UTNHTEE essee A DAVID M. CLEVENG'ER, OF R-EEDS, MISSOURI.
HARE O'W.
Application filed October 12, 1920. Serial No. 416,421.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID M. CLnvnNonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reeds, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates broadly to improvements in harrows, and it has more particular reference 'to a novel evener for use in connection with such a device.
One object of the invention is to provide a harrow including a novel evener which in turn includes novel clamps provided with channel portions receiving the evener bar and oppositely disposed relatively long attaching ears provided with a plurality of apertures to permit the draft connectors to be connected with some of the apertures and also permit other connectors, between the evener bar and blade carrying frame, to be connected with some of the other apertures; this construction also permitting the clamp to be reversed to compensate for wear, and thus increasing the life of the improved evener.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same: I
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a harrow constructed in accordance with my invention.
- Figure 2 is an enlarged detail view taken on the plane of the line 44 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the clamps used in connection with my improved evener.
Referring to the drawings, wherein the preferred embodiment of my improvements is clearly illustrated, it will be seen that the harrow includes a plurality of frames 1, all of which are inclined with respect to the path of travel, all being inclined in the same direction, and each including a plurality of Extending transversely ity of the device without materially increasing the cost of manufacture. bar 5 carries a plurality of clamps, designated as a whole, by the numeralsfi. These clamps can be best seen in Fig. 3. Byirefer-ring to this figure, it will be seen that each clamp is composed ofa pair of flat metal plates placed one on top of the other in the manner shown. Each plate is bent between its ends to provide channel portions 8 for reception of the bar 5, and a. pair of relatively long oppositely extending attaching ears 9, the latter being provided with a plurality of apertures, for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. As best seen in Fig. 2, clamping bolts 10 extend through the apertures 11 which are adjacent the evener bar on opposite sides of the latter. These clamping bolts, as is obvious, retain the clamps in positionon' said bar and permit them to be adjusted along the latter. Suitable flexible connectors 12' including links with clevises at their opposite ends are employed for the purpose of attaching said bar 5 to the frames 1. connected to the attaching eyes 4, while the other clevises are connected to the desired apertures 11 in said clamps.
A plurality of draft connectors including divergent rods 14 and an intermediate rod 15 are pivotally connected at one of their ends to some of the apertures 11 in said,
clamps. This particular arrangement of the members 14 and 15 insures an even pull at all times and causes the frames 1 to move directly forward instead of from. side to side as oftentimes occurs. Conventional hitching means including a doubletree 16 and a pair of singletrees 17, are connected with said draft connector means in any suitable manner.
To complete the improved device, I make This evener Some of the clevises are use of a plurality of suitable cutting blades 18, having beveled cutting edges 19, the same being bolted or otherwise detachably secured to the blade carrying frames as indicated. at 22.
From the foregoing desorption, it will be seen that l. have devised a harrow in cluding novel and effective evener means or draft connecting means. {)ne of the main features of construction of the evener resides in the employment of the novel clamp provided with a plurality of attaching apertures which permit the separable parts of the clamp to be reversed to compensate for wear, and to permit the same clamp to serve as means for attachment of the draft connectors and flexible connectors which secure the evener bar to said frames. These, and other constructional features have, no doubt, be come apparent from the foregoing description.
The foregoing description is thought to be sufficient to enable persons skilled in the art -to which this invention appertains, to obtain a clear understanding of the same and to be able to make and use the same. For this reason, a more lengthy description is deemed unnecessary.
Since probably the best results may be obtained with the construction and arrangement of parts shown, I take this construction and arrangement as the preferred embodiment of my invention. However, I wish it to be understood that various minor changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the adjoined claims.
I claim:
1. In a harrow, the combination of a plurality of frames, all inclined in the same direction and including blade carrying bars; of angle members including eyes secured to the opposite forward corners of said frames, an evener bar, clamps carried thereby, flexible members connected to said clamps and the aforesaid eyes, and diverging draft connectors attached to said clamps.
2. In a harrow, the combination with a plurality of blade carrying frames; of attaching members secured to the opposite forward corners thereof; a relatively long cylindrical bar spaced. from and extending transversely across the front of the frames; a plurality of clamps on said bar, each clamp being up of two plates placed together and bent between their ends to form channels receiving said bar and relatively long oppositely extending attaching ears on opposite sides of the channels, said ears being provided with a plurality of apertures, and retaining bolts passing through the apertures adjacent said bar; flexible connectors including clevises connected with said other apertures and connected to the aforesaid attaching members; and draft connecting means including members connected with some of the apertures of the clamps.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
DAVID M. CLEVE-NGER.
