APPLICATION FILED MAR. 31. 1920.

LQTJIS, MISSOURI.
oan'ron'.
Application filed March 31, 1820.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JnNs 0. LARSEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, ll lissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cartons, and has for its object a covering for dairy products such as butter, oleomargarine and like products, the inner surface of the carton provided with an attached lining of oiled or paratlin material which is simultaneously folded around the product during the same operation of the folding of the carton.
A further object of my invention is to form a lining of approximately the same shape as the carton or enclosure, and a means for holding the lining intact to the carton so that the wrapping process is simultaneous.
This method dispenses with handling the product twice or more, during the wrapping, as the inner lining is attached to the inner face of the carton proper.
Figure 1, is a plan view of the carton' blankp Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the carton in the act of being folded in shape.
F ig. 3, is a vertical sectional view of the folded or closed carton.
Fig. 1, is anenlarged view of the same. Fig. 5, is a detail sectional view showing the fastening device by which the lining is held in place.
Fig. 6, is a. detail perspective view of a portion of the lining showing the slit through which the fastening device is passed.
Fig. 7, is a detail perspective view of a portion of the carton showing the'fastcniug device.
Referring to the drawings in detail 8 in dicates the blank or body of a carton, the
same being provided with scores a, 7), c, and (I, on which lines the body is folded to a rectangular container or package.
The body is likewise provided with cross scores 6, f, a, 72., and 7:, on which lines the ends may be folded to form the end closures.
The blank when folded forms an elongated body consisting of four walls 9 lO-11 and 12 and a flap 13, the wall 9 havlng end flaps 14 and 15, the walls 10 and 12 each an end flap 16 arranged oppositely and each is provided with a score j, forming tongues Serial No. 370,244.
17 which are designed to be inserted in the end closure for holding the package closed.
The wall 11 has end flaps 18 which are provided with lining fastening devices consisting of prongs 19 formed by slitting the material on the lines 20. The wall 9 is likewise provided with prongs of the same formatlon. i
)n this flattened out blank is placed a lining 21, the same being cut in the shape as shown by dotted lines (Figure This lining has additional flaps is, which are the first flaps to contact with the ends of the product wrapped in the carton.
he lining is provided with slits 22 which are passed over the prongs 19, which hold the lining in place on the carton blank, and.
is simultaneously wrapped around the product with the carton.
n wrapping up the product the cake is placed on the wall 12 of the blank, the flap 13 is the first folded, then turning over the cake it bends the carton on the score line 0, then on Z), then on a, permitting the prongs on the wall 9 to contact with the outer surface of the flap 13.
The lining flaps 7c are then bent in on the ends of the cake, then the flaps 14 and 15 as well as the flaps 18 are bent over on top of the lining flap 7c, bringing the locking prongs 19 of the flaps 18 in contact with the upper surface of the flaps 14c and 15, then the package is firmly closed by bending the flaps 16 over the rest of the folded flaps and the tongue 17 inserted between the lining and wall. See Figure 4:.
The fastening devices are so arranged so as not to contact with the product in the carton, as I may use staples, rivets or other means. of securing the lining in position on the carton blank.
The essential feature of my invention however, is to form a lining on the carton blank and by one operation wrap the product by covering it with a lining as well as an formed on the opposite edge, a long flap formed on said edge adjacent to one of the short flaps, said flap provided with a scored line for bending a portion of said flap in combination with a lining of oil substance placed over the blank, and V-shaped prongs formed at intervals in the body for holding the lining in position, substantially as specified.
2. A carton of the character described comprising a blank provided with two par allel scores running the entire length of the blank forming a body member, a plurality of scores arranged cross-wise with the blank on which lines the blank may be folded to encase the goods to be wrapped, one edge of the blank formed with three short flaps and one long flap, and a lining of oil substance placed over the body and flaps and prongs for holding the same together, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
