Be it known that l, Amen R. Fninnne, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Apploton in the county of ()utagainie and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Neck Yokes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in neck yokes and more particularly to those of relatively small size adapted for detachable connection to the ends of the larger neck yoke which is connected with the tongue, so as to equally distribute the weight upon the hames of the team. Numerous de vices have been provided for detachably connecting the smaller yokes with the usual neck yoke, but most of these devices, while preventing accidental release of the yokes, have been very difficult to release when the yokes must be disconnected, often requiring that the teamster remove his gloves or mittens, which is very undesirable in cold weather.

The object of my invention is to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive, yet a highly eflicient and desirable arrangement of parts for preventing accidental release of the supplemental yokes from the main yoke, regardless of the position to which the supplemental yokes are moved, novel provision being made, however, whereby the latch device may be quickly and easily released. when necessary.

With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a plan view partly in hori- :contal section. showing a neck yoke embodying my improvements.

Figure 3 is a sectional view as indicated by line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a neck yoke which preferably is constructed from wood, the ends of said yoke being provided with rings or the like 2, while its central portion is equipped with a hook 3, for co-action with one of the usual neck yoke rings on the larger yoke which is carried by the tongue.

Serial N ta/ma The shank of the hook 3 is provided with a slot i and the bill 5 of said hook is turned inwardly toward one end portion of the yoke, being terminated in spaced relation with the latter as shown clearly in Figure 1. lVhile any suitable means may be employed for securing the hook 3 to the yoke 1, I prefer to equip said hook with an integral ring 6 surrounding said yoke and held against turning thereon by a screw or the like 7.

A resilient latch rod 8 is secured at one end to the oke 1, preferably by bending one end of said rod laterally to form a prong 9 and driving said prong into the yokeas'disclosed in Figure 1. The rod 8 passes through theslot 4 and across the end of the bill 5, the free end of said rod being shaped to form an appropriate handle 10 by means of which the rod may be moved inwardly to the dotted line position shown in Figure 1 whenever it is necessary to release the hook 3 from the ring with. which it co acts.

From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided an extremely simple and inexpensive device which may be expeditiously manufactured and which will be highly efiicient and desirable in use. Particular attention is directed to the fact that the latch rod 8 cannot become accidentally released, no matter to what position the yoke 1 is moved. Furthermore. this rod may be easily released when necessary without requiring that the teamster remove his gloves or mittens.

Since excellent results have been obtained from the details disclosed, they are preferably followed. ever. that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may be made. Furthermore. while I have disclosed my invention in connection with a neck yoke, it is to be understood that it is adaptable also to singletrees and the like, should such application be found desirable. Also, the spring 8 may be attached to the yoke in any suitable way.

I claim:
