1 w BRANNAN ROAD DRAG 0R GRADING MACHINE. APPIAICATIONFILED MAR. 16 192i.
Patented Septiv5, 1922.` n l is -f-UNITED STA? Joann. 'BaAnNAn ory carini) filfsniinnnnnaasxiil j, l 1
To all whom t may concern; 'It f Be it knOWn'thatIQJOHNW. BRANNAN',l a citizen of the vUnited States, residingzat Grand'lfsland, inthe' countyof Hall and State of Nebraska, have invented fcertain new and use-ful 'Improvementsffin' Road Drag or Grading Machines7 of vvhiohpthe following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying'dravvings. f l* It is the purpose'of he present invention to provide a machine of this character in-` volving mean'sfornotronly loosening up the" ling the object tor fill the roller with fluid,
places and the ruts, but also for eliminatingthem, vgradingthe road and rolling, 15
leveling and'iiattening'the same; l i
' 'Anotherfpurpose consists in theprovision i of fa i hollow roller.' following the grading andleveling'means of the machin@ .for not only flattening the road, but also forpack-- ing the earth, to insurea solidy bed, -it' be.
4 such as water orthe like7 to give itweight i, grading the road [bedl` It is afurther purpose toprovide means for Vraising the' gradingjor levelingjlblade,4
the object being 'to permitthe dirt graded from one'place or'another` to be dropped in 'lower places, thereby ,uniformlyl grading thebed- L E -v i 5 A" still furtherl purpose i. consists in" a l barrow `device -including yteethffor looseni ing up the high place's'in the roads, infcorniV bination with means for raising theharrovving device, forfuniformlyr controlling the action of the same.
While'the design and .`const-rnction,atv
present illustrated :and setf forth isf deemed preferable, it is obviousthatasa result of a"redu ction of the invention to a" more practical form for commercial purposes, the

is/connected, eitherby bolts,*rivets drthe like 34. If'bolts'are usedf for connecting the blade to the bar 32, th'enitis obvious that'the road grading-blade `may be easilyI and quick-y y detached, for renewal, or for repairs. It will-be noted that the bar 32 and, its blade are disposed on an in'cline transversely of the frame, so as lto deflect the dirt 'andthe like to one side of thermazchine, a's they vtravels over the road bed. Securedvupon the'angle iron or bar 32 as at 39 is a footpedal 4:0, upon which foot pressure by the operator may be applied, to facilitate cutting the hard spots and high places of the'road bed. In kother words should one side of the roadbed have hard portions or vhigh places which yare Vnot touched, or only partial-ly so, the harrow teeth, then the operator may apply pressure upon thevleft hand side of the road grading blade, to insurecutting awaythe hard portions and insure leveling thesurface of the road. l
second foot pedalll isyhin'gedly mount.- ed at 42 to the intermediate angle iron or bar 5 ,and in turn hingedly orpivot'allyl connected 'at 13' ,tothel angle iron ory bar I32 (which carries the road''grading blade 3 3), and
its foot vengaging portion la disposedin close'y position towthe /operatorfssea whereby it may be reached by the'floot ,of l,the, operatori Foot pressure may be applied upon pedal 41, for the sarneffpurpose vas for applying pressure upon'the pedal 40. Mainly fof forcingthe cuttingv edge of the'road grading blade aware am? l e road, to insure cutting and removing the hard spots, and raised portions of the surface ofthe road- U a Suitable draft bars 5 are secured at ,46 to the forward ends fof the side angle irons or hars 2 and 3, and terminate inl hooks 4:7 at their forward eiids.l 'Draft rods 4,8 are con"-L nectd tothe hooks :47 b'y'means of Athee'yes et The @lmftrods 48 @GeV-@fee twerd'eafih other, and their adjacent ends`,fwlii`ch have eyes', are :connected byy n ieans of a clevisring 5,0, tol whichfa-ny suitable draft;v equalizer (not shown) may be connected, for .drawing the machine over the surface of the road.
'Itis possible tov retrieve th road grading blad@ 33,' andin its1 stead apply7 another set of` harrow teeth .consisting'of,l any numberv of teeth alternately arranged with the first row upon the surface of the of harrow teeth, the rollerbeing left in v place, therefore in this case the lmachine may be used asa harrower and' roller combined for harrowing a :lield and lpacking ,the seed bed, as well.y as for road grading, or dragl work.` the is disposed with and y an extra nulnber of teetharef'usedfthe lield may be harrowed .and the seedy bed packed.y
