PIANO HOIST.

To (LZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l, SAMUEL B. BILGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bucl-zingham, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Piano Hoists, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in piano hoists, and has for its object to provide an improved construction of elevator jack which may be readily supported by the walls of a building within the same adjacent a window or other opening and carrying means for actuating the hoisting cable or rope.
A further ob ect of the invent-1011 is to provide an lmproved construction for booms for devices of this character with means for holding the lower portion thereof to the window frame and to provide means for connecting said boom to the elevator jack which will limit its outward movement, said means also acting as a hanger for the slide board.
Another object of the invention is to provide a truck forming a part of the hoist, said truck carrying adjustable handles and an adjustable roller which may be thrown out of operative position when not in use.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination. of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which Fig. 1, is a fragmentary perspective view of the corner of a building showing my improved piano hoist in operative position on which a piano is shown about to be lowered.

In carrying out my invention as here enrhodied, 2 represents the elevator jack comprising uprights 3 preferably formed of angle iron and bent to producer upper and lower arms 4L and 5 arranged at angles to each other and the upper ends of these uprights are connected to a cross piece 6 which is adapted to rest-against the inside wall of a building above the window or other opening, while the lower ends of the uprights rest upon a floor of the building and against the inside of the wall thereof as plainly shown in Fig. 2. At the angle or the elbow formed between the two arms of the uprights are arranged suitable journals 7 for the shaft 8 carrying a drum 9 with which is connected a grooved pulley 10 over which runs a belt 11 or its equivalent the same also passing over a grooved pulley 12 connected with the crank shaft 13 suitably journalled in one of the uprights of the elevator jack so that by turning the crank shaft the drum 9 will be revolved for winding up the hoisting cable or rope as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
The reference numeral 14 denotes the boom comprising two standards 15 connected to the cross piece 16 at their upper ends and on this cross piece is journalled a shive wheel 17 over which runs the hoisting cable or rope 18 one end being wound about the drum 9 and the other end being permanently fastened to the cross piece 16 as at 19 and on this hoisting cable is mounted a block 20 which is adapted to be attached to the piano harness consisting of the straps 21 which pass around the pi ano or box containing the same. both transversely and longitudinally and a truck 33 of any well known or desired construction. The lower ends of the standards of the boom rest upon the lower portion of the window sill as shown in Fig. 2 and to prevent the likelihood of these standards slipping I utilize attaching brackets 22 shown in Figs. 4 and 5 each of which comprises a hub 23 having a hole 24 therethrough for registration with a standard and an arm 25 curved edgewise longitudinally so as to pass around and engage the inside of the window frame and this arm is arranged at an angle to the hub as shown in Fig. 5 so that when the standard to which it is attached is in a position similar to that shown in Fig. 2 the arm will be approximately horizontal. These attachingbrackets will prevent the boom from being pulled away from the window sill while a piano is being raised or lowered.
In order to hold the boom at an. angle or a given position I provide suspension cables or ropes 26 each of which has a knot 27 therein which normally lies within the standard, holes 28 and beingprovided in the standard for the passage of the suspension cable, one of said holes as 29 be ing large enough to permit the passage of the knot 27 therethrough while the other hole is so small as to prevent the passage of said knot and that portion of the sus pension cable leading from this hole is attached to the elevator jack at some suitable place as the cross piece 6. The other end of the suspension cable hangs down from the boom as shown in Fig. 2 and the end thereof is provided'with a loop 30 for attachment to a bar 31 which passes under the slide board 32 so that the two suspension cables with the bar 31 supports the outer end of'the slidei board, while the inner end of said board rests upon the window sill.
Of course Ido not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. A piano hoist comprising in combination an elevator jack adapted to rest upon the floor of a building and engage the inner face of a wall thereof in the region of a window, a boom adapted to rest upon the window frame and project upwardly and outwardly therefrom, attaching brackets for holding the boom to the window frame, suspension cables attached to the elevator jack and passing through the boom, said cables having knots tied therein for preventing out 3 ward movement of the boom, the ends of said cables being provided with loops for receiving the ends of a bar, a shive wheel on said boom, a hoisting cable provided with a block and passing over said shive wheel and having one end fastened to the boom, and means on the elevator ack for actuating the hoisting cable.
