Be it known that I, WILLIAM Ziiiinrir, a citizen of the United cStates, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and 5 State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Looms, of which the following is a speciiication.
The present invention relates to looms, and it consists in part in certain improvements in shuttle impelling means for looms of the class in which the shuttle-impelling orpioking member'is spring-pressed and in part in certain improvements in the means for controlling the starting and stopping of the loom. j

which I claim, as will be hereinafter pointed out.
In order, as set forth in my mentioned application, to prevent tripping of the picking members when the power is shut off and the loom is to be turned over7 by hand, l have provided the levers g respectively fulcrumed on the brackets e to move in horizontal planes over the inner ends of the cooking shoes, the levers being connected by the links r with the ends of an intermediate lever s fulcrumed on shaft Z) so that their rearward ends move inward and outward together and being adapted to be actuated from the controlling shaft t of the loom through a rod u and a lever a having a slot receiving the tongue g of one of the levers g. Each lever Q has a bearing g2 (Fig. 6) in which is vertically movable a button fv whose lower end rests on the corresponding cooking shoe and wipes over the saine when the levers g are moved into and out of position to be depressed by the corresponding lever Z and so depress the cooking shoe.
On one end of shaft t is fixed a lever 'zo which above the shaft has a handle, as shown, and a lug w projecting inwardly from a rearwardly extending arm L02 and below the shaft a roller w3. rllhis roller travels in a cam-slot in a lever .r which is fulcrumed in the loom side to move in a horizontal plane and controls the suitably driven movable member g/ of a clutch on the crank shaft e of the loom; when lever w is moved to the full-line position shown in Fig. 8 the roller engages in a notch m in the cam slot of lever so that the lever becomes locked in the new position and holds the clutch member against the clutch member 2, suitably driven and freely revoluble on the shaft 2v, so that the power is on and the loom is driven. In an adjusting slot of armw of lever w is pivoted a forwardly projecting pawl 3 having a depending hook or nose at its forward end. Freely oscillative on the shaft t is a lever It whose hub has an upwardly projecting lug` la to be engaged by pawl 3. The upper end of this lever is opposed by and engageable with lug w of the other lever and it forms a handle and has an outwardly projecting lug lb positioned so as to be abutted by the pawl B in a way to be stated; the lower end of said lever l is forked, at 4C, and it has a lateral web la affording an impact face for the dagger 5 of a weft-stop mechanism, the remaining part of which is not shown since it is not material and may be of any usual construction. Said fork 4l? contains a roller le and it receives the upwardly projecting end of a brake lever 6 which under the influence of a spring 7 normally tends to hold a band 8 in braking engagement with a brakewheel 9 on the crank shaft; but when lever l is moved to the full-line position in Fig. 8 and the roller 4;@ consequently runs along the incline 6a of brake-lever 6 and finally falls in a notch 6b therein the two levers t and 6 are locked in that position, holding the brake released. liever 6 has an upright set-screw 6 which underlies pawl 3. On the other end of shaft t there may be fixed another lever l0.
The backward limit of movement of the lever fw (Fig. 9) is determined by roler w3 reaching the forward end of the slot in lever Spring-pressed lever 6 affords the principal motive power to throw the levers l and w, once roller e@ is made to clear the notch 6b. Thus, if lever e be pushed back (by hand or by the dagger 5 going into action) suliicientlyto clear roller el@ from the notch, or if it be pulled back to the same extent by the pawl 3 as the result of the attendant` rocking shaft t by pushing back on either lever w or l0, said lever at once it is thus tripped will be thrown back violently by brake vlever 6 against lug w thus to impel lever w to the prescribed limit `of backward movement thereof so as to throw off the power, but not before brake-lever 6 has applied the brake to the crank shaft. wWhen the levers move toward their backward positions (Fig. 9) pawl 3 wipes over set screw 6c, which rises with brake-lever 6, and so it becomes cleared from lug l* and takes position behind lug lb. The operator can now move and lock forward the lever et alone, since the two levers w and 4 are uncoupled, for the purpose of releasing the brake and turning over the loom by hand; and in operating the loom in this way, it will be noted, the picking mechanism will not be actuated because, shaft t remaining in the position of Fig. 9, the buttons -v are withdrawn from between the levers Z and the cooking shoes. lf the loom is to be started again under power the lever fw is moved to the position of Fig. 8; if the lever 4l is back (Fig. 9), the pawl by abutting lug lb transmits the movement to lever Il, the pawl falling as soon as the operator relaxes the pressure on lever fw and thus again clearing lug 4", asin Fig. 8. lWhat I have thus described with respect to the power and brake control means is not new except in so far as it involves the coupling afforded by pawl 3. rlhat is to say, given a brake actuating member, as 4t, and an actuating member, as w, for the power controlling means, such members being movable back and forth substantially parallel with each other, it is new to provide a coupling normally connecting them and adapted to move the first member to the brake-applying position when the second member is moved to position to cut off the power, and means to uncouple the coupling from one member upon their moving to said position, whereby the brake member may thereupon be moved to release the brake independently of the second member. It is alsonew, given member, whereby the latter member canl then be moved in the other direction independently of or by the other member through said coupling.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In combination, a loom frame, braking means including an actuating member niovable back and forth to apply and release the brake, power controlling means including an actuating member movable back andy forth substantially parallel with the first member to apply and cut off the power, a coupling normally connecting said meinbers and adapted to move the first member ond member moves to position to cut 0H the power, and means to uncouple lsaid coupling from one member upon said members moving to .said positions, whereby the first member may be thereupon moved to release said brake independently of the second member. l
