Description

HQ BA R M A N Pnr'ers Boxes.,
N0 15,2 888 Patented September16,183.
Ammevs.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC BARMAN, OF PORTLANDLOREGON.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTERS BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,888, dated September 16, 1873; application led May 21, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAc BARMAN, of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new andlmproved Porters Box; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a box for the use of the porter in stores, warehouses, and similar establishments. The object of the box is to provide a convenient place for the tools and materials used by him in his work.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a front View with the door let down; and Fig. 3 is a rear View.
A and B are pots for ink. One of these is used for ordinary black ink, the other may be used for white ink or paint, which is often used for marking iron. C is a distributingdish, upon which the stencil-brush may be rubbed after being dipped in the ink. This dish and the markingpots can be removed, it' necessary. Between the pots and the dish are two openings in the top of the box a e. These are to place the brushes in after using. They can thus be kept clean, and the hands are not soiled in using them. D E F G are four movable boxes, placed next to the marking-pots. These boxes are for nails of different sizes, D and E being each provided with two small compartments for tacks and screws. Next to these boxes is a case, H, divided in alphabetical order in twenty-six compartments. This is for stencil-plates,which,being thus arranged, are always ready for immediate use. I is a grindstone, placed in the corner of the box, which ena-bles theporter to sharpen his tools without danger 4of their being displaced. When not in use, the handle :may be removed. The remaining compartment J, in the top of the box, is used for receipt-books. On the right-hand side of the box, near the top, is a pocket, L, which contains cards. Near this, on the same side, is a rack, b, for tools or brushes. On the lefthand side is a similar rack, b. Between the upper and lower casings ofthe box is an open space, M and N. This space may be used for large stencils. On the right-hand side of the box is a door, O, which opens into a compartment,S,in the back interior of the box. This space may be used for the larger tools used by the porter. The front door P opens into a compartment, T, in the front interior of the box. This space is divided in compartments suitable for keeping books, paper, ink, twine, &e. In one ot' these compartments is a bell, the handle of which projects through the top of the box. This bell is used for calling the porter. The cushion p,on the inside ot' the door P, is used for packing-needles. v The whole box is mounted upon strong casters, It R R, by means of which it may be moved to any part of the store.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The porters7 box, constructed as described, with the compartments D, E, F, G, S, and T for nails, compartments H for stencils, pots A and B for ink, with distributing-dish C for stencilbrush, as and for the purposes specified.
