UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.;
WILLIAM D. RICHARDSON, OF PAWTUOKET, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAINTED-CLOTH COVERS.
Specification forming part `ot' Letters Patent No. 142,868, dated September 16, 1873 application led May 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. RICHARD- SON, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Painting and Ornamenting on Cloth, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the process of painting and ornamenting on Woolen, broadcloth, velvet, oilcloth, and other material which is used for covering writing-tables, desks, cardtables, and play-tables of all kinds, and which process has been hitherto done by painting on the cloth being stretched and tacked on a board or frame. The outlines of the design to be painted are marked on the cloth; the same is suitably scraped with glass or sand-paper, and nished on the surface obtained thereby in colors according to fancy. The finished cloth was then taken down and transferred to the article intended to be covered. On account of the soft pliable nature of the cloth the painted designs and ornaments were liable to be damaged by the handling, and the painting cracked and broken thereby. The change and shrinkage of the cloth incidental to the taking down from the temporary board distorted the painted parts, besides oiering great difficulties to the even stretching and tacking of the same on the articles to be covered; still more was this the case when the cloth had to be sent to a distance, by which it was sometimes entirely spoiled. My invention is intended to obviate these defects and produce not only a superior article, which can be stored, transferred, and sent to any distance, but by which also printed and lithographed designs may be transferred and fixed on the cloth, extending thereby the manufacture of such covers. My invention consists in so permanently fastening the cloth by stiffening and backing it by suitable material and binding it with metal edges, that it may be handled without difficulty, transferred at will, and be shipped without damage.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top View of a sample of my painted cloth as backed and bound with metal edges, and Fig. 2l is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents, in the drawing, the cloth or other material used for painting and ornamentingywhich is backed before painting on any stit' material B, Whether of pasteboard, wood, metal, rubber, or any combination of the same, provided it is thick and strong enough to fasten permanently and securely thereon. It is cut ot' the exact size required, and bound with metallic edges to protect the edges and prevent a disconnection of the cloth from the board A. The metal edges G serve also as an ornamental finish. If used as a table-cover, it may be glued, tacked, .or screwed down, or it may also be used as movable cover, and be made with leather and cloth hinges a to be folded up, which, in the case of chess-boards and other games, is very desirable.
On account of the stiff nature of the cloth, any printed, lithographed, or transferred design may be used by ixing it suitably on the cloth, and thereby a great deal of labor saved, besides increasing the scope and effect of this branch of industry.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of apainted-cloth cover with a rigid backing of pasteboard or other suit-able material for protecting the painted parts thereon, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The painted-cloth cover, with a pasteboard or equivalent stiffening, and With metal bindings to protect and finish the edges of the cover, as specified.
