Patented Sept. 12, 1922.
UNITED STATES EDWARD BITTEL, OF FOREST PARK, ILLINOIS.
FAUCET.
Application filed March 1, 1920.
To all 20 from it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD BITTEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forest Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in faucets, and more particularly to faucets of the type commonly known as mixing valves.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be extremely simple in construction and operation, and economical to manufacture, while at the same time providing for efficient and positive actuation, and retaining all the other advantages of the more expensive mixing valves now in common use.
' Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following specification when read in the light of the accompanying drawings, wherein one form of the invention is illustrated.
Figure 1 is a sectional view, taken through a mixing valve constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is an elevation of thevalve member and its operating stem, the mixing chamber being shown in dotted lines, in order to illustrate more clearly the mechanism whereby longitudinal movement is imparted to the valve member upon each rotative movement thereof.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the faucet or mixing valve is designated in its entirety as 10, and comprises a. cylindrical mixing chamber 11, having a centrally disposed outlet 12 in one end wall thereof, this outlet terminating in a laterally disposed discharge nozzle 13. The mixing chamber is also provided with a plurality of lateral inlets 14c and 15, which communicate with the interior of the chamber through the side wall thereof. Mounted within the mixing chamber 11 on an operating stem 16 is a piston-like valve member 17, of substantially the same diameter as the interior diameter of said chamber and having suitable openings 17 therein. This valve member is provided with a rearwardly extending flange 17, of a contour corresponding to that of the inner surface of the chamber and closely fitting against the latter. This Serial No. 362,330.
flange is designed to close the inlet openings 1 1 and 15, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. A valve seat in the form of a leather gasket, or the like 17, is carried on the front face of the valve member 17 and surrounds the operating stem 16, this valve seat being designed to close the outlet 12 of the faucet when the valve member is in its normal position, as shown in Fig. 1. As will be observed, the operating stem extends centrally through the outlet 12 and the mixing chamber 11, said stem being provided with an operating grip or handle 16 At the point where the stem projects through the casing of the faucet asuitable screwthrcaded cap 18 and packing 18 are pro vided, in order to prevent leakage. The valve member 17 slidably and rotatably mounted in the mixing chamber, and, as will be observed, upon rotation of this member the rearwardly projecting flange 17 will be moved in one direction or the other to uncover one of the inlet openings 1 1 or 15. A cam recess 17 is provided in the front face of the valve member, and extends for a short distance along its outer periphery. This cam recess is designed to receive the cam 19 provided on the inner adjacent face of the end plate of the mixing chamber.
From this construction it will he observed that upon rotation of the valve member 17 to uncover or open either of the inlets 1 1 or 15, said valve member will be simultaneously moved longitudinally within the chamber 11 away from the outlet end thereof, thus uncovering the outlet 12 and providing a direct passage from the open inlet through apertures 17 of valve 17 to the discharge nozzle 13. The cam 19, being carried by the end plate of the mixing chamber, is, of course, stationary, and as soon as the valve member 17 is rotated said member is caused to ride up upon the cam, thereby imparting to the valve member a longitudinal movement within the mixing chamber simultaneously with the rotary movement imparted thereto through the operating stem 16. As soon as it is desired to out off communication between the inlet which has been opened and the discharge nozzle, it is merely necessary to rotate the stem 16 until the cam recess in the face of the valve member has been brought into cooperative relation with respect to the cam, whereupon the valve member will be automatically returned to its normal closed position through the agency of the coil spring 20, which, as will be observed, is interposed between the rear face of the valve member and the adjacent end wall of the mixing chamber 11. I
In order to permit the stem 16to reciprocate back and forth with the valve member 17 as the latter is operated to open or close communication between the outlet and one or the other of the inlets, the end wall of the chamber 11, against which the spring 20 seats, is provided with a rearwardly projecting, centrally disposed socket 21', adapted to receive the inner end of the stem 16. In this manner longitudinal movements of the stem are permitted, while at the same time a guide is provided for the rear end of the stem. The forward portion of the stem is guided by the cap 18 at its point of projection through the casing of the valve.
As will, be readily appreciated, one of the inlets is for connection with a suitable cold water supply, while the other member may be connected with a supply of hot water, so that by turning the valve member 17 in one direction cold water may be obtained, while a turning thereof in the opposite direction will close the cold water inlet and open the hot water inlet. hen it is desired to obtain a mixture of both hot and cold water through the discharge nozzle, the valve member 17 is rotatedin either direction a sufficient distance to fully uncover or open both inlets; or, if desired, the mixture may be regulated to any degree by fully uncovering or opening one or the other of the inlets, and only partly opening the other. In this manner a mixture of hot and cold water of any desired temperature may be obtained.
While the valve member 17 has been shown as formed integrally with the operating stem 16, it will of course be appreciated that said member may be formed separately and attached by a key, or otherwise, to the stem, so that it may be moved longitudinally on the stem upon rotation of the latter.
It will also be obvious to'those skilled in the art that the present improvements are susceptible of changes and modification, and accordingly it is not desired to limit the invention to the particular construction and details herein described and illustrated, except as defined in the appended claims.
I claim l 1. In a device of the class described, a cylindrical mixing chamber, an outlet at one end thereof, a plurality of laterally disposed inlets, a piston-like valve member normally closing both of said inlets and said outlet, means for rotating said valve member to un cover one or both of said inlets, means for simultaneously moving said valve member longitudinally within said cylinder to open said outlet, and means for automatically returning said valve member to its normal closed position when said last named means is in operative position. v
2. In a faucet of the type described, a cylindrical mixing chamber, an outlet in one end wall thereof, laterally arranged inlets in the side wall of said chamber, a circular plate slidably and rotatably mounted Within said chamber and provided with a rearwardly projecting flange adapted to close said inlets, means also carried by said plate for closing said outlet, said plate being provided with a cam seat formed in one of its faces, and a stationary cam designed for coopera tion with said seat whereby upon rotationof said plate to open either or both of said inlets said. plate will also be moved longitudinally within said cylinder to thereby open said outlet.
A mixing valve comprising a cylindrical chamber, an outlet and a plurality of inlets therefor, a piston-like valve member in the form of a plate slidably and rotatably mounted within said chamber, the front face of said plate normally closing said outlet, a rearwardly projecting flange on the rear face of said plate adapted to normally close said inlets, means for rotating said valve to open either or both of said inlets, and a stationary cam mounted within said cham ber and engaging said plate for moving the latter rearwardly to uncover said outlet simultaneously with the opening of said inlets.
In testimony whereof, I havesubscribed my name.
