a turn in the proper direction to disengage said lift from the member 12.
The great advantage derived in construcing a heel as illustrated is that it allows all of the screw-threads to interlock with only one-halfof a turn of the detachable lift, and nocement or nails are necessary in se curing the detachable lift to the permanent lift and no tools are required in either applying or detaching the detachable lift.
It is evident that the permanent lift 9 may be eliminated if it is so desired and the lift 14. attached directly to the heel seat 7 without departing from the spirit of this invention. At this time the plate 10 is nailed directly to the heel seat and the detachable lift 14 is attached to the member 12 in the same manner as previously described. The detachable lift in such cases, aside from be ing slightly increased in thickness, is identical with the detachable lift 14 previously described.
I claim: 7
1. In combination, a plate provided with aprojection formed integral therewith, and a spring clip and embodying therein a plurality of resilient fingers adapted to spring into engagement with said projection upon said plate, said clip being provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves upon the outer surface thereof, said clip also being provided with a plurality of screw-threads upon the interior thereof.
2. In combination, a member, a spring clip embodying therein a plurality of re silient fingers, said clip being provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves upon the outer surface thereof adapted to co-operate with the material of said member to prevent the rotation of said clip therein, said clip also being provided with a plurality of screw-threads upon the interior thereof adapted to co-operate with the material of said member to prevent a longitudinal movement of said clip within said heel.
