lt will be apparent that when duid pressure is admitted to the lower-end of the cylinder 8l the piston rod 8O will move upwardly and cause the several levers to pull on and move the stops or lingers 42 and i3 toward and against the side edges of the plates to be matched.
The fingers 42 and el?) are arranged to be retracted or moved away from the edges of the matched plates by the' springs 88 and 89. these springs having one end an chored to the shaft `77 and the other end thereof secured to the lower ends of the rocking levers 73 and 83 (see Figure l).
Ilhe general operation of this doubling mechanism will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
Attention is directed however, to the fact that. the sheets are doubled by a downward movement thereof, between the rolls 7 and 7a instead of moving upwardly. By doubling the sheets downwardly the opera tion is facilitated and the sheets are more closely doubled. since the packs of sheets have a curved formation as they come from the rolls. and when doubled upwardly this curve in the plates acts as a spring and prevents the plates being doubled closely together. lt will also be noted that by doubling the sheets downwardly the major portion of the mechanism may be mounted in a pit below the floor level, thus saving valuable door space in the mill.

A plate doubling mechanism comprising` a pair of rolls, means for rotating said rolls` means for matching a plurality of plates above said rolls, a doubling knife mounted for vert-ical movement above said rolls, means for moving said knife downwardly into position to force'said plates into the bite of said rolls, and means operated by engagement by the plates in the passage thereof between said rolls for reversing the direction of rotation of said rolls, so as to feed said plates backwardly from between said rolls to the level at which the plates enter said rolls.
4. A plate doubling mechanism comprising a pair of rolls, means for positively rotating said rolls. a doubling knife above said rolls. said knife being adapted to force plates into the bite of said rolls. means for operating said knife, a tripping lever operated by engagement therewith of the plates in the passage thereof between said rolls, and means actuated by said lever for ren versing the direction of rotation of said rolls, to thereby feed saidv plates backwardly from between said rolls to the entrance side thereof.
5. A plate doubling mechanism comprising a pair of spring pressed rolls, a motor and roll driving motor gearing operatively connecting said motor and rolls, a doubling knife mounted for vertical reciproeatory movement above said rolls, fluid pressure cylinders and levers connecting said ey1inders with said knife for actuatingr said knife. said knife being adapted to move downwardly against said plates and thereby force said plates into the bite of said rolls, stops adapted to engage with the'side and end.
