CHARLES J. HOWE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PIVOT.
Application filed March 9, 1921. Serial 1\T o.'4=50,830.
To all roll-0m if 711((1/ concern":
Be it known. that l, CHAnLns J. Hows, a
citizen of the United States of America, re-
provide a pivot of this general character which will be simple in construction and readily formed from sheet metal by stamping operations. t
A further object is to provide means for adjusting the tension of thesprmg pawl member to suit varying conditions. I
WVith the above and other objects which will appear in the specification, my invention consists in the parts and combinations thereof or their equivalents as hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the spring pawl in place in the cup casing, which is usually attached to the movable member;
opposed ratchet member with which the spring pawl eo-operates;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the pivot member shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. at is an elevation of the exterior of the pivot member shown in Fig. 2;
F ig'. 5 is a vertical section on the llne VV of Fig. 4,; and,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modification. v
The pivot consists of two relatively movable members, one of which, for purposes of description, will be termed the fixed member, and the other, the movable member. The movable member consists of a cup shaped. element 10, preferably of sheet metal, having punched up at its'center a boss 11 having a central aperture to receive the pivot 12. At equal distances from this central aperture are three struck up lugs 13 arranged with confronting faces at substantially sixty degrees to each other, the three lugs acting as confining walls for a triangular spring pawl member 14. Secured to the outside of the cup shaped member 10 is a bracket element 15 which may consist of a casting secured to the "cup member 10 by rivets 16. The member 15 is provided with lugs 17 adapted for'attachment to the windshield or other member to be pivotally mounted.
The fixed member consists of a circular ratchet member. 18 provided with a series of depressions 19 at'equal distances from the center .of the plate. An angular bracket member 20 which may be cast or stamped fromv sheet metal is suitably secured to the ratchet member or plate 18 as by rivets 21. The pivot 12 extends centrally through the boss 11, the center ofthe plate 18 and'the bracket 20 and at its outer end receives a nut 22 'which may be locked in adjusted position by the cotter pin 23. The pawl member 14 is provided at each of its corners with bosses 241 which be formed by stamping up the metal and each ofthese bosses 24 en gages a depression 19. The member 1 1 being formed of a sheet of spring metal supported at its center by the boss 11 is free at its corners to yield sufliciently to allow the bosses 24 to ride out of the depressions 19 as the movable pivot member is rotated upon the pivot 12. The tension of the ratchet member 14 may be adjusted by tightening orv so that greater or less force will be required Fig. 2 is an elevation of the interlor of the to spring the bosses 2 1 out of the depressions 19. The bosses 24; being spaced around the 'circleof depressions 19 at three points metal terminal strips 26 are secured by rivets 27 to the plate 10, the flanges 25 and strips 26 taking the place of the member 15 with its flanges 17.
From the above description it will be apparent that there is provided a device of the character described,possessing the particular features of advantage before enumerated as desirable, but which obviously is susceptible of modification in its form, proportion, details of construction and arrangement of parts, without departure from the principle involved or sacrificing any of its advantages.
VVhile in order to comply with the statute, the invention has been described in language more or less specific as to structural features,
it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the-specific details shown, but that the means and construction herein disclosed comprise but two of many modes of putting the invention into effect, and'the invention is therefore claimed in any of the 'forms or modifications within the legitimate and valid scope of I l lpA pivot construction the appended claims.
comprising 4 a ratchet meinber having a series of (lepros sions therein at equal radial'distanc'es from the center and I a cooperatingtrial-igu-lar spring pawl having "elevated portions near each corner adapted to engage depressions 1n the ratchet member at points substantially equidistant from, each other, and means for adjusting the tension of thespring'pawl.
2. A pivot construction comprising alixed member consistingoi' a bracket and a ratchet mem'be'r rigidly secured thereto and having a series 'of depressions equally, spaced from awcent'er andarelatively movable member "com arisin a bracket ortion a cu) sha ed l a v p a l casingsecured'thereto and having a plu rality of lugs arranged upon, its inner face, a
