Be it known that I, JESSE M. SHAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Sand and Gravel Loader, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to devices for loading sand and gravel and other loose material, and particularly for loading such substances, in places where they are deposited by the action of water, uponconveyances for transportation. Its principal object isto rovide an inexpensive and efficient means for quickly loading deposits of gravel,-wherever found, on conveyances, such as are in common use, by power mechanism other than hand power; and it consists of the novel de vices hereinafter fully set forth and stated in the appended claims. v
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate like parts.
Referring thereto, Fig. l is a perspective view of the frame work and plan of the deg vice embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A B constitute the framework, and b b, the side walls of an inclined platform on which the mechanism is operated. The bottom of this platform, B, may be inclined at any desired angle to accommodate the elevation-of the gravel by vary; ing the lengths of the framework A and platform B; and the capacity of the loader may be varied by changing the width of said bottom, at pleasure. -A chute D depends from the upper end of the platform, in width corresponding thereto, and a roller H is mounted transversely immediately above said upper end, its terminal pivots serving as studs whereon to hinge the upper end of said chute, as shown in Fig. 1. The outer end of said chute may be shifted vertically by means of a hand rod J connected thereto and extending upwardly along side of an ex tension of the side mill), and such movement may be limited by means of ahead. The object of thus shifting the chute is to provlde means for distributing the gravel on the vehicle bed in loading, and for elevating it out of the way of teams while passing thereunder.
The side rails b b are extended outwardly and upwardly some distance beyond the up per terminus of the platform B, and hangers K K depend from thelends thereof, and a roller-bar L is mounted pivotally thereon, the upper side of the rollerbeing about on a level with the under side of the roller H. by a suitable fastening s, whereby it is readily drawn down the floor of the platform into position for loading, and the process may be repeated at pleasure.
Various means for conveylng the scraper may, of course be employed, but as a preferred means I employ reversible drums E and-E, driven by any well known mechanism, and pass the cable Gr around the drum E to propel the scraper upwardly, and the cable G around the drum E to propel it in the opposite direction, and from the drum extend the cable to a point beyond the gravel pit N, where I secure a tackle block F to a stake f and pass the cable around this tackle pulley, and thence to the rear end of the scraper, where the same is connected as aforesaid.
Thus, after the gravel is discharged from the scraper into the chute, reverse action of the drum E automatically returns the scraper by draft upon the cable G, as shown in Fig. 2; and conveyance of the scraper and dumping of its contents is accomplished by motion ofsaid drum-E by the cable G attached to the bail M.
The movement of the scraper up the incline is shown in dotted lines C, Fig.
I am aware it is not new to convey a scraper up an inclined platform, and dump its contents from its top, and such I do not broadly claim. My invention relates particularly to the novel means employed for hauling and dumping the scraper, and for returning the same to different points of the gravel bed at a distance from the foot of the inclined platform, and lateral directions therefrom, as herein set forth.
I do not limit my invention to mere form of construction, but, havingthus fully described it, What Iclaini as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with an inclined platform having side rails, extensions of said side rails beyond said platform, a roller mounted at the summit of said platform, a roller bar suspended from said extension a short distance beyond, and parallel with said summit roller, a scraper having a bail, a cable attached to said bail, and passed over said rollers, a horizontal cross-bar above said rollers tolimit tilt of the scraper, and means for propelling said scraper in and down said platform, substantially as sctforth.
2. In a device of the characterdescribed, the combination with an inclined platform having side'rails; extensions on said rails beyond the upper end of said platform; a pair of rollers spaced apart horizontally, one of said rollers mounted across the top of said platform, and the other a short dis tance therefrom, a cross-bar above and intermediate said rollers, a chute projecting downwardly from the top of said platform,
a scraper having a bail, anda cable attached to said bail and passing'from thence over said rollers, a cable attached to the rear of said scraper, and extending therefrom to a propeller, and a tackle block located at a distance from the foot of said inclined platform engaging said cable, substantially as set forth.
3. In a device of the character described, in combination with an inclined platform having side rails, extensions on said rails, respectively, beyond the upper end ofsaid platform, a pair of horizontal rollers spaced apart beyond the upper end of said platform, a cross-rod above said rollers, a chute rle pending from the top of said platform, means for supporting the outer end of said chute, a scraper having a bail, and a cable attached to said bail and passing thence over said rollers, and means for drawing said scraper up and down said platform,substantially as set forth. i I

a cable attached to said bail and to a propelling drum, a cable attached to the rear end of said scraper and to a reversing drum, and means for co-operativcly actuating said cables; means, including a pair of horizontal rollers spaced'apart, one at the top of the platform, and the other on hangers depending from said extensions, to accomplish and limit the tilt of the scraper; and means, including a shiftable post and tackle block for conveying the scraper to predetermined positions beyond the lower end of the platform, substantially as set forth and for the purpose specified.
