for use in connection withhand manipulated.
floor brushes, mops, etc. r
rIhe primary obfect of theinvention is,
the provision of `a paily or'portable receptacle orcontainer for oil, water' and other liquids used in `treating vor cleaning floors andV similar lsurfaces, to which the brush or mop` may be applied from time ,to time and the .required -amountof ,liquidA withdrawn therefrom by contact with a dispensing member. By the utilization of my invention waste of material is'prevented, time and laborsaved, and theydevice is convenient for facile usef'in the performanceof its functions. f
Tor thisv end the invention consists essentially in a portable container orpail having `a rotary .carrier` partially immersedin the oil or other liquid in the container and adaptedto be revolved by contact from a brush or mop for moistening or dampening the latter, and in certain novel combinations and arrangements off-parts` as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete embodiment of the invention utilized as a brush oiler for moistening a brush preparatory to applying the oil to a floor or other surface for laying the vdust and cleaning the floor, the parts of the device being combined and arranged according to the best mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the pail of my invention, open, and ready for use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged, vertical transverse sectional view of the pail of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through the pail and its rotary dispensing drum. i
Figure L1 is an enlarged, detail view showing the concave upper face of the cross bar of the pail handle or bail adapted to receive the rounded yhandle of the brushor mop.
While the pail is adapted for numerousy uses, for convenience of illustration and description I shall hereinafter refer to it as an oiler for brushes used in cleaning lioors, and in the preferred form of the invention as shown in the drawings, the pail 1 isy preferably made up of sheet metal, generally rectangular in form, but provided with a pair of converging side walls 2, 2, which, at their upper ends approach one another sufficiently to form a throat or -restricted opening 3 extending` the full length of the pail. From the throat the material of the side walls extend outwardly and kmerge, into lateral wings 1 4J presenting upper surfaces vlo-l cated below the top edge of the pail and declining toward the throat or opening of` the pail as best Seen iny Figure 2. `At one side ofthe pail a wired rib 5 is formed as ka brace, and the pail is equipped with a handle 6, preferably fixed at the ends thereof. In Figure 4 particularly it willrbe seen that the handle is fashioned with a longitudinally extending groove-7 in its handle` bar'which readily adapts the handle to receive the` rounded-y handle ofthe brush ory -mop in order that the brush handle `may be `laid in the handle bar, extending longitudinally of the pail, andwhen the handle bar andbrush handle are grasped inthe hand, the pail and brush may be carried,
vwith 4Athe brush handle in horizontal position, thus enabling the bearer4 or carrier to pass through doorways or other narrow spaces and manipulate the devices with facility.
The ends and flared wings of the pail form a substantially rectangular and wide opening that is vclosed by the complementary lid 8, also of sheet metal, and hinged as at 9 along one side of the pail opposite the rib 5, and the outer free edge of the lid has a lianffe 10, which when the lid is closed fits over the rib 5 with a snap andis frictionally held closed thereby. When the lid is turned back to position in Figures 1 and 2 it is supported from the floor by a hinged plate or arm 11, vand in this position the flange 1() which extends upwardly is used as a scraper for the brush or mop as will be described. An additional, Xed brace, or metal strap 12 may be utilized between the converging wall of the pail and the iaring wing, beneath the hinge `joint 9 of the lid to insurev ay stable position of the parts.
The oil dispensing drum 13 is a closed, metal cylinder havingl an axle 14, journaled at its ends l5 in the end walls of thepail, and located in such position that it will be partially immersed in the oil inthe pail with a portion of its upper surface protruding through the restricted opening or longitudinal throat 3 of the pail. The periphery7 of thedrum, it ywill be noted in IFigure 2,
i co-acts vwith theV edges of the throat to form handle, and with the pail resting on the floor as indicated in the drawings, the brush head or its bristles are utilized to revolve or rotate the drum, the ldrum brings a yfilm of oil -on its outer surface up through the throat, the oil is wiped orf the drum by the brush, and the surfacesA of the two wings maybe utilized, by passing the brush back and forth thereover the required number of times, for distributing the oil over the en-y tire brush, preparatory to application to the floor. The liange 11 is utilized as a scraper to remove excess oil from the face of the brush, by passing the brush over the scraper or flange, and the oil scraped from the brush runs down the inclined face of the lid and eventually `inds its Way into the receptacle over-,the declining wing 4.
It will readily be apparent that the brush may be worked back andforth over the drum, tol wipeythe oilglm therefrom, and also be worked 'or passed' back andforth over the wings or lid to equally` distribute the oil on the:bri ish,unti1 the desired quantity of oil is applied to the brush, and then thebrush is ready for usual action on the nection with l f myffd-rawings-it isA apparent,v
that I- have provided a devicewofvthis character which is comparatively simple inconstruction andoperation, `inexpensive in cost, and rovides a `comparatively perfect-,device ior performing fits. required functions.
Having thus. rfully fdescribedfmy invention, what- I claim anddesire-to secure. by Letters n Patentfis l. The combination avithy a rectangular container having vertical ,f endwalls and convergingy side.y walls lforming a longitudinally extending throat, of adrumy rotatable inthe container and-.havinga part ofits upper portion --projecting v through said throat, said container yhaving upwardly diverging side wings, orqthe `purpose described. i
2. The combination with a container havingconverging sidewalls forming a throat andA a revolvable -distributing?.drum -in said container' :having f az-.portion protruding through said throat, of si-de Jwings outwardly AHaring from'.`r said throat,v a4 hinged lid for the container f having a `flan e on lits free edgefandlasupport for said lidfor f the purpose described.
fIn testimony whereof' I :afiix `my 1 signaf ture.
