Be it known that/I, THAD CL RK, a oitizen of the United States, residing at Americus, in the county of Sumter and State of Georgia, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Pens, of which the followis a specification.
i This invention relates to improvementsln fountain pens and has for an objectthe provision of a self filling fountain pen having automatically operated means for closing the filling opening, whereby, when the whereby the above mentioned closing means will be opened to permit of the entrance of ink into the pen, means being provided for cutting ofi the ink when the pen has become filled and forpermitting of the escape of air as the parts are returned to their normal position.
-With the aboveand other objects in view the invention further includes the following' novel features and details of construction, to .be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanyin drawings and pointed out in the appende claims. In the drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a fountain pen constructed in accordanoe with the invention and shown 1n writing positionf Figure 2 is a similar view of the pen in filling position, the parts being in'the position occupied just prior to their return to normal position.
Referring in detail to the drawings,
wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding, parts, the-reference character 10 indicates the body of the pen which is of hollow tubular formation and isv threaded at its lower end to receive a plug 11 which'oarries a pen point 12. This pen point is held in place by a grooved bar or wedge 13, so that ink from the interior of the pen body will be fed to the point by capillary attraction, in the usual well known The opening in the plug 11 which receives the point 144 and wedge 13 provides both an outletfor the ink when the pen is in -use and an inlet port 14 to provide for filling the pen. This port is closed by a ball valve 15 and the inner end of the plug 11 is eoncaved so that the ball will close the .port 14 when the pen is held in a vertical position asshown in Figure 2 of the drawings, but will maintain the ort in an open position when the pen is in use, as
shown in Figure 1 of-the drawings.
Operating within the body 10 is a tubular piston 16 which is provided at its inner end with a port 17. The inner end of the piston 16 is surrounded by spaced annu lar flanges 18 and 19, between which is positioneda washgr 20. This .washer bears against the inner wall of the. body 10 so as to provide a leak proof joint.

In the use of the pen, when the latter is held in writing position, the ball 15 will be moved by gravlty to one side of the center of the pen away from the port 14 so as to permit of a flow of ink to the pen point 12.

A .fountain pen comprising a tubular body, a plug secured in one end thereof, a pen point carried by the plug, a port in said plug, a hollow tubular piston movable 'within the tubular body, a port at the inner /end of the piston, means whereby the piston may be pulled outward to fill said body, a manually controlled air escape port located in the opposite end of'the piston, a float valve controlling the port at the inner end of the piston and means for automatically closing the port in the tubular body when the pen is' in a vertical position and automatically opening said port when the pen is in an inclined position.
