Application f led May 14.,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OAKLEY T. BROWN, a citizen of the, United States, residing at Merchant and Oswego Streets, Audubon, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Coal Feed for Gas Producers or Furnaces, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to cylinder feeds for the coal for gas producers and furnaces which are adapted to form'traps for the gas at the top of the producerand which at the same time intermittently feed measured quantities of coal at predetermined intervals.
The main purpose of my invention is to provide for free longitudinal expansion of the feed drum, maintaining the seal without requiring separate fixed sealing heads and cooling the adjacent casing.
A further purpose is to cool the auxiliary casing in proximity to the feed cylinder so as to prevent carbonization of the tar in the gases coming in contact with the casing and cylinder.
Further purposes will appear in the specification and in the claims.
I have preferred to illustrate my invention by but one form thereof, selecting therefor a form which has proved to be practical and highly efficient and which at the same time well illustrates the principles of my invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation, partly sectioned upon line 11 of Fig. 2, showing this preferred form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. 1 taken upon line 2-2 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
In the drawings similar numerals illustrate like parts.
The casing 1 is adapted to rest upon the top and close the opening of any gas producer or furnace which is to be supplied with coal. It is supplemental to the producer or furnace and is attached to it by means of the flange 2. a
The casing is provided with an upwardly facing cylindrical sealing surface 3' in the middle of which is a central filling opening 4, dividing the surface into two main sections or parts 5, 5 on opposite sides of the opening, between which connecting edges or rims 6 complete the seal. tent of the sealing surface, including the r1ms, 1s preferably less than 180 degrees permittmg insertion of the feed cylinder and facilitating radial expansion and vertical adjustment. i
The cylindrical sealing surface of the casmg s open-ended, as it is my purpose to provide the end seal by the ends of the cylinder and give the cylinder free axial expansion.
When bituminous coal is fed into a heated chamber, whether gas producer or furnace, there is an immediate distillation of the tar which, when distilled, comes in contact with the surrounding surfaces. If these surfaces be unduly heated, the tar is carbonized.
I water-cool the arcuate portions of the sealing face of the casing. This water-coolmg is intended primarily to reduce or re move the tendency to carbonization above, though it is beneficial also in protection against undue expansion of the parts.
The provision for water-cooling comprises water chambers 7, 7 and connections 8, 9, S, 9 to a source of water supply not shown, whereby water circulation may be had.
Above this casing I mount a sealing feed cylinder 10 whose external surface is shown as ribbed at intervals axially as at 11, and circumferentially at the ends as at 12 to seal with the surface of the casing.
The feed cylinder is closed at the ends by heads 13, 18 and is provided with the usual opening 14 to receive the coal and to dis charge it through the opening 4: in the casing. The usual scraper 15 for removal of excess charge is pivoted at 16.
The cylinder receives its supply of coal from a chute or storage device, such as 17, connecting at 18, with side guard walls 19, to prevent end spilling of the coal.
The shafts 20 are shown as integral with the head 13, but are reinforced by wrought iron or steel rods 21. These shafts are supported in boxes 22, which are vertically movable in housings 23 and are adjusted therein by screws 2 f, locked by nuts 25. Oil provision for the bearings is shown at 26.
Means for turning the cylinder are shown at opposite ends in a ratchet wheel 27, for normal operation by the usual latch not shown, at the left and a spoke wheel 28 at the right. The guard 29, limiting the effective vstroke of the latch, is pivoted about band and is shifted by arm It is secured in adjusted position by a nut 32, passing through slot 33 in sector 84%.
cause this will be the usual fuel supplied,
I desire to make clear that my invention it is applicable also for feedingw other fuels and material'sthan coal. In particular, the same advantages presented in the; feeding of coal in a gas producer, for example, would be present also in the feeding of coke and ore into a blast furnace and I contemplate the use'of my invention in a great variety of gas producers and, furnaces Wherever the functions to be performed would beneficial. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I I A 1'. In a feeder for gas p'roducers,,a feeding, drum, supports therefor, a casing. fitting. a part of the drumlsurface and having adischarge opening, and walls forming with the casing a water" cooling': chamber for the casing about'tl'ie opening, and between the drum and the producer.
a feeder for gas producers, a retary 'f'u'e'l' holder adapted to receive fuel at one oint its travel fie discharge it at, another point therein, means for rotating it about a horizontal axis, and walls forming a Water cooling chamber closely adjacent to the holder lylng' between it and the producer and having one of the walls engaged by the fuel during its traVel-.
