PAUL SEWERYN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOCK.
Application filed January 17, 1921.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be vity known that l, PAUL SEWERYN, a citizen of Poland. residingv at New York, in the county and AState of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to. door locks, and has for one of its objects to provide an iniproved lock in which the bolt may be actuated by different cylinder locks on opposite sides of the door.
Other objects will appear as the descrip tion proceeds.
rlhe invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claim at the end of the descrip*- tion.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is an inside elevation of a lock constructed substantially in accordance with this invention and applied to a door which is shown in closed position.
Figure 2 is an outside elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the lock alone, as it appears when removed from 'the door, looking at the inner face of said lock which engages the inner face of the door when attached.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view through the door jamb, as shown in Figure 1, the keeper and part of the lock being in section.
Figure 5 is an edge view of the keeper' and j amb to which it is secured.
Figure 6 is an edge view of the lock with the door to which it is attached.
Figure 7 is a detailed view of the lock looking at the same as in Figure 3 but with the inner plate thereof removed.
Figure 3 is a central horizontal section of the lock taken longitudinally of Figure 7 Figure 9`is a detailed view of the rotary bolt, and
Figure 10 is a left hand end elevation of the lock, as shown in Figure 8, with the end of the casing broken away.
In Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, 1 designates the marginal portion of a door and 2 a part Serial No. 437,737.
of a door j amb. A lock casing 3 is secured to the door 1 by means of a projecting plate 7 formed integral with the inner plate 16 of said casing and extending inward along the edge of the door to which it is fastened by any suitable number of screws 9 and 10. The middle screw 9, as best shown in Figures 4 and 6, also engages an inwardly extending lug 8 preferably formed integral with the inner plate 16 and extending into a cavity at one side of the bore 13 in which the outer cylinder lock 12 is housed. This screw 9 is alone suflicient to hold the lock casing to the door, and the other screws 10 shown in Figures 4 and 6 may be omitted. It will be noted that the screw 9 is entirely concealed when the door is closed, see Figure 4, so that when the bolt 19 is engaged with the keeper 4, as illustrated in this figure, it will be impossible for an unauthorized person to obtain access to said screw for removing the lock from the door.
The keeper 4 is made in the form of a projecting loop on a plate 5 which is secured to the j amb 2 by screws 6. It will be noted that the lock casing is adapted to overlap the keeper, as shown in Figures 1 and 4, so as to not only cover the keeper but also conceal some of the screws 6 which fasten said keeper to the jamb. It is. therefore, impossible to remove all of the screws which hold the keeper to the j amb when the lock is fastened. As illustrated, three screws are used for fastening the keeper to the jamb and two of said screws are covered by the lock casing when the lock is fastened.
The casing 3 has a cylindrical protruding portion 11 in which a cylinder lock 5() is secured by bolts 41. The cylinder lock 12 is secured to the inner plate 16 of the lock casing by bolts 37 fixed to the plate 16 and extending throngh lugs 36 on said lock 12 so as to be in alignment with the cylindrical lock 50 when said plate 16 is in place. Nuts 38 are fitted on said bolts 37 at opposite sides of the lugs 36 for adjusting the cylinder lock 12 to lit doors of diiferent thicknesses.
A roll back 33 is secured to the lock 50 by screws 40, Figure 7, and a roll back 34 is swiveled in the plate 16 for actuation by a connecting bar 35 from the cylinder lock 12. Both roll backs 33 and 34 are adapted to be rotated so as to engage a lug 31 on a tumbler 2S which is pivoted to a bolt-actuating slide 24 at 27 and has a locking lug 29 yieldingly pressed into engagement with a stop() in the casing by a spring 32. The slide 24E has a rack 23 meshing with a segmental gear 22 formed on the hub of a rotary bolt member 18 having an arcuate bolt 19, the end of which is spaced from the opposite face 21 of said bolt member a distance greater than the length oit' the looped keeper 4. The slide 211 is guided in the casing 23 by lugs 25 projecting from saidvcasing into notches 51 in the slide. The lug 31 on the tumbler 28 extends between a pair of beveled lugs 2G on the slide 24. These beveled lugs are arranged in the path of rotation of the ends of the roll backs 33 and 34, so that after the lug 31 is engaged by either of said roll backs and the tumbler 28 moved thereby to release the lug 29 from the stop 30, said roll back Will engage one or .the other of the beveled lugs 26 to move the slide 24 in one direction or the other for rotating the bolt 19 into locked or unlocked position.
The 'cylinder' locks 12 and 50 are preferably key actuated but the keys for operating them are different, so that When the lock is fastened from one side or the other, it Will take a duplicate of the locking kel to unlock the door from the same side. ITus, Jif the door is locked from the inside, an unauthorized person cannot unlock it ywith a key which fits the outside lock.
I claim v The combination with a lock casing, of a bolt therein, separate key-actuated cylinder locks to be arran ed on opposite faces of a door, one of sai locks vbeing Amounted in the casing and the other connected to said casing but spaced therefrom, a slide operatively connected to said bolt,v ya tumbler -carr'ied 'by said slide, roll backs corresponding to said locks and mounted in the casing so that either of them may actuate .said tumbler, one of said roll ybacks being directly connected to the lock Which is .mounted `in the casing and a connecting bara-extending between the other roll back and the .lock which is spaced from the casing.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
